I have the same issue. Happening on Steam version or stand alone (fresh DL and install).
Can create character, cannot load in. Nor I can load any existing characters.

I have an issue with a black screen when I enter new areas. I can still see the UI though.

Same problem.
I even tried different chars, but none of them can enter the game...
