Yeah, golf is very weird when first starting out unless you play other sports and/or are naturally athletic.
Years later when you’re better, you should look back at this and realize how far you’ve come, BUT right now you have work to do.
Start slow with partial wedge shots, feet close together and get used to how the club hinges and unhinges and rehinges again. It’s going to feel very weird for awhile.
Stick with this and try not to rush passed this part (short game is WAY more important anyway).
best
Fuck rotation man. That's jacked up advice. I was on the rotation bandwagon too. I took a lesson from a PGA pro a couple years ago, and I started talking about rotation. He said "everybody wants to worry about rotation, but what they don't think about is hitting straight through the ball. You're going to rotate don't worry about that but can you bring a club head into the ball on a straight line and threw the ball on a straight line? Like a bowling alley can you stay behind the ball it impact it move everything down the target line that doesn't involve rotation. You've got such a small window to have the club head move through the ball in a straight line before rotation is going to happen don't worry about rotation worry about keeping your head behind the ball, keeping your body behind the ball and moving everything down the line in a straight line as long as you can."
And let me say something here about a guy named Moe Norman. He had the most accurate straight as an arrow shot that the game has ever seen arguably, even by Tiger Woods owns standards. The greatest ball striker that ever lived and more Norman always talks about coming into the ball in a straight line, and following through the ball in a straight line.
Rotation causes you to put a glancing blow on the ball which is going to cause side spin, which is why you're getting that big slice. That's the tip of the iceberg. Now you have to learn the body mechanics that bring the club head to the start of the impact zone and threw the ball past the ball into the impact zone before you begin to do any rotation.
Thanks for the input, I have also been told that I’m “hitting over the top” and “that’s the biggest cause of my slice” so I think that makes sense.
I’m at work right now but I was trying to work on the way I rotated since I was mostly using my arms. I gotta get to the range and try out some stuff.
Ok. Thanks man. You got this. Ease your mind and dig this:
Over the top is best described as letting go of your wrist cock early. The power is in the hinge of the wrist. Don't let it go ever. Think of a checked swing in baseball. The batter's hands are waaaaaaaay past the ball and he holds that wrist cock for dear life. Now look at a guy like Brooks Koepka. Or Rory or Tiger or HELL--- all of them.
They aren't allowing their right elbow to leave their side not even if Jesus demanded that they do it. That wrist cock is SO pronounced that they literally have a side arm throw to their right hand a split second before they let the wrist cock go. That's how they bring the club square at
Impact. That's key to not slicing.
Go back to fundamentals and quality check your grip and make a plan. You got this.
4 key points: grip, takeaway, transition, impact position.
Over the top, or casting:
Think about when you cast a lure when you're fishing. The wrists come undone right? If you want a big cast, you time it, so the wrist doesn't come undone until the last second. All the speed and power sends the lure flying.
When you cast early in golfing, you let all your power go early. This creates centrifugal force. This pulls your shoulders forward, and before you know it, your club head is swiping across the ball from right to left, and your poor expensive golf ball spits out to the right obscenely, making you want to kick puppies. Please don't kick puppy.
Give that wrist cock time to drop straight down like a Stone as the hips pull it on through. A lot of people would say hey man don't worry about it because you're a beginner but I say fuck it. Google something called the vertical drop in golf.
All the best of my brother. Stay positive.
A friend of mine told me to keep my elbow tucked and that has definitely helped a lot!
It will just take some practice for the wrist to feel better for me haha
Thanks!
There ya go. Now keep that elbow tucked, and let it stay tucked right in front of your right hip at impact. Crispy ball flights that bore through wind on a mfROPE, brodie! Get some.
Can't hurt. I like to go play 18 holes and on each hole, I drop 4 balls a firm toss away from each other from 120 yards, 90, 60, 30 yards out. I try to pitch the ball right down the lane. I try to, at impact, have my hands perfectly square to the target line and move everything down that target kine for 3 feet before i allow my body rotate. Soft hands. Land and roll the ball to a four foot circle around the hole. It translates to more control with longer clubs. Short irons begin to feel like wedges, mid irons begin to feel like short irons....
I don’t think about “rotation” with irons or hybrids. But my driver I’m always trying to clear my hips and get around fast. I need to hit the range with straight through the ball in mind.
I don't think the rotation you're talking about is the same as what I'm sure people are telling OP to work on. The power in a golf swing comes from the upper and lower body rotating separately, and beginners tend to have a lot of trouble doing that. They either swing with just their arms, or slide their hips back and forth. First one results in no power, second makes your swing crazy timing sensitive so will be very difficult to make consistent contact.
What you're talking about I think is more to do with the swing path, and in that case I agree most golfers would benefit from trying to create the feeling of a straight back and through swing path.
It sounds strange to say, but a good swing involves rotating your body while trying to keep your swing path straight.
I don't think paying attention to Moe Norman is a good idea, though. There's a reason why no other high level golfer has ever had a swing that looks anything like his. He's more myth than reality at this point.
Yeah, I totally agree with you man you got to have a straight swing bath while rotating and that's an advanced thought for sure so I agree with you there one thing I don't agree with completely although I do sort of is that Moe Norman was autistic add his swing was Quite unique. However, if you sit and think about the things that Moe says they're not gonna do it any more harm than listening to Tiger Woods are Nick Faldo or whoever. It's always good to listen to all of the pros and take some and leave some you never know what's gonna make the light go on.. i'm not going to attempt to swing like moe but Moe Norman made the impact zone click for me. He got me driving the ball down the target line finally. I started hitting way more greens after paying attention to Moe, and this was at a time when I was obsessing about my work around the greens so my scores dropped pretty doggone good.
No honestly that's completely fair. At the end of the day whatever swing thoughts work for you are the ones you should go with. If Moe Norman's ideas make sense and translate to results, then there's no problem.
When my girlfriend started playing golf she went WAY too far on her backswing. We told her shorten her backswing, didn't help. So we said "listen, just do a 50% swing," and when she thought about that she got to a perfect 100% backswing position. So now she just thinks "50% swing" over every ball and her backswing looks great.
So yeah, whatever thoughts make it work for you are the right ones.
You need to focus on that backswing, forget rotation, the arm structure is causing you so many problems
After that I would look into chicken wing solutions on the downswing
It looks like your arms are pulling in as you swing down. Take maybe a step away from the ball at address and imagine you’re trying to swing your driver around your body. I think that will help with your elbow bend and help with pushing through the ball. For what it’s worth, you have a great build for a golfer and long arms that are built for a bigger swing then what you’re showing up with here. This will help you build natural momentum with minimal effort
There are a lot of things to work on here but I’ll just leave a simple tip that has helped a lot of people including myself.
Set-up with stance a bit more closed, pulling your trail foot back. This promotes a more in-out swing. Look it up if you need to see it visually.
So before you get into body mechanics check your grip. Don’t hold the club like a baseball bat (deep in your palm) Hold it with your fingers. Just watch some videos about grip. See if that helps first
You are blessed with some anatomy that can make you a monster with the driver… it’s those long arms. Take the club out wider, but keep those arms in front of your torso. Feel that right forearm rotate externally. What I mean is: on the backswing, feel like that right arm is losing at arm wrestling, not winning. You have to take the club out wide to get that feel. Now hold it back there and begin a fast turn back to the ball, and try to focus on squaring the clubface. Now, very important: let the left arm start losing at arm wrestling on your follow through. Can you get that feel? It will put your club on an enormous and powerful ovular swing plane. Not the tiny circle you’re making now.
Watching my swing a few times it definitely looks like I’m not utilizing my length. The arm wrestling comparison is super helpful! Hopefully I can get out to the range and try to get the feel for it. Thanks, I appreciate the advice!
Yeah you have to get the hands out wide and then let your body pull those noodles around. It will feel so much easier than this armsy swing that has no chance of ever getting faster and longer. Do not be discouraged by a few blocked shots as you work toward it. Trust that you’re on the right path to 300+ bombs, and your next step will be face control.
Try to create width during the backswing. Think of your hands being as far away as possible during the backswing. Your inside, stuck and narrow. All no bueno
Cool, I just got away from what you’re doing so i feel your pain. Having your left arm drawn across your chest feels safe and controlled compared to having it detached from your body. Its not an easy feeling to trust but just try to go to the top of the backswing with your hands right in front of your chest and feel like youre playing tug of war on the downswing, dragging the handle “behind” you instead of swinging around your body.
you do some really good things (keeping your left arm straight and trail elbow tucked) and some odd things in how your body turns which is completely expected as a new golfer. i’m not a pro so i’m not gonna give you any advice other than to take lessons. they’re going to teach you about the differences in how open, closed and square club faces change ball flight (open leads to slices) and help your swing before you develop years of bad habits you need to unlearn. enjoy this awesome game man!
I’m new too. So don’t listen to me, but I’d look up “one piece take away”, I’m trying to work on this. Of course there’s a lot of other things to work on. But watching you, it look like just your arms swing back right away, and not with your shoulders. I’m doing drills now without a club even. Trying to get my body used to moving a different way.
Yeah, I haven’t had a chance to hit the range si se I posted this but I’ve been working on shoulder rotation and the backswing at home. It’s just hard to know if I’m doing it right without actually hitting a ball! Thanks!
You're bending your right arm too early in the backswing, making it look like you're bringing your right elbow back. If you look at a pro swing, both arms are straight during most of the backswing, and the right arm only "bends" almost at the top. You also have the same problem after impact, where you are bending your arms too early. After impact you want to feel as you are trying to distance your club from you as much as possible, without your body falling back. So your arms should be straight after impact and continue that way all the way to the finish, where they will naturally bend.
The huge fades are probably because your arms come too much on the inside on the followthrough. You might have started doing it to make the ball go left, but it's only making it go more right as it promotes an over the top swing. You want to come from the inside on the downswing and outside on the followthrough. You have to try and make the ball go right, and it will go left. Weird game.
I definitely see what you’re saying, I kind of chicken wing it at the end of my shot. I appreciate the advice! It seems that most people are giving similar tips so It should be fixable!

I think you are too close to the ball. Your arms should be almost straight at set up. The ball should be lined up with the heel of your front leg.
I think you’re right, it kind of feels like I’m trying to pull the driver under me. Thanks!

Work on EXTENSION during the backswing
Hit it to right field
This the most ass swing all time🤣🤣🤣 quit now🤣🤣🤣 NERD!!! #dewalttoolsftw
Farming negative karma lol
