Hysterical (1983) - Hudson Brothers

Description
Hysterical (1983) - Hudson Brothers

A burned out writer retreats to a northwest town called Hellview to write the great American novel. Unfortunately for him, the lighthouse he is renting is inhabited by the spirit of a woman who killed herself there one hundred years before and now wants him to replace her lost love, Captain Howdy. When Captain Howdy is resurrected, two daring adventure seekers are brought in to solve the case and find out the secret of the lighthouse.

The Hudson Brothers and a variety of familiar faces star in this hilarious murder mystery spoof. In the tradition of Scary Movie, HYSTERICAL parodies horror films such as Dracula, Amityville Horror and the The Exorcist, as well as classics like Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the spirit of Airplane!, this fast-moving laugh fest also boasts plenty of physical comedy, farce, satire, Marx Brothers style-wordplay and outrageous musical numbers.

Particularly fun is seeing well-known starts pop up in roles that parody their own media images like femme fatale Julie Newman as Venetia, a sexually frustrated ghost who seeks revenge on an entire resort town, and Richard Kiel, the gigantic, metal-mouthed 'Jaws' in the The Spy Who Loved Me, as Captain Howdy, her love slave. Other celebrities in off the wall supporting roles include Bud Cort (Harold and Maude) as a musician, Murray Hamilton (Jaws) as the shark phobic mayor, comedian Charlie Callas as Count Dracula and sophisticated sex symbol Cindy Pickett as the sheriff's innocent daughter.

With a genre as ripe for parody as horror, can this entertaining film- filled with zombies, an ominous lighthouse, a curse, a possession, human sacrifice, and a brain-twisting mystery-be anything but HYSTERICAL.
