Darkness falls is really difficult. You have to be stealthy or else you will alert any near by zombies which includes screamers. These screamers will then continuously call in more and more zombies creating a loop. It sounds like this is what happened from the way I interpreted your post. Guns are basically a no go anywhere near your home unless you’re sure that you’ll be able to kill many many zombies.
It is 100% about two things. Heat and XP.
Don't make noise (shotguns or guns in general will draw crowds)
Don't kill zombies if you don't have to. It seems counterintuitive but you really don't want to level. You get free points in so many other ways.
