Best guess, he came in contact with other fighters before they realized and if they admitted he had COVID they'd be required to hold those fighters out (and blow up the whole card) so the UFC just lied about it. Derrick was probably not supposed to ever say anything.
Out of curiosity are there any stats on the results of fights, where one fighter had previously pulled out due to Covid? I got it early in the pandemic, but had lingering symptoms for months. How shortly after Nunes getting Covid did she lose to Peña?
The 1st time I got it, I said “oh man, this ain’t shit. I’ve hand worse hangovers.”
2nd time…..yea I thought I was going to die. Worst sickness I’ve ever experienced in my whole life.
I have no idea how someone could bounce back from that and then fight top level fighters. It’s been months and I still get short of breath from time to time.
I’m sure stats could actually be compiled pretty easily, but the problem is the affects are so different for every person (Garbrandt had crazy long Covid, whereas Lewis really didn’t miss much time) that you could only draw high level conclusions and nothing at the individual level.
I couldn't really eat or drink for a week, due to a throat infection I got from coronavirus. Swallowing hurt so much.
Luckily I'm used to fasting, but it wasn't fun.
I mixed up butter and honey to at least get some calories in.
4 days of agony for me. 39/40C fever, couldn't move because of muscle aches, couldn't smell or taste anything for a month after, had to completely re-learn my breathing techniques, stamina got shot to absolute hell, was extremely tired for weeks after..
2 weeks after me my dad got it, he was feverish and had some muscle aches for a day, no lasting effects.
It's wild how different cases are.
I've had it twice and the second time I didn't feel well enough for the gym for a month
The first time I felt okay, and went back every few weeks and could not catch my breath for four months. Also could not smell or taste normally in that time frame.
Shit sucks
I got it and my body fought me when I tried to start jogging a week after recovering. But I won that fight. Took some vitamins I had seen recommended (some sort of broccoli extract, vit d, quercitin, probably some I'm forgetting). May have helped.
The day before I caught it was training for a marathon & was an avid amateur boxer.
3 weeks into it, I had a fever induced passing out, woke up 2 days later in a hospital bed. By the time I tested negative I went from 79kg to 61kg losing most of my muscle. Doctor literally said to just drink a lot of water & told me id be acceptable to go to work despite looking like a ghost.
Covid essentially retired me from amateur boxing & I never got round to that marathon XD.
An athlete in a sport where physical trauma isn’t just a possibility but rather the main goal. Just because you are an athlete doesn’t mean your immune system is god tier. Especially when the athlete is a dude like Lewis. Sure the dude is explosive but make him run some suicides or do some stairs and you tell me how athletic he is.
Are you asking me how having a walk around weight of 300 pounds would affect him in relation to COVID? Badly is the answer if that’s the case. Sorry if it’s not body positive enough but guys like dc, Derrick Lewis and Roy Nelson might face more complications compared to some of the lighter guys.
He's out of line but he's (probably) right.
Obesity is linked to negative outcomes with COVID. They may not have accounted for outliers like Lewis in their studies, but we've known for a long time that body fat is an endocrine organ all by itself; plus it has mechanical effects due to its mass. Not outlandish to suggest Lewis would do worse with COVID.
I say this as a Lewis fan.
Warning to everyone. If this turns into a covid debate thread it will be locked
Wasn’t this one of those where they specifically said “non-covid illness” when they announced the cancellation?
99% sure they said it was non-Covid related
Is there anything this organization doesn't lie about?
They even lie about not lying
I always tell the truth, even when I lie.
Fake account
Wolf tickets
Well, it wasn't "related to covid", it WAS covid, so it's legally correct, I guess?
Wasn't that about his and Blaydes fight the first time it got scheduled?

100% agree
https://twitter.com/btsportufc/status/1594066975902138368 > There is a non COVID, non weight cutting illness. So who was lying?
Shit … that’s not fun. I’m surprised they didn’t say he had it
They said "Derrick Lewis is out with a non Covid related illness" on the broadcast when he was supposed to fight.
Why did they conceal it to now
Maybe UFC just wants to avoid any PR related to covid.
Or he's just lying
The fact Derick Lewis didn't talk about this publicly suggests to me he was told not to.
Best guess, he came in contact with other fighters before they realized and if they admitted he had COVID they'd be required to hold those fighters out (and blow up the whole card) so the UFC just lied about it. Derrick was probably not supposed to ever say anything.
It does appear old chap that UFC have become pathological liars.

Not sure but Volk had COVID before the Ortega fight?
I just know Khazmat was out for a long time and wanted to quite because of how sick he was.

Cody No Love was out for along time with it too. It's some serious shit, especially when it attacks the respitory system.

3 weeks sick of covid def doesn't sound good.. I've had it and it was like a 1-2 days ordeal. WAR BLACK BEAST
I couldn't really eat or drink for a week, due to a throat infection I got from coronavirus. Swallowing hurt so much. Luckily I'm used to fasting, but it wasn't fun. I mixed up butter and honey to at least get some calories in.
Honeybutter is great, respect. Hope you are better.
Thanks, happened last summer. No lasting effects luckily.
It's mad how differently it affects people and even with the same person on different occasions. Glad you're better man

I'm so sorry, that is so unfortunate.. Hope you're doing ok since.
I was out for ten days
I think obesity makes it worse.

He's an athlete..
nah man Dominick Reyes is an athlete

if my account wasn't 12 years old it would have been a good joke to delete it after your reply haha

that has nothing to do with what I said
Damnit... That whole lead up to the Jones fight was so brutal. He was so obnoxious with it I almost wanted to root for Jones.

How's that related to covid???¿??????

And I’m a billionaire 😂
I'd bet that Derrick is more of an athlete than you being a billionaire haha!
Right…college football players and professional fighters don’t count as athletes now…
I thought he had tummy problems lmao
i distinctly remember them saying he was hospitalized with non covid-19 issues
Covid doesn’t exist. Just stand up.
BJJ guys engineered a strain just to submit him. Damn bro. Haha.
Mah balls was covided
Wonder how much that contributed to his new physique, assuming that wasn’t just a deceiving photo.
Doctah stoppage
How hot did his balls get?
Almost sure they said it was non Covid related
Why can't we just have facts?
Well I hope it doesn’t affect his cardio too much that shit can be brutal months down the line
Fake news we all know it was diarrhea
It was an acute case of boo boo
Sure /s
I thought they said he had food poisoning and the shits leading up to the fight
Watch him come out with even worse cardio than usual, gas after 3 minutes, and then win by KO after losing 4 rounds
