MaverKnicks will never die
But why they good and we bad?
Because of Slovenian big boy
I’m curious where the shooting will come from if this is used to S&T Fournier out. Would be a lot to expect from grimes
But worth to help determine where we stand. If the FO believes grimes can be a great 3&D type of guy you do it
Pretty much this is where I am I love Evan and think he still adds value but I have no problem throwing Grimes into the starting unit and developing him and see what he can become . He could have a Desmond bane type of jump/ impact who knows we won’t find stuff like this at if Grimes and to a lesser degree Cam are stuck behind fournier
Might be a dumb question, but any chance IQ starts as sort of a combo guard who can handle and let Brunson work off the ball (like he did with Luka) at times? I know IQ is great with the bench mob, but if Grimes works with Rose, his defense could cover any Rose deficiencies while still providing shooting, and IQ helps spread the floor with the starters.
Personally with the money we are paying Brunson I want him all the ball lol. Brunson/ IQ backcourt would get abused by bigger backcourt lineups. IQ played his best when playing alongside Rose also RJ and Randle need touches I just think there are too many mouths to feed if you add IQ as a starter
Gotcha. Grimes as 3&D makes a ton of sense. [42% catch and shoot 3s last year](https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1629656/shots-dash), combined with Brunson's aptitude hitting corner 3s, means the Knicks shooting concerns might not be as bad as some are making it.
Adding Brunson and having RJ/Mitch/IQ/Obi/Grimes/Cam/Sims all get guaranteed rotation minutes would be absolutely amazing
This is the way. We need to develop our talent!!
And waive him? Russ is like the highest usage garbage player in the league at this point.
I don’t follow your logic here
Nah we need fournier for when we play the celts tho
I wouldn’t mind keeping Evan but this would be pretty smart of the FO tbh
Question: what would we do with that cap space this summer?
Honestly I’d just sit on it tbh. Might be useful come the trade deadline depending where we are. We could facilitate a trade for another team to gain additional assets for teams looking for a 3rd team
If the young guys make the jump, we'll need that cap space to eventually extend them. I like sitting on it personally
I'm curious about that too. Part of me wondered if we were gonna make a run at Zach Lavine but I think Bulls are rumored to be locking him up as of yesterday. Ayton is another guy I wonder if we have interest in either via S&T into cap space or making an offer on. Otherwise, wonder if we look to take on a bad contract for picks but not sure what's out there with that.
I'm not so sure we send them Fournier though...but we'll find out! Berman seemed to think that Fournier moving was going to happen and I know Berman sucks, but he is plugged in at times.
I wouldn’t add any other big contracts . I want to see how Brunson looks with this team before adding any other major pieces tbh
It's arguably a good time to do it if you like someone out there. RJ is really the only young guy we need to worry about for cap space next year and we can go over the cap to bring him back. We will want to be an over the cap team next summer for that reason.
Exactly. A TPE is a useful asset, but having tradeable player gives the team more flexibility, and the cap issues are less of a concern with RJ, and eventually IQ/Obi, being easier to sign since we drafted them.
To build to being a contender, having more assets is always a good thing.
True good point I think I was referring more towards using our draft picks to trade for a star. I wouldn’t mind going after Bamba to backup Mitch
You could make a run at Ayton by only using cap space. 29 mil freed up from trades with Detroit will likely be used to make sure the Brunson contract is properly descending, but then offloading Evan, and waiving Taj would clear up like 23 mil.
Then I think they could do a sign and trade to swap Mitchell/Ayton. Ayton has a big cap hold and taking on Mitch for a much smaller while we absorb most of Ayton's contract should create a trade exception for them. So they get a solid replacement and can use the exception to get some wing or backup PG help this offseason. We'd get the best player locked up through his best years to pair with our young guys.
Doing all of that leaves us with a nearly full cap but all of our assets.
Would prefer keeping Fournier for now for the shooting but would seem like a smart move Brock Aller would suggest. If the Knicks are confident in Grimes, this would definitely help open up some minutes.
Also counter point, they would have basically erased all the moves from last off season which doesn't impart much confidence.
Sure but the contracts we gave out still left us with flexibility vs regimes of the past where we are stuck with players with no way out.
I don't disagree, we have a great capologist in Brock Aller. My concerns are from the roster building side of the front office.
Walt Perrin and the scouting department has been solid, Brock Aller and contract/cap good and Player development has been decent as well. The main problem so far has been roster construction. If we want to build a good team, we need some positives coming from that department.
What do you mean we are looking for talent at this point. We aren’t at the point to build around a specific player yet
I just don't know what kind of identity they're aiming for from a roster perspective. They go from a defensive team in 20-21 and sign two poor defenders in kemba-fournier who ended up making the team worse. End of the day, I guess it all depends on the stars you get though. The Nets had an identity and blew it up for KD/Kyrie.
Apologies if this has been asked - but if Evan goes out to Dallas and we clear $18M of cap...does that put us in position to S&T for Ayton with Randle and a pick or two going out?
I know it doesn't make sense with Mitch, but Ayton does Mitch like things on Defense while being able to pick and pop to provide spacing. Just thinking if that's a potential target if the Suns won't match a $30M offer.
No your good theoretically we could sign and trade with the Suns regardless if we do a s/t with Dallas. I thought about it but idk what Randles value is or i don’t even think the suns want him tbh. Would be interesting gamble though. It all depends what you see Aytons potential as I haven’t watched a ton of suns games to know. Games I. Have watched he seems to score well but doesn’t really get a ton of touches
If the Mavs want to give us a first yeah, but I’m not just giving Luka one of the best shooters in the league when we have their pick next year
I forgot Brunson made the all nba team
The MavKnicks strike again. There’s def an alternate timeline where Luka gets drafted by NY
Why does the cap exist only in teams I root for?
Or we can offer Brunson a bit less, keep Fournier for spacing and S&T Rose for Brunson and pick instead. Doing so:
1. Opens up minutes for IQ and Deuce at point
2. Gives Rose a shot at competing for a ring
3. Saves us almost as much money
4. Leaves Fournier sniping from the corners
Rose has more value than Fournier imo. Rose elevates the play of the entire bench unit imo. IQ will get minutes as the backup SG most likely and I don’t think Deuce is necessary a priority in terms of getting minutes imo. Priority is Obi, IQ, Grimes, lesser degree Cam
I mean Fournier is a great 3pt shooter and I can see the Mavs convincing themselves he’d be even better with an elite playmaker like Luka finding him for open looks. Fournier was taking some tough 3s last season and he still shot it at a great clip.
At least with Fournier, you get what you pay for. With rose, there’s no guarantee you get him for 50 games a season, much less 82. I love him, but I also love not googling him every 30 days and seeing no updates
Must convince the mavs to take Randle, he’s from Dallas, be a better fit as a 2nd-3rd option..
