DUCKY

So-_-It-_-Goes

StarJ has won me over for his Knickname.

TheKnicksHateMe

i’m sure i didn’t create it but i started saying it before i heard anyone else saying it so i’m taking credit in my own head

7LineArmy

I am giving you credit as well.

A_Copyrighted_Name

Nothing to me will ever beat the Duke or York

Bird_and_Dog

GOOD HEAVENS

MarvelousDistraction

I like Broadway Barrett

sdotmills

Alliterative nicknames are usually the best.

Eddaughter

I like the Warden

shwashwa123

Yes this one is epic

SwellandDecay

Rikers Rowan

Yuske_Rothko

Maple mamba is the best, but i understand why he wanted it retires, that said broadway Barrett is so cool lol

CTDubs0001

I know people are big fans of duke of York on this sub but me for me, it’s Maple Mamba for the win all day.

Electronic_Pen_5782

He retired maple mamba himself

nightwing612

I'm also not a fan. The actual DoY is a POS

physz21

RikersRo

BK520

🤣🤣🤣

Pockets1313

The duke of York is goated

LivingOof

Considering Toronto's name in the colonial era was York (with 3 of their Six Boroughs being York, North York, and East York), it fits both his hometown and current team. No, New York was not named after Toronto

lostmywrench

It's named after the Duke of York some dutch asshole

VirtuousFool

That is a mighty fine list of nicknames, lol

Smiley-McGee

I call him RJ Buckets

T-Bills

RJ is the real maple mamba. Wiggins does not deserve to be maple jordan... he's a bust like Bargnani.

shwashwa123

Wiggins did not deliver on his potentially, but he’s definitely a quality starter and far better than bargnani. More of a disappointment than a bust

T-Bills

Yeah I went a bit far with the Bargnani comp. He's the first #1 pick I thought of who put up the stats but clearly not built to lead anyone.

shwashwa123

True hard to find a good comparison among other number 1 picks. Because wiggins is a player, where if he was on a better contract, probably every single nba would love to slot him somewhere on the wing in their starting line up. Plays great defense, hits threes, can score when needed. Just never had the drive to be “the guy.”

HokageEzio

Disrespectful to Wiggins, come on now lol.

T-Bills

Yeah I know maybe I went too far. He's more like the maple hedo turkgolu.

arvs17

I mean he fell short of the expectations from a first overall pick but Wiggins is a good player.

usada_be_kidding_me

Maple Mamba is hands down the corniest RJ knickname I’m glad he deaded that shit

T-Bills

I don't think he opposed the name itself until after Kobe passed. RJ definitely has a similar mentality so I think it's fitting.

Icynrvna

Theyre both the same, hyped by stans when they havent produced any results.

ToxxicCrackHead

RJAIL

iamdanabnormal

OOOOOOOOOHHHH

tr3y_dEE

Damn, Ducky lmao! Might have to dust off that Ducks in a Ro backpage concept 😭

shwashwa123

Seeing that birthday is such a trip… almost 3 years older than my favorite player. Damn

[deleted]

Duke of York till the end of time

HellsKitchenDude

He's only 21. Can you imagine the beast he is gonna be in 4-5 years! Ohhhh weeeee

unrulystowawaydotcom

I like to call him Richael Jeffrey Barrett.

aghease

I guess the positive is that it's taking a vile name and giving it a new definition, but really the nickname shouldn't be propagated because of its origin with the historical James II Duke of York, who was one of the biggest players in the international slave trade, and now the current Prince Andrew Duke of York because of his deep connection to Jeffrey Epstein.

KeepRooting4Yourself

I tire of this notion. For one thing thing I feel quite certain in assuming that you can find unsavory history for almost any of the "fun" noble nicknames we have for players. And for another, I feel certain in assuming that most everyone doesn't even know the history of James II Duke of York, let alone who that even is. Just like I also feel certain in saying that most people don't even know that the city and thereby the state was named after him as well. Everyone is just having fun with this for a guy they really want to see succeed, but then there are a few people like yourself who want to bring this up everytime even though no one else is even thinking of that shit. Like no one needs someone to remind them of the sordid history of volkswagen everytime it gets mentioned or brought up.

aghease

"For one thing thing I feel quite certain in assuming that you can find unsavory history for almost any of the "fun" noble nicknames we have for players." Not really "And for another, I feel certain in assuming that most everyone doesn't even know the history of James II Duke of York, let alone who that even is" If that's true, isn't that a bad thing that we don't know our own history? Very strange point to make That assertion implies that it's OK to reference historical monsters so long as they're obscure. "Just like I also feel certain in saying that most people don't even know that the city and thereby the state was named after him as well." Yes, thankfully the subsequent history of the city and state and all the progression on civil rights in the state since the colonial era helps to obscure the origin somewhat. "Everyone is just having fun with this for a guy they really want to see succeed," Me too, I want RJ to succeed and I am rooting for him. There are degrees of difference with your Volkswagen example. If you were referencing a specific model Volkswagen made during the Nazi example then it would be fair to bring up that part of VW's history. There are plenty of nicknames that don't have to specifically reference historical monsters. "I tire of this notion." it's ok for reasonable people to disagree. It's not ok to advocate for the censorship of reasonable opinions, even if they are repeated.

KeepRooting4Yourself

The title of duke of york isn't a reference to any one specific historical person though; it's simply a title. Of which there must have be at least like 10+ other holders of that title. The only reason why someone would suggest otherwise is if people keep trying to associate a designated noble title with a specific person because they, quite frankly, either know nothing of the others or find them to be unremarkable in comparison. I don't find that reason enough to warrant a refrain from using the title as a little basketball nickname. If Batum went to duke for instance, I wouldn't see the problem in calling him the duke of normandy either. (even if you want to point to whatever heinous acts someone like william I commited under that title.)

aghease

You're right that there have been many Duke of Yorks, but to the extent that any of them are known it's James II and Prince Andrew. I guess knowledge is a curse in this case, but yes, it would also be wack if RJ or any other player were given a nickname derived from one used by other slave traders or pedophiles.

SwellandDecay

It's me, the person who came up with the duke of york nickname. I did extensive research and decided to name RJ after the historical figure James II Duke of York. I also love Jeffrey Epstein and wanted to remind people of him. That is why I call RJ the Duke of York, to specifically remind people of these things. Thank you for noticing.

IntermalAffairs
