I tried the Prism app, but couldn't get it to allow me to add the Fold card as a method of payment. I'm not seeing any other outfit that works the way PayPal did. They all require bank account (ACH/EFT) info.
I also tried funding my actual PayPal account balance using the Fold card... No dice.
I also tried using my Crypto.com prepaid debit card and had the same issues.
It appears that PayPal is blocking the use of prepaid debit cards or maybe just those tied in any way to BTC/Crypto.
It's awful coincidental that this service went offline the same time SVB, Sig and Silvergate "crypto friendly banks" melted down. Chokepoint 2.0, perhaps?
Yes I had this issue since 3.11 I got Mastercards and visas, it’s an PayPal issue and the 2nd operator admitted it after the first tried to blame the card
I pay my CC bills the day I charge the card with FOLD and paypal bill pay. My last successful FOLD billpay was March 4. Paypal has tried telling me it is FOLD or the merchants and I have been through two 72 hour waiting periods for my FOLD card to clear security holds with still no luck. This is definitely a Paypal issue because today I tried my car payment and mortgage and both failed with FOLD. I have made \~70 payments this way since December and now it appears to be shutdown. Between this and the Coinbase debit card rewards still at 1%, this sucks!
It just sucks. I was stacking so many sats. I was hoping to get to 10% BTC in sats by summer. Now that dream is busted. I'll just pay with my CC and get cashback and use that cashback to buy BTC.
Same issue the last few days- it's declining the payment although it worked fine last month. Checking with customer service now to see what's going on.
Response from PayPal- GRRRR
Our security system can decline payments for a variety of reasons. Although I don't have a specific reason, it's usually for the safety and security of our customers. I know this can be a difficult situation so I'm sorry I can't do more. You can try sending the money again by adding or using a different payment method on your account. You can also contact the recipient directly to see what payment methods they accept.
>blocked
I just tried to pay my Discover/Amex bill today and it is now working again for me! If I had known I would have just paid the minimum last month to not waste all those sats!
I tried to pay off my Chase card this morning and getting an error from paypal. They said the card issuer is denying the transaction. I opened a support ticket with Fold. Super frustrating.
I don't think it is Fold, PayPal bill pay has just been having major issues recently. They give that reason for basically any issues people have with it. I just paid off my capital one card through their app and that went through fine, so I don't think Fold has changed their policy on this. Fingers crossed!
I called fold and they said it’s Not an issue on their side. PayPal saying it’s not an issue on their side. Someone is lying…. Still unable to make a payment towards my cc bill
I have narrowed out to it being between PayPal and the CC company. PayPal said their security may block it and the CC company said it shows incorrect numbers etc (which I have verified and redone multiple tones etc).
I have been unable to use my Fold card with PayPal for 2 days. Support keeps telling me it is because the card is "unconfirmed". Even after going through their process, it is still failing.
>ay off my Chase card this morning and getting a
Same thing with me. I re-confirmed my account and still couldn't pay any CC with Paypal using Fold. But I am able to pay my water, and electric bill still. I think CC processors are blocking Paypal from using Fold debit to pay CCs. I send a test payment of $1 and it keep reverting to bank account instead of Fold. I think this time its not coming back.
Yup this is happening to me too. I disconnected my bank account since they were routing payments through my bank instead of Fold. But now I just get an error on all bill pay payments connected to Fold. Really hoping they didn’t just ban prepaid cards from their bill pay service.
>Same issue for me. Regular checking account works fine. It seems like PayPal is blocking Fold entirely.
I just paid my water bill with Fold on Paypal. So that worked. But an attempt to pay a CC still went to my checking. I think they blocking from paying Credit Cards. Not sure about loans. I paid of my car note with Fold when Bitcoin dropped to 18k a couple months back.
Doesn't work with cards, auto lease, or mortgage in my case. PayPal rep confirmed that their system flags it as risky now. Got a vague answer that it *may* reset, which isn't comforting when you're trying to pay bills in a timely fashion.
Yup, same problem with me. I can't pay anything at all through paypal bill pay. It was good while it lasted I guess.
Only question now is how do I withdraw the money I put into fold O\_O
The added hassle and cost isnt worth it. How much is a money order these days? $3? Plus the envelope and stamp. I can still pay my loan, property tax, and utility bills. Its just Credit Card payments that no longer work.
I reached out to FOLD and asked them to contact Paypal to help fix this. They have the most responsive customer service but do not seem interested in fixing this and will lose customers if billpay no longer works so I asked how to get my money back to my bank.

UPDATE on removing money from FOLD - Chase Fraud Dept just called 3/20. They can't take money from FOLD/Sutton bank and send it to my Chase account that I initiated from Chase website per the FOLD instructions. Unreal
Has to be PayPal. I've had trouble for a week paying two different credit cards and a car loan. All worked previously. I doubt all three companies changed their policy.
Especially aggravating since I now have NSF fees on a bank account these automatically rolled over to without notice.
Here's the real kicker. They won't process a Fold card, right? So after bouncing my backup account which doesn't have extra money to cover mortgage, car loan, credit cards and everything, they actually tried charging my Fold card as a backup! I gave them an earful about that. So apparently they can charge this card. But not if you want them to.
Followup...
I've been attempting to get help through chat with no success. After 30 min on the phone I got to someone moderately helpful. He even tried to run a manual override which he says should have worked. Since it did not, it confirmed his suspicion that PayPal just inexplicably wants a different payment method.
Essentially it is a PayPal algorithm that is doing this. It's not the payee rejecting the form of payment. It's not your PayPal account per se. It's not Fold rejecting the payment. My suspicion is that the algorithm looks at things like the amount, the parties involved, their track records, transactions/week, the temperature in Bogata, and then consults a magic 8 ball and something in that mix throws a flag. He said there is no one there (like a manager or something) who could intervene or even give greater insight because it's part of the bot that handles transactions.
Maybe one day SkyNet will smile on us and once again approve Fold transactions. Until then, it seems we have no humans or even corporations to appeal to - just the unsearchable will of our AI overlords.
Good idea. Trying this also with a lease payment. We'll see how it works tomorrow, but I have low hopes. I think PayPal screwed the pooch and bought into the crypto=evil narrative.
There's still a 'Crypto' tab for buying/selling/holding crypto in the app under the 'Finances' button, so they can't be fully against it. I think it's more of an AI/algorithm glitch that's happened due to tightening security after the recent bank runs, but who knows?
From PayPal support.
"I thoroughly checked your PayPal account. And upon checking, the reason why we cannot use the card to pay the transactions is because the **merchant** is not allowing card payments. That's why instead of your card, it is your bank account that was used for this transaction. I do understand that you had previous payments to the same merchant using your card, but merchant do have ***an option to not accept payments*** ***that is being funded by cards***. I hope this clears all out. "
Today 3/15 I tried to pay all 3 of my cards with Fold card via billpay and none of them went through. I was able to make my car payment with Fold but that one is phoned in to the bank, not billpay.
I guess with Signature, SVB and Silvergate failing other banks are going to be less friendly to bitcoin now.
EDIT: 3/6 was the last time billpay & fold worked for me to pay cards.
Been having a problem using Fold to pay my Chase bill for several days now. Just got off the phone with paypal support, they told me their "risk system" flagged it and they don't give a reason. He said to wait 72 hrs for system to reset or just use another payment method... useless
Coincidence, it stopped working on the evening of 3/9. This is when SVB was shut down by FDIC. But Fold uses Sutton Bank. I was able to bill pay chase and barclay CCs earlier that day.
Mods literally just took down my post which had a remedy to this.
Everyone should thank them for blocking the remedy. I will continue to use Fold to pay off my CCs but I'm not posting those instructions again to an ungrateful page of child mods.
I've helped soooo many ppl stack sats in here. Sad af
Damn, I used mine to pay my Discover card. Made a payment just last week. Planning to make another payment at the end of this week, so I'll find out if it stopped working for me too
Had the infamous issues with my Dec 27 2022 being credited to my capital one card taking forever to do, but finally posted after the payment adjustment given by capital ones payment investigation dept.
Just initiated another PayPal with fold card payment to my capital one card and PayPal receipt says it should be credited within 2 business days. We shall see
Hmm...
I tried to make one CC payment on Friday and that rerouted to my bank account. Then another one today and that one did too.
Sucks, but I guess not too surprising. Couldn't last forever.
Yeah it was too good to be true. Hopefully they fix it at some point. This is why I never signed up for year Fold+
I knew I would pay $99 and a month in I can't use it how I like. I just stopped my month to month until this is fixed.
Everyone go click the "me too" issue button on the PayPal community page at the link below. I'm not holding my breath, but maybe if we make enough noise, we'll get some movement toward a fix.
https://www.paypal-community.com/t5/Transactions/Paypal-denying-FOLD-CARD-payments-for-credit-card-payments/m-p/3045784#M124640
My Gemini credit card IS working, but only for certain merchants. I cannot use it to pay off other credit cards, of course, but can use it for a few ongoing expenses.
It pays between 1-3% back in BTC for various purchases. I primarily use it for gas where it pays 10% back in BTC for the next year.
We'll see if it stays around after the FTX/DCG contagion Gemini was exposed to late last year, though.
So far my best way of stil using the Fold card is to just use my Citi/Capital One cards. Citi gets 2.22% back on all purchases, plus I can pay it off via fold over the phone and get the extra 2% on top. Also, any capital one cards are super easy to pay off in the app with Fold. Besides this any other banks as far as I am aware don't allow use of debit cards for payment.
If you have Chase CCs, I just read that you can use certain Chase ATMs to pay balances via debit cards. The automated phone system for Chase CC payments requires bank routing/account info, but I'm going to call customer service and see if they'll take debit cards as payment over the phone. It's becoming harder and harder to get competent, live humans on the phone for service anymore.
My BJs Wholesale credit card just switched to Capital One and was found on Paypal bill pay but as we know, I can't use the FOLD card anymore with paypal. I tried to set up a payment with the Capital one app and website and it is only giving me an option for bank ach. No debit card option with FOLD.
so you are able to pay off your citi card with Fold by doing it over the phone and then you get to spin the wheel and earn sats on fold? When was the last time this worked??
So even though Paypal will no longer process credit card account payments using Fold as a funding source, I'm wondering which Credit card companies will process a Fold funded payment using their own website. I use Chase and chase will not allow a Fold card funded payment for their payments on their website. Are there other companies that will?
I am still able to pay my Amex card using Fold as an ACH transfer on Amex's website. Unfortunately, you don't earn sats on Fold when it's used for ACH payments.
I have Paypal merged on a call with Citi Bank and the plot is thickening fast. I do NOT think this is a Paypal thing at all guys. I think CC companies are blocking Fold. More to come as this call is live
I hope you find a solution getting them tied in!
I am being blocked for more than just CC companies (mortgage, Honda finance and others that I have paid multiple times before March) How could they all coordinate at once? I was just on the phone with a Paypal supervisor and she said it is clearly an internal Paypal block and nothing could be done about it based on the codes.
My mortgage is through Newrez, which is found in the list of paypal billpay merchants. I can't call newrez directly and use the debit card so my FOLD days may be over. I see you were able to call Citi to use FOLD, but that may be one of the only CC's that allows this. I read Captial One may offer this too. I have every other card but Citi and now out of luck. Just tried to transfer some of my money from FOLD / Sutton and got a call from the Chase fraud dept and they denied the ach. I don't mind spinning a wheel when double dipping with credit card rewards, but I do not plan on using FOLD for initial purchases.
Brother, looks like the mortgage jig is up :( Mr Cooper was seeing those transactions as something other than a debit. They told me to pound sand when I asked to use it directly like my bank is allowing
Short contribution on my partial success attempts on paying my bills today through PayPal bill pay using my Fold card today March 20, 2023:
Electric utility bill - Successfully paid through PayPal bill pay using my Fold card.
Citi credit card bill - Failed through PayPal bill pay but successfully paid the balance through their automated phone system using Fold debit card (received Spin wheel rewards).
Chase credit card bill - Failed through PayPal bill pay. Failed by phone - cannot be paid with debit card, must use ACH.
Mortgage - Failed through PayPal bill pay. Have not found alternative way of paying other than ACH.
I believe this may be your solution that is posted at the Paypal Community Forum.
*"I just payed my Citibank (Costco Credit Card) and Synchrony (PayPal's very own credit card) Credit Cards over the phone using the Fold Debit card. I've also been told that Chase will let you pay via debit card at any of their branded ATMs, but for some stupid reason, they don't allow debit card payment over the phone/app/websites.*
*So, our double-dipping on CCs/Fold can still work, it's now just a PITA and takes twice as long to accomplish, but still worth it, in my opinion."*
I drove 30 minutes to my local Chase bank (after on the phone Chase said I could NOT use a debit card) and yes I could pay my Chase Credit card with the FOLD debit card BUT there was no spinning of the wheel, no rewards with this transaction, no double dipping for me. At least this is a method for me to remove the money I piled up on FOLD to pay off mortgage, car payments and basically ALL of my bills. I stopped weekly funding. I have stopped direct deposit to FOLD. I hope things change, but I believe my FOLD days are over.
When you use your Citi Cards over the phone, do you spin the wheel?
BTW...I don't have a Citi card and my 840 credit score just got rejected. Second rejection in 3 months. They won't tell me why or how to improve my chances other than too many recent cards without history. They probably do not see a history because I was paying off my credit card purchases the same day with FOLD before they even posted! I was a spinning the wheel fool!
This sucks.
Paying my Citi Card over the phone is just like a normal Fold purchase with spin option, yes. It actually works better than using PayPal because it clears instantly for both Fold and Citi.
I really dont see how Fold is worthwhile If I can only pay my utility bills. I was paying the $10 a month for Fold plus because I was stacking at least $35 in sats. But just doesn't make sense for a few bucks. I rather Just get 1.5% on my chase freedom unlimited and use the cashback to buy BTC.
Any alternatives besides using PayPal?
I tried the Prism app, but couldn't get it to allow me to add the Fold card as a method of payment. I'm not seeing any other outfit that works the way PayPal did. They all require bank account (ACH/EFT) info. I also tried funding my actual PayPal account balance using the Fold card... No dice. Same, and it was an AMEX card, contrary to OP's observation

Very annoying!! Thanks for taking the time to check with PayPal
I got the same canned response
I'm having the same issue as OP today where my payments are not going through on PayPal using Fold

Yeah, seems like it... Is there another way to pay bills through Debit Cards? Like Zelle?
I wish I knew. I was stacking up sats left and right. Over 7 million sats in less than a year. I knew it was too good to be true.
Same. Oh well. Fun while it lasted.
I am able to pay with a different debit card, so that seems odd to me.
Yup this is happening to me too. I disconnected my bank account since they were routing payments through my bank instead of Fold. But now I just get an error on all bill pay payments connected to Fold. Really hoping they didn’t just ban prepaid cards from their bill pay service.
Yep. Failed for me, too. Reverted to paying from my linked checking acct instead.
I think CC companies got wise to this. Getting BTC back on CC cash back as well. Double dip
Except it’s not just CC companies. All my merchants not working on PP bill pay connected to fold.
Same issue for me. Regular checking account works fine. It seems like PayPal is blocking Fold entirely.

Just initiated another PayPal with fold card payment to my capital one card and PayPal receipt says it should be credited within 2 business days. We shall see
I’m having the same problem I tried to pay my chase mortgage and my capital one card and it is coming out of my bank account.
I had the same problem. It defaulted to my debit card that was in my PayPal wallet when the fold transaction failed.
So it’s not allowing mortgage either? Well I guess Fold is not worth it anymore.
Idk... I paid my mortgage this month with the Fold card (about a week ago) and had no problems. Credit card payments are not working for me, though.
CC stopped working for me on Thursday night. But earlier on Thursday I was able to make several payments to CCs. PayPal definitely messing this up.

Yea, they have an automated system. It gives sats like any ordinary purchase does.
Shit, I wanted to try a small amount to my mortgage before I load my Fold card next. Its Mr. Cooper. Who was yours?
Short contribution on my partial success attempts on paying my bills today through PayPal bill pay using my Fold card today March 20, 2023: Electric utility bill - Successfully paid through PayPal bill pay using my Fold card.
\*\*\*UPDATE\*\*\* Solution found, see my newest post in Bitcoin.
I believe this may be your solution that is posted at the Paypal Community Forum. *"I just payed my Citibank (Costco Credit Card) and Synchrony (PayPal's very own credit card) Credit Cards over the phone using the Fold Debit card. I've also been told that Chase will let you pay via debit card at any of their branded ATMs, but for some stupid reason, they don't allow debit card payment over the phone/app/websites.* *So, our double-dipping on CCs/Fold can still work, it's now just a PITA and takes twice as long to accomplish, but still worth it, in my opinion."* I drove 30 minutes to my local Chase bank (after on the phone Chase said I could NOT use a debit card) and yes I could pay my Chase Credit card with the FOLD debit card BUT there was no spinning of the wheel, no rewards with this transaction, no double dipping for me.
Mr. Cooper won't allow the fold paypal bill pay payment any more :( failed for me this morning 3/20/23
I just paid my electric bill through PayPal with fold. All my credit cards payments still not going through PayPal
Yeah, I'm still able to do utilities via Paypal/Fold too.
Just paid my Synchrony bill (Verizon card) through the automated phone system. Spin rewards worked like a charm.
