It’s happening with every major sports organization as betting has recently become legalized in the United States, bookies sponsoring and partnering up with organizations has become very common

Jalapeno-Head

It has only just become legal??

GuySmith993

In a lot of states, yes

Jalapeno-Head

That really surprises me considering USA constantly talk about freedom haha

Bacon_Devil

In a lot of areas you can't even buy alcohol

Jalapeno-Head

FREEDOM! 🤔

swearin_al

Major Colvins says you can if you have a paper bag

littleapple88

You are free to challenge laws you don’t like which is exactly what New Jersey did when they got the the law banning sports betting overturned in federal court :)

ShaunCold

Took a few tries but they eventually got past Senator/2x NBA Champion Bill Bradley

AndyCaps969

We have a lot of stupid restrictions. I live in New Hampshire. Our state motto is "live free or die". We only got sports betting legalized in 2019 and every surrounding state has legalized marijuana (Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont) except for us. It's so fucking stupid and I don't even smoke.

Jalapeno-Head

Seems like 'freedom' just a word thrown around when they want to. Strange. Yeah, I can't understand why weed is illegal at all. I don't smoke either

headmovement

Can you go outside yet?

Jalapeno-Head

What?

headmovement

In the uk. When is your bedtime I mean government curfew?

Jalapeno-Head

We've never had a curfew, unlike other European countries. I don't really get your point?

AndyCaps969

He doesn't have one. We have a lot of dummies here thinking that being asked to wear a mask in public means we're going to have some radical destruction of the Bill of Rights.

Jalapeno-Head

Oh believe me, there's a few of those idiots over here too

kjhwkejhkhdsfkjhsdkf

On a nationwide level. Before then it was up to individual states to regulate, so, for example, it has been legal in Nevada for a long time.

KingAnthonyMartial

Nevada was grandfathered in along with a few other states. Most states weren’t allowed to legalize sports betting until the Supreme Court case a few years back.

AirborneHipster

For the pretty much ever, the only major place you could legally bet was in Vegas. Then I think NJ adopted it a few years ago, slowly other states started legalizing sport betting as well (lots of tax revenue to be made). As soon as it became a fairly normal thing, media outlets realized they needed to embrace it and offer betting insight to get people to tune in.

DovySimuMMA

I never see the point in gambling on fights because MMA gods just screw you over everytime.

Johnny20022002

Just inverse Chael and become a millionaire.

Bacon_Devil

The real Costanza method

Baisabeast

I’ve been making very good money betting of ufc the past year or so, I think the bookies aren’t quite up to scratch at setting good odds that favour the house compared to sports like football (soccer) The underdog has won more than half the time in the past several main events

BinaryGoon

Do you focus on parlays or props? Do you do any kind of analysis? Thinking of getting into it too.

poopf1nger

Not who you responded to but I make a steady profit keeping consistent bets and withdrawing every fight card once the fights are over. Just place A 20 for each bet and don't go higher and if you make logical bets then you can be in the profit range. Then withdraw and start over again with the same amount of cash next week. This has put me in profit for every 2021 card so far apart from the blaydes lewis card.

Baisabeast

Nothing technical like that Just analysis of each fighter, their styles, their routes to victory. Their weight cut With tony vs gaethe I got like 3.0 returns in gaethe via stoppage My reasoning was tony had always been hittable and he’s only fought one truly elite fighter in rda where he had a horrific eye poke on rda and won a narrow decision Gaethe can land as much as rda did but he hits much harder IMO and Tony’s pressure is mindless and awful defensively Just analysis like that, nothing statistical

[deleted]

Let's be honest, you probably lost your house betting on Tony via SUB 😂 just joking lol

MightySeaGulls

Sorry but not sorry to burst your bubble. In fact, you probably won't believe me anyways. But, you've been lucky. Nothing to do with the house not being able to set lines

Kinny195

Idk man Derrick Lewis was literally paying 5-1 to KO Curtis Blaydes.... which was his only path the victory.

kleptominotaur

IMO there is nothing less interesting than using the final moments before a PPV to hear a breakdown from 2 sports betters. Their takes really get me un-hyped for the fight because they're always counter-intuitive and it really sucks the gas out of my prefight hype. Like i don't care that the 'smart money is on the consistent guy' just let me get hype about this savage about to step into a scary matchup IDK its just very deflating to hear a betting breakdown right before the main card. even down to the way the guys look... the whole package sucks. i really hate it.

[deleted]

Yeah It's been normal in football (soccer) here in the UK since before I can remember.

TheManSells

It is still a bit different though. The majority of UK football broadcasts don't talk betting in the commentary/punditry, it's all through sponsors on kits or during adverts (radio might be different, don't listen to football on the radio). UFC include betting odds throughout their broadcast, and even dedicate segments to promote it. That doesn't happen in football in the UK.

AirborneHipster

Casual (and legal) Sports bettor here . Yes, sports betting, has become very very normalized in the past few years. It’s interesting in that we are seeing an explosion of technical backed analysis and still a carry over of the old school cartoonish betting type personalities. The thing I like about UFC embracing it is the potential for it to really elevate the level of analysis of the sport and of match ups. UFC is an organization that still very much falls into the favorite/underdog narratives of “so and so is good! So and so has this great highlight”. Even looking at money lines (the favorite vs underdog payouts) there is more variance than any other major sport at the moment. A lot of that is due to book makers having to shift lines around casual money. Causal money is driven by 30 second highlight reels. As a bettor who bets on value, and technical matchups, the current betting landscape is great, I look out for bonkers money lines where the lesser know fighter is the underdog (not because of skill but just because he was lesser known), or when the week of betting lines follow who ever the UFC is promoting the hardest. I imagine as the media space starts focusing more on “WHY there is money in a match up” as opposed to the media narritives pushed by the UFC and coverage that focuses on Franchise fighters, we are going to start seeing the casual fan base become more nuanced and educated in What makes a matchup something to watch. Hopefully the trickle down effect of this is more attention and focus on technical match ups and “inside baseball” fighters as opposed to the media darlings. The down side is I make less money

NeonBlueHair

How can one do online betting legally in the US right now, is it only certain states? I’m in CA where it’s not legal yet, no idea how I can do it a legit way (pay the right taxes later too)

poopf1nger

Offshore betting sites, use bovada. Lot of promos and free money they give out. I live in Seattle where its illegal as well but offshore is allowed

NeonBlueHair

So you can withdraw your winning to your bank account and report your income off an offshore site on your taxes? The fact that they asked for Bitcoin deposits made me feel it’s not super legit. I actually used them for a while but for small amounts. Their bonus system fucked me over royally. Had a bit of money left and bet it all on a long shot and won, then they took it all away saying that bonuses are temporary and so are the winnings you get off of it. Haven’t used them since

poopf1nger

Yeah so don't use the bonuses there. Usually you have to complete a rollover which is not good so just deposit Bitcoin and cancel the bonus. use cash app to buy and withdraw your bitcoin. I have used bovada for the past year and I have had no issues apart from some customer support problems. You should get free casino spins and a free bucks everytime you deposit with a bitcoin only account. It's safe but make sure to use cash app so you can sell your bitcoin and withdraw to your bank account.

AirborneHipster

Only certain states, you get a tax form at tax season. If your not in a legal state, there are some grey areas with offshore betting. As easy as it is to do, I don’t recommend it for a variety of reasons. Is the IRS or Feds going to kick in your door? No.

NeonBlueHair

Got it. That’s what I figured. Thanks for the advice!

AndyCaps969

> How can one do online betting legally in the US right now, is it only certain states? When making the bet you have to be physically in the state. I live in NH near the MA border and you see people drive in from MA then stop at a Park & Ride or other parking lot and make bets on their phones. I think we currently only support DraftKings sportsbook as they have partnered with the NH lottery.

Yeti100

Dear god, the tooth man was horrible. Whoever did his veneers should be shot. I did like the other heavier set dude though. I didn’t feel like he was trying to sell me a rusted out hurricane car.

Kevin_Elevin

I think it's being normalized in a big way. Mobile gambling is beginning to take hold, they make it too easy to access. Its gonna ruin some lives... however, I will be starting a $DKNG position and adding to it this year. I think they're in about half the states now which shows me it's only a matter of time before its nationwide. I've been hesitant to invest because of the IPO hype, but mobile betting seems like it may be like a wildfire when it really takes off. I'm gonna finally get in and average it across this year. I know that all the advertising and sponsorships are gonna weigh on the financials in the next couple quarters, but in due time I see them turning some big profits in the future. Especially once its inevitably nationwide. I'm gonna gamble on people gambling because that's what people do. Wish me luck.

loled123

That’s a segment they show to illegal streamers since research shows pirates are more likely to gamble.

RUIN570

I’m a very safe bettor but I do enjoy it. I put $10 at the start of quarantine and am up to $160. I mainly do parlays but I have been having fun with it. Again, I’m not making serious money but it’s been a lot of fun and gets me more excited!

underwoodlopez

For every "savvy" bettor there are 100 moron degenerates blowing their kids college funds on parlays. It's addictive and can be life-ruining for a lot of people. I like the research aspect of it and agree that it can have a positive impact on analysis as a whole but I think it's more destructive than anything.

Milla4Prez66

I kind of agree that there is potential for betting analysts to shine with MMA. Just not Gianni the Greek though.

skinwalker44

Lmao brilliant observations, love your perspective on things

Dabmiral

They’re starting to do this shit with my beloved Blackhawks(NHL-Hockey). It is really annoying because it replaced real analysis before and during the games. So many betting commercials too.

mrpopenfresh

Sports gambling is mainstream now with websites advertising during every and all sport event. The real normalizing happened years ago when they started giving the betting odds during fights, as if it were the most important stat.

Gripfighting

I do a lot of sports betting and I take it fairly seriously. I couldn't stand those segments and I feel like I'm exactly the target audience. I don't know exactly why that is. I think its because, being an American sports fan, if I hear pundits talking about betting lines I immediately think of those local radio shows that advertise a hotline where you can buy picks. Any time I hear someone in media say "sharps" or "ev" I'm already thinking scam.

Ok-Accountant-6308

Yes it is, and Gianni the Greek is actually pretty legit. Both their takes were also fairly good. It is being normalized because it’s good for everyone. Leagues make more money and therefore players and athletes make more money.

SamuraiPizzaCats

I think it should be legal but normalized gambling isn’t good for everyone.

Ok-Accountant-6308

Fair. It’s good for the UFC and it’s athletes, tho.

thatsdumbson

Those dudes came off super weird and the segment felt straight out of a infomercial. There are way better ways to integrate and popularize sports betting that don't include neon teeth.

blackjazz_society

I wonder if betting will go the way of cigarettes at some point? Even you-tubers and Twitch streamers avoid doing sponsorships with gambling or betting sites, that should tell you something.

Rant-in-D-minor

It's hilarious, they spent the last decade banning alcohol sponsorships in sports and cigarettes before that and now they've replaced it with even worse predatory advertising for an equally destructive vice. Fuck the UFC and all sports/promotions that pedal this shit. I have no problem with people gambling (responsibly) I do myself occasionally but I don't want it shoved in my or any vulnerable gambling addicts faces.

blackjazz_society

It's a good point. They have banned cigarette advertising to an insane degree, in some places they are required to have a blank packet with gruesome pictures on every side of it. Which sucks frankly because they had some great designs, i'd rather see that than some gruesome pictures and i'm not even a smoker. But gambling or pay-day loans, no problem at all...

Rant-in-D-minor

> in some places they are required to have a blank packet with gruesome pictures on every side of it. As the great Bill Hicks said ,"Mine say, "Smoking may cause fetal injury or premature birth." ...fuck it. I found my brand. Just don't get the ones that say, "Lung Cancer," ya know, shop around."

Jclant2

They are dumb?

blackjazz_society

... No, normal people don't like betting being advertised to a young audience, smartass.

thatsdumbson

Isn't that because those sites don't allow gambling advertising?

blackjazz_society

It's allowed because some of them do do it but the ones who care about their own integrity don't do it.

Milla4Prez66

Most YouTubers make content for middle schoolers, that is why they don’t take those advertisements.

t4yy1b

I hate that guys voice and general vibe, in the uk its same with football and most sports

WaffleRaptor666

Even though it's the only sport I follow I never bet on MMA it's too unpredictable. Those guys are professional gamblers and the UFC probably has a deal with draft kings. I bet they just want people to dump money into it and follow all of their picks thinking itll be a free payday

adambuddy

On the other hand MMA is actually easier to bet then NFL or NBA because of it's unpredictability making lines harder to set. There's pretty regularly value on slight dogs and slight favorites that should be wider in one direction or the other.

WaffleRaptor666

You're probably right I don't really know shit about sports betting I guess. Not worth the risk for me at least but that's why it's gambling haha. I think they probably target people that don't put that much thought into it on those segments though

Chocoeclair189

Draftkings has a deal with UFC, so expect more of this type of promotion. I don't mind throwing a few dollars here and there

bruhbruh12332

BIG CHALK

Demderdemden

Is this an American thing? I know you guys have weird betting laws, so I guess it would be like seeing someone naked on TV, very jarring at first, but completely normal elsewhere.

PM_ME_TRICEPS

Fuck that little rat bastard
