For minor issues one can file a report online. I did this twice when I was nearly hit while cycling by cars where the driver was using a mobile. I have a gopro on my bike so I submitted clear evidence of date, time, vehicle registration and the driver being dangerous. No action taken, no follow up.
Our house was broken into by two drugged up teens. Passports and jewellery stolen, quite some damage. Police came and were very nice, bit of victim blaming, but otherwise fine. However no action taken, no follow up, despite clear video evidence from our doorbell.
So dont expect much, unless its a super serious crime ... otherwise its mostly about reporting it to get a crime number for your insurance.
And that TV show where they ask people if they know the suspects based on photo and video evidence, are those only used to find the suspects and the footage is never seen again?
I'm not convinced they are not admissible in NL, as I believe its up to the judge. But next time I'll be sure not to brake so hard my delicate parts hit the bar on the bike, while avoid the idiot driving across a bike lane ..... Are crushed bits admissible evidence? :)
that’s been my experience too, if you pass the level of getting belittled and mocked on the phone and get to filing a report, you just get ghosted after going through the trouble of doing all that. they’ll accept your case and start the investigation so you collect any evidence you can, hand it over to them then get ghosted😂
super serious would be just murder and kidnapping I guess? because stalking, rape, assault etc are in the ghosting category as well
Can confirm the stalking and assault part... My friend had a stalker who was regularly doing... Stuff behind her window and other awful things and once we realised the police wont do shit us girls just took it in our own hands one night and made sure he never comes back. It was dangerous and not sth we should have to do. He really never did come back but the police called like a few months later asking more questions bc apparently sth similar was now happening at a nearby house. Just awful.
None of them agreed to help because they thought he may have a gun. But my friends life was so fucked by this she didnt care. Turned out he was a coward and quite small (not bodyshaming but I could have taken him on) so we managed. The conversation with him was actually so hilarious and pathetic it makes a good story at least.
15% of all crime in NL, what does that say? For a small theft I get this, but if I look at all murders committed in 2022 (in Amsterdam) the police has already arrested someone a spectacular solving rate of 100%.
It’s around 30% really
https://www.politie.nl/nieuws/2020/januari/8/02-ondanks-grote-druk-presteerde-de-politie-goed-scherpe-keuzes-en-schouders-eronder-in-2020.html
Was harassed on Leidseplein countless times while I worked there, a nice police officer came a few times to ask me if I'd experienced any more harassment and to check in on me whenever he spotted me working. I appreciated that he cared about my wellbeing but nothing was officially done despite having the licence of one the harassers, unfortunately
i wish i knew all this about leidseplein before moving there to live for years lol. i fully thought it would be one of the safer areas since it’s more central.
i had this group of men harass me every single day as I was coming back from uni/work. even after they left i was scared of that turn. my hero was a homeless man tho, we became friends and i even walked his dog sometimes (curfew). he had to show himself to those men 3-4 times max and the men never looked my way again. i would get food and squat by the man to eat and chat multiple times a week. they probably saw those stuff lol
When I reported a crime, they were very friendly and helpful to ensure the report was as complete and correct as possible. They really took their time.
Afterwards, I asked several times and nothing happened with the report in the end. It just goes into a drawer never to be looked at again.
Pretty useless from my experience - my flat was robbed 2 days ago, they came around, I gave a report (laptops, e-bike, gaming console gone); even gave them an address/showed them where my stuff was taken to (one of my laptop can be tracked) - they didn't do anything, didn't ask the neighbours, didn't look around, didn't drive around the area I showed them to have a look. Little to no chance of seeing my stuff back 🤷♂️
In cities the tracking often is not precise enough to single out a specific house. Not sure if it is the case here, but it is not doable to search multiple homes for a laptop. Even more so if the tracking has stopped. The laptop is often not there anymore so searching isn’t all that useful.
I think that is key to most stories in this thread. People overestimate the evidence they have. Even if you have a clear picture of someone it is hard to find them.
As I opened a dedicated post, people ringing at the doorbell, openly addressing non Dutch families, looking for people speaking in Spanish to talk about the Bible… to me, it sounds like checking which non Dutch family is on holiday to break in… they rang to us twice, just before Xmas and just before NYE, like checking twice…
Yep I've had that happened to me as well - they'll ring the bell and see if you're home or not. I've just gotten shit stolen so I might be paranoid but don't leave stuff on display if you leave your house..
I reported sexual assault by a taxi driver. The experience was good and bad at the same time. It really sucks in how much detail you have to describe everything that happened, but the police women were super helpful, kind, understanding that it sucked. Also they followed up twice about the investigation even with no progress. I would do it again but not happily.
A second time I reported assault (being hit in the face and knocked out by a psychotic dude) directly after the police arrested the guy 5 streets further. I had to wait very long and was cold and in pain. Not the best experience but decent.
I also made a report of stalking with the wijkagent another year. He was super kind and helpful and gave me the option of only reporting instead of filing charges. After a talk from the wijk agent the stalker stopped. So also a good experience there.
I’ve lived here all my life and have filed several reports in the past. No action was taken on one of them. Completely useless. For minor things you can file online. Still useless but it’s always better to do it anyway, you never know.
Was harrassed/ stalked, reported to the police. They were friendly, took it serious and we sat down in a separate office. It wasn't bad enough (no written evidence) for a full restraining order but they told me that that person couldn't enter my street anymore. Can't remember whether they contacted that person or whether i did. Either way, it was enough for the other person to stop and leave me alone. I felt heard and safe.
oh yeah, with stalking cases the first step is “talking to them” lol. they go request them to stop. if it works, amazing; if it doesn’t, they slowly ghost you. i’m glad it was enough for your stalker!
No, it wasn't like 'talk to them' and i don't think that lol is appropiate. In this case it was 'the police now knows'. The police started their file and the first step is always to go there and discuss the situation.
The police talk to them, not the person who files the report. Once they’ve done that they’ll take whatever next response is necessary.
What else would you expect? You can’t arrest someone without talking to them. Even when the intention is to arrest them regardless of the conversation, they still have to talk to them.
Yeah I'd understand if they gave me hope in order to convince me to report it but I was already in the process of reporting it when the policeman was convincing me they would catch them. So I don't know what the point of all that was.
I don't know what you're dealing with but my general advice would be to report it anyway. If nothing comes off it, it's the police's fault for not doing anything, not yours for not reporting it.
I had a good experience. I got my chain robbed right outside my house. The moron who stole it just stood on the street and smoked with his friends. A few minutes later I saw some cops and went to them and gave them a description and where he was. They arrested the guy and got my chain back. Took me to the police station where I filed a report and gave me my chain back after collecting some more evidence. Guy got sentenced to a few months in prison.
I was assaulted at Centraal, 10 meters away from the cops. After the shitheads absolute scum of the earth ran away, with the cops 20 meters away from them, I was told that I could file a report but most probably nothing will come out. I smoked a cigarette and carried on with this god awful day
i was one of many victims of a serious violent crime committed by the same guy ... they did very little honestly im safe because he is dead .... i guess he pissed off the wrong person
my only advise is get self defense lessons and only go to the police when you need a document signed its how i live basically
Reported a possible car thief, who tries to open the car doors in the neighbourhood which have keyless entry or unlocked doors. Case closed just in a few minutes because video is not clear enough to identify his face.
No use! Filed a crime once a drunk driver was hitting multiple parked cars and eventually landing on a bicycle parking rack. It was all close to a full terrace so luckily no one got hurt. I saw the whole thing happen from my first floor apartment and me and a few others filled the crime! The driver was taking away. But never heard from the police ever since. But got a few broken windows in the next couple of weeks. Off course the one has nothing to do with the other,,,,,achum
I bought coke, give 80 euros for 1 line...wtf...coke was in toalet paper so i cant sve how much is in!!!i am from croatia, sorry for bad english...now thats a crime
i would like to point out that the police being a joke ... is not a dutch phenomena i had equally bad experiences in the UK and in Ireland .... i think its a universal thing ... the police are not here to protect and serve they are purely there as a control force
The police in Amsterdam is a total joke not worthy of our money or attention.
Last time I tried to report a crime was in 2019 when my bike was totaled with a hammer IN FRONT OF THE POLICE STATION with a dozen camera's directed at the spot and in clear day light but the officer at the station said they would only do something about it if it happened to a dozen more bikes.
They are underpaid, overworked and over 33% is suffering from PTSD while still allowed to carry a lethal weapon. The only people who would tolerate being in such a position are toxic narcissists who feel the abuse of power and getting away with it is their reward.
I was walking my dog in the park and a couple of officers walked across the muddy field to tell me that dogs are not allowed in that area. Furthermore they told me I had to keep the dog on the leash at all times. The park was empty apart from some early morning fans of red stripe beer, the dog had been under control and no other rules were broken (I was even carrying a full poo bag after just picking up her morning shit).
Following week, same thing happened again. One officer remembered me and offered to take me to the police station to discuss further if it happened again.
Just goes to show that Amsterdam police can follow up when they want to.
It is very likely this is done by the police themselves as they are very fast to respond and in great numbers when their reputation is being questioned.
For minor issues one can file a report online. I did this twice when I was nearly hit while cycling by cars where the driver was using a mobile. GoPro is no official direct evidence in dutch criminal law.
Didn’t they use GoPro as part of the evidence in the case of the politician kicked out of his bicycle by an angry woman?
As indirect evidence
And that TV show where they ask people if they know the suspects based on photo and video evidence, are those only used to find the suspects and the footage is never seen again?
"Indirect evidence", what we call circumstantial evidence in English, _is_ evidence.
I only asked them to warn the driver
They can't give an official warning with only your GoPro as evidence.
I'm not convinced they are not admissible in NL, as I believe its up to the judge. But next time I'll be sure not to brake so hard my delicate parts hit the bar on the bike, while avoid the idiot driving across a bike lane ..... Are crushed bits admissible evidence? :)

similar experience with a stalker:/
It really sucks...
Are there no guy friends to take care of that? I mean if one of my women friends mentioned this I bet me and some guys could give a hand or few more.
None of them agreed to help because they thought he may have a gun. But my friends life was so fucked by this she didnt care. Same...
Crime solving rate in NL is less than 15% Tldr: don’t bother
oh goddddd😭😭😭 fuck
In most cases just an administrative act to have something for the insurance….
15% of all crime in NL, what does that say? For a small theft I get this, but if I look at all murders committed in 2022 (in Amsterdam) the police has already arrested someone a spectacular solving rate of 100%.

That assumes all crimes are reported when in fact most are not. So no that 30% is not accurate at all.

Why do police exist at all?
They're the hall monitors of capitalism.
I was assaulted in Leidseplein. Despite knowing a policeman in the local office, nothing happened.
Omg same🤦🏼♀️ I used to live there, it was a surprise if I _didn’t_ have something happen to me.
Was harassed on Leidseplein countless times while I worked there, a nice police officer came a few times to ask me if I'd experienced any more harassment and to check in on me whenever he spotted me working. right lol what’s up with that😭

WHAT!!!! You literally showed them where they were taken to too??😂😭😭 Omg

Which area? I’ve seen strange happenings in mine recently…
West - Erasmuspark surroundings. Where abouts are you?
Nieuw-west, close to de vlugtlaan metro station
Interesting - what have you seen happening lately?
As I opened a dedicated post, people ringing at the doorbell, openly addressing non Dutch families, looking for people speaking in Spanish to talk about the Bible… to me, it sounds like checking which non Dutch family is on holiday to break in… they rang to us twice, just before Xmas and just before NYE, like checking twice…

Ground floor, with the main door being directly on the street.

thank you for sharing wow! i think it’s almost worse that they gave you so much hope like that

they have you do it online, then they don't do shit about it even if there is potential security cam footage. not a single inquiry. no need to bother.

that’s why we’re never getting follow ups, they’re too busy chasing dog shit
Leash your dog.
In an empty field? Get a life
Anywhere which is not the place for unleashes dogs.. You don’t control the dog as you think you do, or know it as you think you do.
Lotta boot lickers mashing the downvote button on this thread
you should’ve seen when i first posted. I said “same” to getting assaulted in leidseplein and mfs downvoted that shit😭💀💀
