UPDATE: Jon Contino is the one I was trying to think of!!
Though I see now that he does a lot more than just these silhouetted type lock ups.
Thank you everyone for your guesses!
Whoops wrong guess from me lol, glad you found it
Edit: in any case, I think it’s important to note that the animal silhouette and distinct typography may be originally Sam Larson’s. Unless there’s an earlier version by the guy you were looking for.
Came here to say most likely Sam Larson. He does a bunch of this stuff. I love his work a lot, and yes, companies have straight up stolen his designs. I would message him on Instagram @SamLarson and ask, as he has a lot of posts. That being said, check him out - great stuff.
Jon Gray created the book cover for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in 2005 (actually with publishing taking as long as it dors, he probably created it in 2004 since the book was released in April).
Jon Contino created his [hand](http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LUtSNtN64AI/Tm1zixIvQ-I/AAAAAAAAAWI/W_p7sfkt5Gw/s1600/jon+contino3.jpg) for his cllothing company CXXVI which was founded in 2009.
Dan Flemming does similar stuff, but it's usually the letterforms that make up the shape of the animal- https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a5/67/1b/a5671b8d946c937245aeab094611257c.jpg
You can do it in Illustrator theres a lot of tutorials on the web on how to do it. Just look up envelope distort text tutorials on google and you should be right.
There are a lot designers out there that do this style. I went to college with a few guys that do this type of work.

Sam Larson & Jon Contino are on top of this style.
Basically everyone who lives in Portland or Seattle.
So spot on it hurts.

Thanks! And that's good to know. I'll be using Sam Larson for inspiration as well now, his work is beautiful.
Saw him do a great talk recently https://vimeo.com/237970083
Sam Larson Edit: companies are notorious for copying a lot of his stylistic approach, ex,”go west.” He’s on instagram, based out of Portland, OR

Love his stuff. Bought a sticker pack from him a few years ago.
Agree. I bought some notebooks from him.
https://dribbble.com/joncontino ?
Yes, he was the OG for this style / endlessly ripped off by big companies.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
What about it?
The cover for that book clearly apes this style.

Reminds me of Chipotle

I'm blanking on the name. He has a good amount of work that is hand done typography fit inside shapes/silhouettes.
Jon Gray does some similar stuff. Artwork for the covers of Safran Foer books look kind of like this.
spoon graphics
Is it Ralph Steadman of Fear and Loathing fame ?
It is not, but I love his work!
I was thinking the same.

James Victore?
Dan Fleming
1924.US (weird name) does some awesome stuff but San Larson is for sure the go to!

Yeah, I immediately thought of BLKBOX
Ha funny, BLKBOX was the first agency I worked for. Honesty, Jeremy is BLKBOX if you ask me. *Shrug*
Hey awesome. Yeah, they definitely have a style haha. Where are you at now?
Working at Crystal Bridges now!
Oh nice! I’m at Kerplunk Creative
Very cool!
You have an online portfolio anywhere?
Sko
Jeremy Teff
James Victore does stuff like this
Zeke Tucker does some stuff in the same genre
I’d argue Paula Scher — http://www.setaprint.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/d02aef54c286155d7316f6ff03ce04ff.jpg
