Naruto is a story of a teen-aged ninja boy whose dream is to become a great Hokage, the head of his village. He's an orphan who doesn't know who his parents are and why he was hated by the old folk villagers. It was only when he became genin, a low-ranking ninja, that he learned about his past through Mizuki, one of his senseis who tricked him into stealing one of the village's sacred scroll. He learned that a demon fox who attacked his village 15 years ago was sealed within him right after he was born, by the 4th Hokage.

Desperate to be recognized by the whole village, he strives to become a fine ninja. After graduating the ninja academy when he was twelve, he was assigned in a 4-man cell composed of 3 genins and one jounin (upper ninja class). In his group, he became close friends with Uchiha Sasuke, a ninja who came from an elite clan and whose family was mass murdered by his older brother, Uchiha Itachi. The younger Uchiha swore to avenge his clan's death by killing his older brother. Naruto was devastated when Sasuke joined Orochimaru, the village's notorious ninja who went missing and one day came back to his village, Konoha, in order to destroy it and to take Sasuke with him as his next transfer body. He failed in destroying the village completely but succeeded in taking Sasuke with him. Naruto tried to convince Sasuke not to go to Orochimaru but Sasuke went anyway. Because of this, Naruto swore to take Sasuke back to the village and restore their friendship. Naruto went into rigorous training with Jiraiya for two and a half years in order to prepare his next meeting with Sasuke.
