Synopsis:
I see now, having Wnished this book, that, by at least one count, I have
failed again––failed, that is, to produce a systematic or even integrated
work. What I have written continually stops and starts again, moving off
at a series of tangents on paths that might well have been pursued on
their own and now might well be followed independently or out of order.
Yet each of these tangents touches the space of the photographic at a
glance, at a particular point, and it is at these particular points that we
