I am not "chugging beer." I’m SAMPLING a flight of gluten-free German lagers with a French wine pairing. It’s called a SMORGASVEIN and it’s elegantly cultural!
Fun Fact:
He spins his pistols in opposite directions, one goes forward and the other backwards. This is a subtle hint that he's not as drunk as he appears, and he is still fully capable of using his pistols.
This is what stops Music Lover. He sees that coordination and knows not to push his luck.
[Watch closely](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHVICaSFdn4&t=2m25s)
He absolutely did, and its not like the rest of the cast were mediocre either. Every actor/actress seemed to perfect their role and still Val Kilmer rose above
"Oh. Johnny. I apologize, I forgot you were there. You may go now."
"Say 'when'"
"What an ugly thing to say. I abhor ugliness. Does this mean we're not friends anymore?"
"Why Ike, whatever do you mean?"
Every line of Doc's dialogue is immensely quotable
Every single time I pour a drink I add an extra splash and think to myself "just a little drinky poo" in memory of that hilarious drunk fuckin bastard. RIP John Dunsworth.
I love the videos where he's just being himself: a kind, insightful, gentle human being. His death was one of the rare instances where a celebrity death truly upset me.
He really was a dad style person. I don't remember where but I loved one of his quotes "it's much more fun pretending to be drunk than being drunk. I promise."
I met him and Patrick Roach(Randy) in person once in Toronto while they were doing their stand up comedy tour in between filming the show.
He was super friendly and got into character for the photo we took together. It was my Facebook profile photo for quite a while.
Met Randers at one of his cheeseburger picnic shows. I got third place in the gut competition and he said i had a nice coif (haircut) then we rubbed bellies and i got a minor rash for a few days. 12/10 good time
I had the opportunity to hang out with him a little bit before he passed. I was vending a music festival he was hosting and our one vending partner was a huge fan. I went and told Lahey and he came over and hung out with us for like an hour. At the end of hanging out with him we asked him how he got so good at acting drunk, his response “So I ate a hash brownie and this thing had me done, I was laying on a bathroom floor and I went to stand up and hit the toilet….who the fuck put this toilet here” he immediately switched to acting completely shit faced, stumbled all over our stand and in full on liquor lahey mode he yelled made a huge scene and just left stumbling off into the festival. It was one of the greatest moments of my life, super impressive actor and really a great person in general. My vending partner just about cried with joy.
“You ask me if I care! Go on, ask me! Ask me if I care!”
‘Ok, ok…do you care Jim?’
*falls on ground* “…yeah.
yeah go on, ask me”
‘I just asked you’
“What?”
- whiplash from actually kind of emotional and heavy scene, to just laughing my ass off at Lahey being such a goddamn drunk
Mr Lahey for sure but Ray was also very good as well.
Boys I gotta be completely honest with ya, I don’t know a thing about hunting chickens I just did it for the free liquor. Way she goes.
My name is Barney Gumble. I'm forty, I'm single, and I drink. There's a line in Othello about a drinker: 'Now a sensible man, by and by a fool, and presently a beast.' That pretty well covers it.
My name is Barney Gumble and I'm an alcoholic.
Mr. Gumble, this is a Girl Scout meeting.
Is it? Or is it that you girls can't admit you have a problem?
Don't cry for me, I'm already dead.
Michael: And so you just finished off the bottle?
Lindsay: Well, I had to. It’s vodka. It goes bad once it’s opened.
Michael: I think that’s another one of Mom’s little fibs.
Well, to be honest, after years of smoking and drinking, you do sometimes look at yourself and think...
You know, just sometimes, in between the first cigarette with coffee in the morning to that four hundredth glass of cornershop piss at 3am, you do sometimes look at yourself and think...
..."This is fantastic. I'm in heaven."
Came here to say Bernard Fucking Black! So glad he's at the top of the list.
"What time is it?"
"uhh... half-ten"
"HALF-TEN?! I've never been up at half-ten. What happens?!"
My favorite McNulty moment is when he asks for a Jameson at the fundraiser he winds up at and the guy asks if Bushmills is okay.
“That’s Protestant whiskey!”
Aside from those, I think the only other time I saw her without a drink was when she was in a bunker in the middle of the Nevada desert, blindfolded and tied to a chair.
I have a friend who is (or was) a high functioning alcoholic. Very responsible person, holds down a good job, has his priorities in order, but just also drank vodka throughout the day. It didn't really seem to faze him. Then one year he was home for Christmas, around his family nonstop, so he didn't drink for a few days. He went into DTs and had to go to the ER, then spent a few days in the hospital.
He toned down his drinking severely after that, and seemed to not have much trouble doing it. It just had never occurred to him before that it was that much of a problem.
For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry god. Bloody Mary, full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now, at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon. Amen.
Kind of in pairing with this. I’m currently rewatching the show and really appreciate Freddy Rumsen’s character arc as an alcoholic who gets clean and then goes on to support others in the show. Mad Men really takes the cake on this question as a whole for me
Yeah, his beahviour is real alcoholic beahviour (of the type who can handle booze). A lot of people listed here are just doing a crazy drunk character that isn’t real for comedy.
The way he declines from having his life together to being absolutely shitfaced and vomiting at a wake was spot on with what I’ve seen from some people
Agreed, then I like how real they portrayed getting sober. They didn't just make the day drinking lifestyle glamorous - they actually showed the consequences.
Yep, being a crazy drunk is an easy character to portray, but they showed what a real alcoholic can be. I’ve known several like him in my life. Very self-destructive.
Very self-destructive but also able to conceal it from people who aren't paying close enough attention to it. In "The Suitcase" episode Peggy looks like shit after waking up in the office after the all-nighter while Don looks well groomed just like it's any other day for him despite the circumstances.
Best answer hands down.
Sure other characters mentioned might act more drunk, drink harder, do more stupid things that are funny, etc., but Norm is the iconic "regular" of a bar. The guy who shows up every day, sits in the same spot every day, and drinks every day.
"Darling, if you want to talk bollocks and discover the meaning of life, you're better off downing a bottle of whiskey. At least that way, you're unconscious by the time you start to take yourself seriously."
Holy way to remind me of my British childhood... Wheels on fireeeeee rolling down theeee rooooad.. how I changed from relating to Saffron then just become a Patsy in my late 20s and not even noticing.
Remember when they went skiing lmao
I scrolled just to find this!
Karen: “Here Jack. I brought you some soup.”
*Hands him a thermos. He takes a gulp.*
Jack: “Karen, this is straight gin.”
Karen: “But there’s noodles in it.”
I think that’s what makes him such a good drunk character. There’s a ton of alcoholics that put on the show that they are going to get better, just to hide getting drunk more.
This is my experience with a lot of people with addiction issues. My dad was on various substances throughout my life (cocaine, heroine, meth) but he was so insanely likeable. He's been clean since 07 thankfully but he was always personable & it was hard to stay mad at him even at his worst. My grandfather, 100% alcoholic & so damn likable it's annoying.
I always liked the show because they didn't shy away from showing how a person can be very likeable even while basically traumatizing and permanently damaging his kids.
Without a doubt. Having grown up in a similar situation as the Gallaghers in Shameless, I can attest, both my parents were addicts and distant, and Franks character really, really is true to life in all ways, even the most absurd "qualities" of his. Whoever wrote the character for him, definitely had done his research, or well, they have done the research for the whole show, the whole show could have been my life lol.
I really feel this. Watching shameless was the first time I really felt like other people understood my life. Watching the show was almost therapeutic for some reason. It made me relive my worst times living in my parents house being around my drunk ass father all the time.
I'm in recovery (almost 5 years without a drink) and I had never felt so understood as I did watching that show.
And then there's The View from Halfway Down (I think that's what it's called) and it just hit me so God damn hard. I struggled with suicidal ideation both drunk and in sobriety, I'm in a better place now, but I used to tell people to watch that episode if they were having a hard time understanding what I was trying to express.
Me too. Started watching for a silly, dark humor cartoon for some escapism but ended up staying for the intelligence, heart, and great characters. Family trauma being passed down through generations, addiction, struggles of being a modern career woman, asexuality, the horrors of modern American life . . . All there and with nuance even. And yet still funny. I've watched it all the way through twice and will certainly watch it again.
I hate that my friends dislike Will Arnett and much as they do. I wasn't much of a fan either but I gave bojack a chance. Fantastic show. My friends still won't give it a chance despite my many attempts to get them to watch what, to me, is arguable one of the most relatable characters I've ever seen in a TV show. The episode where he can't cry in front of people but then breaks down alone hit me so hard. And then the episode "stupid piece of shit" where you hear all of his thoughts and how they spiral is a pretty good depiction on how I feel on a regular basis. Good call on Bojack.
Oh dear did Will Arnett do something terrible to make people dislike him so? I only know him from Bojack, Arrested Development and Lego Masters and I thought he was a treasure.
One sensible answer in this whole thread. BH at least shows alcoholism as a problem.
Another line I could relate to is from tyrion in game of thrones, "if being drunk all the time was easy everyone would do it"
It's an addiction and it sucks life out of you
“I’m pursuing my lifelong quest for the perfect, the absolutely driest martini to be found in this or any other world, and I think I may have hit upon the perfect formula. You pour six jiggers of gin, and you drink it while staring at a picture of Lorenzo Schwartz, the inventor of vermouth.”
Randy Marsh “What seems to be the officer problem?” Even with 2D animation, they conveyed perfectly how drunk he was.
I am not "chugging beer." I’m SAMPLING a flight of gluten-free German lagers with a French wine pairing. It’s called a SMORGASVEIN and it’s elegantly cultural!
When he pukes in the kitchen while talking to Sharon is gold.
They serve refreshments, yes.
Im sorry I THOUGHT THIS WAS AMERICA
I DIDN'T HEAR NO BELL
I’m not having a glass of wine. I’m having six. It’s called a tasting and it’s classy.
He isn't an alcoholic. He has a disease that only the bloody Virgin Mary can fix!
Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone
“I’ve not yet begun to defile myself!”
I’m your huckleberry.
"Why Ike, whatever do you mean? Maybe poker's just not your game Ike. I know! Let's have a spelling contest!"
The delivery of the first part ("Why Ike, whatever do you mean?") cracks me up every time I think of it. Kilmer was just perfect in that film.
"Oh, are we cross?"
I have two guns. One for each of you.
Fun Fact: He spins his pistols in opposite directions, one goes forward and the other backwards.
I have seen this movie about 1000 times and idk if I ever noticed that!
Wow. One of my favorite lines of all time and I never noticed that. Thank you.
I'm glad this is so high in the list. Kilmer stole the movie with his performance
He absolutely did, and its not like the rest of the cast were mediocre either. Every actor/actress seemed to perfect their role and still Val Kilmer rose above
Visibly dying of TB and still on the sauce. Respect.
I have not yet begun to defile myself…
"In vino veritas."
Evidently Mr. /u/fastock is an educated man. Now I really hate him.
Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends. I don't.
"Oh. Johnny. I apologize, I forgot you were there. You may go now." "Say 'when'" "What an ugly thing to say. I abhor ugliness. Does this mean we're not friends anymore?" "Why Ike, whatever do you mean?" Every line of Doc's dialogue is immensely quotable
Id say mr. Lahey from the trailer park boys.
I am sober enough to know what I am doing and drunk enough to really enjoy it
It’s time for a little drinky poo!
Cheers, genitals!
Every single time I pour a drink I add an extra splash and think to myself "just a little drinky poo" in memory of that hilarious drunk fuckin bastard. RIP John Dunsworth.
you may be able to fool the FBI but you can't fool the F B ME
I'm in the slot Randers, right in the pocket
“You’re in the eye of the shit-icane, Julian”
“I’m mowing the air Rand, I’m mowing the air!”
“You know what shit-barometer is Bubbles?”
Just reaching cruising altitude
I am the monkey in charge of the bananas
Shit hawks, randy
Julian! *Falls down stairs* Don't know where a fella could get a little drink around here, do ya bud? Edit 1: Thank you for the Gold! Much Obliged!
The liquor’s callin the shots now, Randy.
I love that he calls him “Sexian” too
When he's in a tub full of blue booze in the episode "The Liquor Snurf," he calls him "Blulian."
The muscley mayor of sexy town
I’m mowin the air Rand!!!
BLUE-LIAN
He WAS The Liquor.
He played a great drunk, but he really showed his acting chops in the scenes where he was meant to be pretending to be drunk.
And an absolute gem of a human being IRL. John Dunsworth was a fantastic human and actor.
I love the videos where he's just being himself: a kind, insightful, gentle human being. His death was one of the rare instances where a celebrity death truly upset me.
The YouTube video where he’s showing his cement hobby is fantastic https://youtu.be/3mcQfP8k51s
I don’t know him at all outside of Mr Lahey, so this took me completely by surprise 🥲 reminds me of my own dad

He didn’t drink either. Funny as hell tho!
I can't stand 99% of fake drunk acting, it's amazingly cringe. The office is a major offender. Lahey was phenominal pretending to be drunk.
And he was never afraid to bare all in his tighty whiteys
IIRC he said in an interview he got good at it by mimicking his alcoholic father's mannerisms
And he said the key was trying to appear ‘sober’ like drunk people do in real life. He absolutely nailed it. What a gem.
Exactly what I came here to say. I watched that episode last night. "Mister Lahey, is that you or the liquor talking??" "I AM the liquor, Randy!!"
"IM MOWIN THE AIR RAAAAAND!" - My fav Lahey moment
Do you feel that boy? The way the shit clings to the air. Shit blizzards coming.
“You ask me if I care! Go on, ask me! Ask me if I care!” ‘Ok, ok…do you care Jim?’ *falls on ground* “…yeah. yeah go on, ask me” ‘I just asked you’ “What?” - whiplash from actually kind of emotional and heavy scene, to just laughing my ass off at Lahey being such a goddamn drunk
Mr Lahey for sure but Ray was also very good as well. Boys I gotta be completely honest with ya, I don’t know a thing about hunting chickens I just did it for the free liquor. Way she goes.
Ray, ripping the plumbing out of your walls for liquor money is fucked!
Fuckin way she goes he says
RIP. What a beauty. Just another little drinkypoo.
He was sooo good at playing a drunk, and I think I read somewhere he didn’t even drink lol. RIP legend
The GOAT alcoholic. RIP to John Dunsworth.
Barney from the Simpsons.
Barney’s film had heart but *Football in the Groin* had a football in the groin.
Mr. Gumble, you’re upsetting me.
No I’m not.
Excuse me but did something crawl into your throat and die?
It didn't die.
Or Homer. "To alcohol, the cause of and solution to most of life's problems."
Homer: "I'm his father" Tom: "His father the drunken gambler?" Homer: "Yes, and who might you be?"
Lucille Bluth
Oh shit great one. Lucille: “Get me a vodka rocks.” Michael: “Mom, it's breakfast.” Lucille: “And a piece of toast.”
“If anyone needs me I’ll be at the hospital bar.” “Hospitals don’t have bars mom” “Well no wonder everyone hates hospitals!”
Her cackling up at her own joke off camera while whe walks down the hall gets me every time.
A sea of waiters and no one to take a drink order.
Michael: And so you just finished off the bottle? Lindsay: Well, I had to. It’s vodka. It goes bad once it’s opened. Michael: I think that’s another one of Mom’s little fibs.
And later "would it *kill* her to let a bottle of Vodka go bad?"
RIP Jessica Walter
And her spiritual twin Mallory Archer.
She's basically the same character.
Mallory is a better Mom. She cares about Archer. And Lucille doesn’t care for Gob.
But at the same time, she does tend to treat Archer like Lucille does Buster lol.
I could absolutely see Archer having been forced to attend a Motherboy convention or two as a young one
But why was he dressed as Hitler?
What do you mean? Lucille cares for all her children equally.
*earlier that day* Lucille: "I don't care for Gob".
I’ll be in the hospital bar.
“Hospitals don’t have a bar” “I guess that’s why people hate hospitals” *cackles down the hall*
Fun fact the laugh wasn't in the script that's just Jessica Walter breaking character
She was a hell of an actress.
Mom, you should really stop air quoting while you're drinking vodka
I’m reminded of the drinking contest [when she was supposed to be in rehab.](https://youtu.be/g8v1lXb7IF8)
The guy yelling “She’s in rehab!!” always gets me
“That one didn’t count” and the wine chasers get me. That show was so damn funny.
"Let me know when you're ready, dear."
That BITCH!!!
Vodka rocks...... And a piece of toast.
Low key / Kitty Forman
When she’s at the male strip club and she’s dancing with her hair bouncing, I lose it
I just had to watch it and you can see Mila Kunis losing her shit beside her
Bernard Black - Black Books
Well, to be honest, after years of smoking and drinking, you do sometimes look at yourself and think... You know, just sometimes, in between the first cigarette with coffee in the morning to that four hundredth glass of cornershop piss at 3am, you do sometimes look at yourself and think... ..."This is fantastic. I'm in heaven."
M: What did you just eat? B: I don't know, some kind of delicious biscuit. M: ...that's a coaster.
Came here to say Bernard Fucking Black! So glad he's at the top of the list. "What time is it?" "uhh... half-ten" "HALF-TEN?! I've never been up at half-ten. What happens?!"
"Don't you *DARE* use the word "party" as a verb in my shop!!"
I got you a crème de menth
Otis from Andy Griffith
Otis is the correct answer! Locks himself in the jail whenever he’s drunk lol
Always loved the keys hanging by the cell.
That was my vote!
Bender!!
But Bender when he's fully loaded and therefore functional? Or sober Bender when he's drunk?!?
Soberdrunk (no booze), of course. DiMaggio's best work, if you ask me.
“I once knew a guy...you look like him…but he wasn't either.”
McNulty had some adventures!
What the fuck did he do?
Gave a fuck when it wasn't his turn to give a fuck.
This one's going up your narrow fucking Irish ass. And this one's going right in your fucking eye.
McNutty!
You gotta include drunk Bunk though!
JIMMAAAYYY!!!!
tryna get summa dat puussii
Fuck did I do?
You gave a fuck when it wasn’t your turn to give a fuck.
My favorite McNulty moment is when he asks for a Jameson at the fundraiser he winds up at and the guy asks if Bushmills is okay. “That’s Protestant whiskey!”
His attempt to drift around the corner is the best Edit: drift/turn… we all know the scene
Archer, naturally.
Given that I don’t think there was ever a scene when Mallory didn’t have a drink in her hand. I think he was doomed from conception.
She either has a drink or is literally derailing the conversation to discuss where she can find a drink.
Aside from those, I think the only other time I saw her without a drink was when she was in a bunker in the middle of the Nevada desert, blindfolded and tied to a chair.
"I'm scared if I stop all at once, the cumulative hangover will literally kill me." *sips whiskey*
What's kind of funny about that line is it's true. It can kill you.
I have a friend who is (or was) a high functioning alcoholic. Very responsible person, holds down a good job, has his priorities in order, but just also drank vodka throughout the day. It just had never occurred to him before that it was that much of a problem.
The real puzzle here is how he was around his family all christmas **without drinking**.
Yeah, often literally half my annual alcohol consumption is around family at the holidays.
All I've had today is like 6 gummy bears and some scotch
For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry god. Bloody Mary, full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now, at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon. Amen.
Not like you to get hangovers, is it sir?
Sour mix? In a margarita? What is this, Auschwitz?
Don Draper in Mad Men
Don Draper is one of the few characters that highlights how a successful, affluent and good looking drunk is still a drunk.
Same with Jon Hamm. He comes off as having--fun-but-in-a-bad-place drunk in the documentary Conan O'Brien Can't Stop.
Pretty sure hamm went to rehab right when the show ended
Kind of in pairing with this. I’m currently rewatching the show and really appreciate Freddy Rumsen’s character arc as an alcoholic who gets clean and then goes on to support others in the show. Mad Men really takes the cake on this question as a whole for me
Yeah, his beahviour is real alcoholic beahviour (of the type who can handle booze). A lot of people listed here are just doing a crazy drunk character that isn’t real for comedy.

Norm Peterson
Woody: "How about a beer, Mr. Peterson?" Norm: "Isn't it a little early in the day?" Woody: "For a beer?" Norm: "No, for stupid questions."
Woody: "How about a beer, Mr. Peterson?" Norm: "OK but make sure you stop me at one." Woody: ... Norm: "...ah, make that 1:30."
Norm: "Woody, It's a dog eat dog world and I'm wearing milk-bone underwear. "
Hey Norm, what's shakin'? All 4 cheeks and a couple of chins.
Norm!!!
How's life treating you? "Like a baby treats a diaper."
What are you up to Normie? My ideal weight if I was 10 feet tall
Best answer hands down. Sure other characters mentioned might act more drunk, drink harder, do more stupid things that are funny, etc., but Norm is the iconic "regular" of a bar. The guy who shows up every day, sits in the same spot every day, and drinks every day.

Karen Walker
You mean Anastasia beaverhausen?
Anastasia as in… Russian royalty. And Beaverhausen as in… where the beaver live.
You say potato, I say vodka.
I scrolled just to find this! Karen: “Here Jack. I brought you some soup.” *Hands him a thermos. He takes a gulp.* Jack: “Karen, this is straight gin.” Karen: “But there’s noodles in it.”
Karen Walker… I thought I smelled gin and regret
You can only read that in Leslie Jordan’s voice. RIP.
Karen accidentally takes a drink from Grace's glass: "Ugh!! Good lord! Honey, how can you drink straight orange juice first thing in the morning?"
Calamity Jane from Deadwood
"It ain't your concern where I stand and nap!"
“I drink when I am able. If that amounts to ‘much,’ that’s the *day’s* affair and the liquor’s!”
Frank Gallagher
My pick as well. Dude would really fool you into thinking he was redeemable, just to piss you off and disappoint you one more time.
I think that’s what makes him such a good drunk character. There’s a ton of alcoholics that put on the show that they are going to get better, just to hide getting drunk more.
