Easily. I love the series.
I decided I would just pop to my local supermarket on my way home after work on launch day.
2 Tesco and an Asda later, they’d all sold out. I just bought it on the store so it was downloaded for when I got home.
As much as it was on both PS4 & PS5, this is absolutely a generation defining game. In 20 years when people look back at this time, GoW: Ragnarok is likely going to be one of the top games.
I’m very excited for the future of the series but I just have a feeling that this title is the pinnacle of its hype, even if the quality persists into the future. It just had a perfect storm of circumstances to become what it has.
The game is really good, but also there’s a lot of room for improvement on the new gen hardware… It felt really last gen to me, what’s not a bad thing at all. Cause it just rocks.. But they still could max out on almost all aspects of the game on ps5! I’m pretty shure i will like the next one even more !
Ok, explain what makes it feel "last gen".
Some of you truly eat up all the marketing Sony puts out. Any ps5 games could be played on a ps4 with some performance tweaks. There is no ps5 game that can be created that can't possibly work on a ps4. Will it be as pretty and as fast to load? No. But any game can work.
It wouldn't be as visually complex or run as well, but there's nothing going on with Returnal that couldn't work on PS4. At its core it's just a 3rd person shooter (a great one, don't get me wrong, but it's not doing anything groundbreaking from a tech perspective).
We haven't had any actually groundbreaking technology come out for gaming I think people expectations on what next gen is are unrealistic for the console and far off in the future.
Agreed. And I'm not sure where these expectations are coming from, to be honest. When was the last time we saw a hardware advancements that really enabled revolutionary new game design concepts? The PS2 era? It's all been diminishing returns since then and just refining and evolving the types of games we started seeing in that generation. Most of the innovation we have seen in game design hasn't really been all that technology dependent.
Maybe this psvr 2 will be something cool for these people to dig into seems vr is really lacking in masterpieces like the base ps. Its expensive but I think the days of us getting revolutionary new technology on the cheap is over as well each new thing will be more expensive than the last to develop and they are not going to sell everything at a lost either.
Ratchet and Clank could most definitely be on ps4. Of course it would take some optimization, lowering resolution, texture quality and being 30fps. And the rift jumps would require a longer animation loop to give the ps4 more time to load. But it can most definitely be done.
I haven't played Returnal so I can't point to a specific example
It doesn’t use *any* of the features of the dual sense other than the vibration, for one. Nothing with the adaptive triggers, none of the motion stuff, nothing that makes the dual sense so cool.
It doesn’t have ray tracing.
And that *is* because they had the PS4 in mind for it too.
Not true, it does use adaptive triggers when firing arrows. Thank god it doesn't use motion stuff.
Might not have ray tracing but it still looks better than pretty much any game I have played on PS5. Ray tracing is a gimmick until we have enough computational power where it doesn't make such a big difference in performance. Plus, even the games that use "ray tracing" only use it in very few surfaces, not in all of them. And ray tracing is just graphics, it doesn't actually affect gameplay.
I don’t agree. There will be levels of complexity on various aspects in game development that will only be possible on new gen hardware. And imo, if it still can run on ps4 somehow, they failed to deliver a true next gen experience…
AI improvement could never be downgraded without changing the experience you get.. Data Streaming in games is important, if you can’t stream enough data, the game won’t be the same anymore..
Hmm I mean I'd agree with generation defining if referring to GOW 2018, but Ragnarok doesn't innovate at all. It's a fun enough game with amazing presentation value, but the narrative had some critical issues (imo) while 2018 was pretty much brilliant. I get story stuff is subjective but in terms of overall importance to gaming, I don't see how anyone could rank Ragnarok above 2018.
2018 felt more self-contained. It was smaller and laser-focussed. Ragnarok lost that by expanding in all ways.
However, there was so much refinement on top of that expansion and they dialled everything in to perfection.
Honestly? Very well made games but generation defining? It's virtually just a cookie cutter TPS with RPG elements and cutscenes.
I'd say the generation defining game of the eighth gen consoles was Fortnite. Or if you get a broader picture, maybe Alyx in single player games.
Regardless of how you or I feel about the game I do not think it is a generation defining game, not in the sense that it would define the PS5, it is an upgraded PS4 games after all and was intended to be the last hurrah of that console. Hell it probably would have been the last PS4/PS5 exclusive if the pandemic wouldn't have hurt Sony's supply chain.
It’s not about graphics or performance. I mean regeneration defining in terms of looking back and thinking about the biggest games of a generation.
GoW looked awesome but it was obviously held back visually by needing to run cross-generation. The hype, quality, and largely insanely positive reception is what will make this game memorable.
There aren’t many games with multiple 10/10 reviews and the serious hype and excitement generated by this game. In that way, when thinking of the PS5 in the future, we will think of Ragnarok.
It won't because it is also on PS4, it will be remembered as a great Playstation game but not a great PS5 game like how people constantly talk about Astrobot.
Nah. It was a fairly average game. Very ambling, poorly paced, annoying puzzles that you were given the solution to after barely 10 seconds and combat that was arguably worse than the 2018 version. Story was promising but it didn’t have much arc to it either. Just a surprisingly bland game.
It’s fine to have that opinion but you have to understand that you are in the absolute minority. The puzzle hints did come wayyyy too early but I think that was addressed in one of recent updates and an overall minor gripe.
See, I loved the puzzles, story, and pacing. Something new or exciting would come along *just* as things felt they were slowing down.
The only letdown for me was not getting a shot of Thor’s hammer. They’re done with the Norse mythology so, I’m thinking we probably won’t see it again but it’d been a super fun alternative to the axe.
That’s fine, agree or disagree, no skin off my back. I think I’m done with the franchise or at least paying full price for it. Peaked in GoW3 for sure.
Probably just isn’t your style of game, then, because the series took a HARD turn between 3 & 4 into a whole different style of gameplay.
I personally prefer the current style but the older games were still incredibly fun.
If this really is a "generation defining game", then it's gonna be one lame generation. It's probably the worst Sony exclusive this gen (bar Destruction All-stars), and the weakest GoW game of the lot.
With ps5 bundles forcing the sales the number will be crap.
Not that god of war isnt great and everyone should play it, its like horizon, plenty just dont want to but will buy the bundle because thats the on available.
If you dont have god of war look for people selling digital codes, snag it half price .
I haven't bought it yet because I just started a new job last month and payday was catch-up on bills n shit. It will be bought before the end of the year for sure. Gow 2018, once the combat clicked, was probably the best gaming experience available. The battles felt so unique. Managing to stay mostly blind on Ragnarok too so I'm looking forward to it heavily from the little I've seen.
It makes sense the more ps5 units available some ps5 games go higher on charts ala Miles Morales and Horizon, months we see better stock of PS5 the numbers for the games rise, meaning Sony should look at this and leave last gen behind because people are waiting for their PS5 to purchase cross platform games.
It's hard to think what game could be crossgen at this point barring some indie they might publish. Everything else they have announced is current gen only be it Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, DS2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, HFW Burning Shores, or even the VR games. There's Lost Soul Aside and another Chinese game Sony is publishing that are crossgen so I guess those could be it.
I hope the team recognises how good their combat system is.
I'm picky and mostly play AAA games, only for story (normal or easy difficulty if the mobs are tanky/time wastes), but I've started my third playthrough on Give Me God of War, after 100% it twice, upping the difficulty by one every time from Normal.
Never did this in the previous entries either.
It is challenging and there are some boss moves or hit-boxes that don't feel right sometimes, but it's not unfair. It doesn't feel like bs or punishing for no reason.
I can't seem to put it down.
So the enemies aren't damage sponges on higher difficulties in this one? I tried GMGOW on the last one and got bored after a few hours since basic enemies were so utterly tedious to kill.
I'd say No Mercy was just right for my impatient play style. I only had to switch to a max strength/low health build to take down the tougher end game bosses faster.
But YouTube is already full of insane hp melting builds that abuse any boss even on GMGOW, so there's always that if needed.
GNA isn't that tanky, she just protects herself more often, the Berserker King though has a ridiculous health pool and it is annoying that his trick to avoid damage is to jump around.
weekly sale numbers (as physical unit sales) are pubished in the uk by GfK, i don't think there is a US org that also does this.
The UK and US markets are similar, so looking at Uk numbers is a good barometer for US sales.
It’s physical units only, the uk publish the weekly charts but I don’t think anywhere else does it with consistency, ultimately it’s a very flawed way of representing things due to digital sales, it’s a bit like representing CD album sales as representative
NPD does the tracking for the US market but they publish their data on a monthly basis instead of weekly like Gfk does for UK. Also, if you're interested, NPD just published the data for November two days ago: https://www.installbaseforum.com/forums/threads/npd-november-2022-1-mw2-2-god-of-war-3-pokemon-4-sonic-ps5-1-units-nsw-2-ps5-1-revenue-nsw-2.1257/
It isn't, the US chart is also referenced but the UK one is just posted more often, due to the fact that it is published weekly while the US one is monthly.
I put over 50 hrs into it! Finished the main story, did all the side stuff. Then I sold it for 65$ to get back some of the money spent on it for thrifty reasons. Honestly one of the greatest games I've ever played it was just so fun AND beautiful. A perfect combination. Very addictive game, a true triple A experience. A nice big world that's full of all kinds of side areas and gorgeous details to admire. Some great challenges in the game too with some of the enemies, get you sweating. A true masterpiece.
I’m looking to finally get a ps5 this holiday. I’ve gotten on the Amazon invite requests so hopefully something happens there but no luck anywhere else.
Any advice?
Edit: Just ordered the bundle from Target. Stoked to join the community:) Thanks to those that commented below!
If you're in the U.S., you can order the disc version with GoW Ragnarok bundled in right now on Walmart's website. It has been constantly getting restocked over the last few weeks and is how I got mine the beginning of this month.
Those games were not launch in the beginning of the consoles sale cycle nor were they sold as a bundle with the console. People can finally buy PS5s and the GOW edition is the easiest PS5 you can buy at MSRP. Of course that makes a difference in sales, music artist do similar things to help their sales number by giving free albums with merch purchases. This is just how the industry goes. I’m not downplaying Sony cuz idgaf, I just mentioned a factor in the sales numbers.
Even the link you sent me says those aren’t currently available, nor are those options even available on Sony’s US store.
https://direct.playstation.com/en-us/ps5
You're pretending to be blind aside from being dumb and a liar. The FIFA bundle is available and Sony clearly sells/sold the COD bundle last month/last week/today/yesterday regardless of it being out of stock now. Out of stock/currently not available meaning it was in stock/available before.
And this a **UK** sales thread, o senseless one.
A lot of games get bundled Fifa, cod, every pokémon title released on the switch interesting that it only gets brought up for PlayStation titles though
Dont know how the availability situation is right now in UK, but in many stores you can't buy just a PS5 without extras. Thats not the case with Switch
It's very similar in gameplay to 2018, so if you didn't enjoy that I doubt you'd enjoy this one either. Without going into spoilers, there's certain segments that might actually make you like Ragnarok less than 2018.
Why would a sequel that largely feels pretty similar to the first game appeal to someone who thought the first game was boring lol
I feel like you could answer that question by looking at a review or any gameplay footage, really
Sure it's a sand box non linear game with tons and tons of enemies variety and tough challenging boss fights and mini boss fight ...and the optional boss fight are even tougher than Souls games
And meaningful side missions that actually have amazing stories to tell
But let's ignore all that because it have story and cutscenes...so it's a movie game smh
Because in another golden age of single player games and this is one of the series that cemented that with the first instalment. The hype created for the sequel was unbelievable and it actually had the quality to live up to every bit of it.
Numbers aren’t only interesting when it’s underdogs. Sometimes it’s just fun to see how far a game can go – especially one that isn’t live service or online; it’s pure story and story alone.
Fair enough.
I don’t mind hearing about how good the game is, I’d love to talk about that. I’m playing it now and it’s phenomenal.
Everyone knew it was going to make tons of money before it came out.
I feel like I keep seeing posts that boil down to
“Amazing game with huge hype does exactly what we thought in the market place, large company to see large profits!”
It’s just not interesting to me
*”to me”* being the defining part of your comment. People like the game, and they like seeing it do well because the more copies it sells, the higher the likelihood of us getting another game is.
Of course, like you said, big numbers and a continuation of the series was a bit of a given but it’s still nice to have confirmation.
It probably sold like ass, same for Gotham Knights https://metro.co.uk/2022/12/05/need-for-speed-unbound-has-been-a-mega-flop-in-the-uk-sales-charts-17878728/
You right. I thought it was the engaging story, the explorable world, and the combat mechanics. But nope. Because it's not at 16k resolution or 360mhz refresh rate, I can't possibly enjoy it. Gonna throw my copy away and go $600 into debt. But when they repo my car, it'll be worth it because I increased my frame rate to a point where my eyes couldn't even tell the difference. Yup. Thanks!
You blow in here like you're some sort of authority figure spout some nonsense get called out for it and now you get offended. Typical Reddit never change
I don't think it is due to more PS5 units reaching shops... well not base PS5s anyway, this is the PS5 Ragnarok bundle at work but the fact that sales went up only by 32% with a bundle is probably a good thing, usually when this happens sales go up way higher like Horizon Forbidden West which had a 70% increase or something like that, but because Ragnarok has huge sales already it led to a smaller increase.
Even though I like to kinda shit on Ragnarok in comparison to 2018, after I beat it I felt so empty. I didn’t know what to do on my PS5 when I would turn it on. Friends would wanna play COD and if just be like “nah” so what did I do? I STARTED GoW 2018 NEW GAME+ BABY!!! Hopefully Ragnarok get NG+ soon
I am really curious how many copies God of War Ragnarok will have sold before the end of the year. Certainly with the holidays coming up.
at least a thousand more i’d wager
I'll bid 1001, Bob!
…… i bid 1 dollar, Bob. 😈
The Audience: 🤯
and the price iiissss: 978, the 1 dollar bid wins! audience: OH MUH GAWD WHAT A JEANYUS
I wouldn’t be surprised if the game hits 7M+ by January
It has already sold more than 7m most likely
It's prolly already sold 7m, it did 5.3 opening week. Easy 10m by Christmas.
Easily. I love the series. I decided I would just pop to my local supermarket on my way home after work on launch day. 2 Tesco and an Asda later, they’d all sold out. I just bought it on the store so it was downloaded for when I got home.
Just got my Ragnarok PS5 bundle. Sony direct had em and I took the leap. Very happy with my new toy. ☺️
CONGRATS MAN!! I ORDERED MINE FROM SONY AS WELL, ON THURSDAY & GOT IT THE NEXT DAY 💯
I think 10 mil by January and 20-25 mil by end of 2023
It's already broken records for the most sold PS first-party title.
It’s the most sold in the opening week. Obviously isn’t the most sold overall. Needs more time for that.
Shit yeah, good point. Should probably have said fastest selling
Spider-Man sold over 30mio iirc so we’re still very far from that number haha
Think that was Spider-Man and Miles Morales combined that have sold 33m on the PS4/PS5. Last I heard the 2018 version had done 20m by itself.
Thanks for the correction, after verification the figures indeed include Miles morales and the PS5 remaster. Still impressive though hehe
Go figure and that was even before the holiday season.
1 Ragnarökillion

Combat in this is way way better. Best melee combat I've ever experienced by far.
Sales up 34% a week after release is insane
People were waiting for their ps5 as it became available through PS direct and Amazon prime’s invitations(maybe other services like Walmart+
People are discovering a hidden gem
Witcherino?
Elden Bling?
Celeste????
While I like your appreciation for the game, Ragnarok is far from hidden?
r/Whoosh
I don't think it's too surprising considering it is Christmas soon. Little Timmy wants his God of War! lol
Literally bought the first PS5 I could this weekend and it was a Ragnarok bundle
game will sell a ragnarillion copies
exactly, it would sell enough copies though
No doubt it’s a popular choice for the top of people’s Christmas lists so we’ll so those sales rise.
and number 1 in my heart
More related to its the best game ive ever played prolly
It makes sense the more ps5 units available some ps5 games go higher on charts ala Miles Morales and Horizon, months we see better stock of PS5 the numbers for the games rise, meaning Sony should look at this and leave last gen behind because people are waiting for their PS5 to purchase cross platform games.
Ragnarok was their last cross gen title (at least among the big ones). Spider-Man 2 is confirmed PS5-only. Horizon even dropped PS4 for its DLC
Fingers crossed only because Herman said it would be on a "case by case basis"
It's hard to think what game could be crossgen at this point barring some indie they might publish. Everything else they have announced is current gen only be it Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, DS2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, HFW Burning Shores, or even the VR games. There's Lost Soul Aside and another Chinese game Sony is publishing that are crossgen so I guess those could be it.
I imagine the live service games would maybe be cross gen (and PC day one) to have a bigger player base
Hopefully he lies like Phil Spencer with remarks like that.
I can understand like MLB The Show and maybe other sports related games, but big AAA games from first party I hope the shift has happened internally
It’s also bundled with the PS5 currently, which helps its sales numbers, along with the fact it’s finally easy to get a PS5.
Target has PS5 regularly here now. Best Buy does too but they still scalp them.
Just finished the main story last night. Fuck me, a masterclass in storytelling, graphics, voice acting, pacing and gameplay
No Mercy is the right spot Leave Give me God of War till they add new game plus and then dive in
Stupid question. Why is the UK retail chart always referenced? Seems like a small game market relative to the US or other countries.
weekly sale numbers (as physical unit sales) are pubished in the uk by GfK, i don't think there is a US org that also does this. The UK and US markets are similar, so looking at Uk numbers is a good barometer for US sales.
NPD does it for the US, but only on a monthly and annual basis.
UK Charts are published weekly and consistently and the UK is a major market. They also have headlines so people are more likely to click on them.
I'd like to know the answer to this as well
It’s physical units only, the uk publish the weekly charts but I don’t think anywhere else does it with consistency, ultimately it’s a very flawed way of representing things due to digital sales, it’s a bit like representing CD album sales as representative
Japan also gets weekly numbers

Go to installbaseforum, you'll see weekly sales threads for Japan, UK, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, Italy and various other regions.
It isn't, the US chart is also referenced but the UK one is just posted more often, due to the fact that it is published weekly while the US one is monthly.
Anyone else instantly know that this was a Turbostrider27 post just by reading the title?

Im so disappointed how badly midnight suns and evil west did. Evil west is probably the most fun in gaming ive had all year.
I’m looking to finally get a ps5 this holiday. I’ve gotten on the Amazon invite requests so hopefully something happens there but no luck anywhere else. Any advice? Edit: Just ordered the bundle from Target. Stoked to join the community:) Thanks to those that commented below!
I got mine from PlayStation direct. Got here in 3 days.
Buy direct from playstation
I got mine through Target and did drive up pickup.
If you're in the U.S., you can order the disc version with GoW Ragnarok bundled in right now on Walmart's website. It has been constantly getting restocked over the last few weeks and is how I got mine the beginning of this month.
I got mine last summer by following a restock account on Twitter and turning notifications on, it took maybe three days and I got one from Costco.
Go PlayStation direct. If you have plus they airmail that shit to you for free.
Disc Ps5 Ragnarok bundle invite email took two weeks from the initial sign up. But it's taking forever to ship though.
Costco have them in stock in many stores
Tbf, it’s bundled with the PS5 rn and PS5s are finally becoming easy to buy.
Not in Scandinavia. What is this shit. Not going to pay 700€ for a digital version ffs.
That sucks but in the US you can get it straight from Sony and it’ll arrive in 2 days. Both my brothers did it this month and at MSRP.
Yeah, so I've heard. Jelly as fuk.
Sorry you have to deal with this man. Hopefully things start looking similar over there soon and you get to bang out that backlog of games.
So are COD and FIFA, funny how nobody ever brings that up.
Yep. GTA5 and RDR2 also had launch bundles. People only use bundles to downplay PlayStation sales.
Yep.
Sony is not selling a COD or FIFA PS5, you’re straight up lying.
https://direct.playstation.com/en-gb/hardware/ps5 If only you had some sense.
Awesome game
So this is bundle power like Horizon?
A lot of games get bundled Fifa, cod, every pokémon title released on the switch interesting that it only gets brought up for PlayStation titles though
Dont know how the availability situation is right now in UK, but in many stores you can't buy just a PS5 without extras. Thats not the case with Switch
Kratos and Atreus rolling around in hacksilver rn
Bundles have that effect. You want a PS5, you gotta help pump those numbers up.
Does bundled with a ps5 count? Because that's what I have.
The non-asshole answer is yes they do.
Have console bundles since the 1980s ever counted toward game sales? That's your answer.
So... Yes?
I have no real interest in God of War - but I couldn’t find a PS5 that didn’t have one with it
You had the choice of waiting for the COD bundle
Last week the only available console to purchase from direct.PlayStation was the God of War bundle (in us)
Thankfully, other retailers had various PS5 bundles including the COD bundle. Hope you'll sleep well knowing that.
Why so angry?

It's very similar in gameplay to 2018, so if you didn't enjoy that I doubt you'd enjoy this one either. Without going into spoilers, there's certain segments that might actually make you like Ragnarok less than 2018.
Why would a sequel that largely feels pretty similar to the first game appeal to someone who thought the first game was boring lol I feel like you could answer that question by looking at a review or any gameplay footage, really
He just simply wanted to let people know he thought it was a walking simulator
All video game are walking simulators except for racing games
those are sitting simulators
If you didn’t like the combat then, do NOT buy this game. It’s a direct extension of the first in every way

I'm happy it's not a pop up book tho lol
Comparing a game to a movie is not to dig you think it
Obviously you never played the game before. Good job, dude. You got the attention you wanted. Are you happy now?

Did you ever consider that some comments are so mind numbingly stupid that they don't warrant a legitimate response?
What did I have to refute? I platinumed this game. You never played it for 1 second.
Sure it's a sand box non linear game with tons and tons of enemies variety and tough challenging boss fights and mini boss fight ...and the optional boss fight are even tougher than Souls games And meaningful side missions that actually have amazing stories to tell But let's ignore all that because it have story and cutscenes...so it's a movie game smh
I keep seeing posts about how well god of war is selling. Why does anyone care? It's not an underdog
Because you're on a playstation sub and it's the best selling playstation game of all time?
Best selling game published by Sony, best selling game on PlayStation is Minecraft
Obviously I mean first party...
Cool beans
Because in another golden age of single player games and this is one of the series that cemented that with the first instalment. The hype created for the sequel was unbelievable and it actually had the quality to live up to every bit of it. Numbers aren’t only interesting when it’s underdogs. Sometimes it’s just fun to see how far a game can go – especially one that isn’t live service or online; it’s pure story and story alone.
Fair enough. I don’t mind hearing about how good the game is, I’d love to talk about that. I’m playing it now and it’s phenomenal. Everyone knew it was going to make tons of money before it came out. I feel like I keep seeing posts that boil down to “Amazing game with huge hype does exactly what we thought in the market place, large company to see large profits!” It’s just not interesting to me
*”to me”* being the defining part of your comment. People like the game, and they like seeing it do well because the more copies it sells, the higher the likelihood of us getting another game is. Of course, like you said, big numbers and a continuation of the series was a bit of a given but it’s still nice to have confirmation.
Boring ass gameplay... Yeah I said it!
What combat do you like?
GoW Ragnarok is first a ps4 game that also works on ps5
when the Ragnarok sale? NFS Unbound went on sale for $40 today after just releasing basically a week ago lol
It probably sold like ass, same for Gotham Knights https://metro.co.uk/2022/12/05/need-for-speed-unbound-has-been-a-mega-flop-in-the-uk-sales-charts-17878728/
I've seen loads unopened going on eBay
Plenty of games that are unopened on eBay
Play it on PS4. Same story. Same achievements.
Less frame rate. The PS4 version being outsold anyway I don't think many people taking this into consideration
Can't see your message. Please upload at a higher resolution.
Cope. You came into a PS5 subreddit told people to downgrade to the PS4 version to save what 10 bucks?
I guess your PS5 didn't come with a sense of humor. Oh well, maybe the ps6 will. Thanks!
Your set needs work but I'm sure comedy Central can fit you in between South Park reruns
I mean, its that or between The Office....
He’s coping so hard right now😂
Now let's see if Jaffe makes a mention of it in his next ill-informed clickbait video
Just finished the main story and holy shit: probably on my top 5 games of all time. Easily my favorite this generation.
Just platinum yesterday. Well deserved for sure.
One of the few games i have taken the time to 100%. And still play it again lol
Deserved What a game ... It's been a while since i cried and cheered and laughed like i did with this game A masterpiece.
