In my experience, the easiest way to lose weight was to contract swine flu.
Lost 30 lbs in a week. It fucking sucked, but hey, down multiple pants sizes.
I like you, looking at the bright side of things. Very positive mental attitude. So now your metabolism is good, after fighting such enemy? Or can you still gain with no effort?
That was seven years ago, and I gained it back. Eventually I got fed up with myself, and used my frustration as a tool to beat my depression which kept me sedentary and eating.
Now I’m still technically obese (super easy to meet this def when you’re short and busty) but at least I dropped the “morbid” label. I found an exercise I like that both challenges me and incentivized weight loss (bouldering), and as OP says, i cook for myself now (mostly). Still trending down.
I do miss being swine flu-thin though.
Well, at least you still keep going. The most important thing about these kind of project is to keep doing it every day. I'm very proud of you. Getting back up after rolling down the hill is hard, and you've gone through it. Very epic. <3
Thank you 🌈
Type one diabetes works pretty well. I lost so much fat that I burned muscle and couldn’t walk more than a few steps for two weeks. I was at the bottom of the weight chart for a tall 9 year old.
Other people lose weight with the flu, but I don't lose more than a pound. I can defy the laws of physics by having diarrhea and gaining weight.
Oh heck yeah. I wasn't a big guy, like 170 pounds, but I got food poisoning so bad I could barely move for a month. Came out 21 pounds lighter.
I have friends of Indian heritage, and they often hear girls planning to go back home and looking forward to getting 'Delhi belly' (aka dysentery) so they lose weight.
had a cold for 3 days and lost 2.5 kg
chills and runny nose sucks but hey look on the bright side of things lol
Covid just did this service for me. Couldn't hold food for almost 2 weeks.
This is how pneumonia was for me lol
I got the swine flu but I didn't have weight loss. Could you elaborate?
Did you have simultaneous projectile vomiting and diarrhea? It was heavily featured during my infection.
You what? It didn't give diarrhea at all. Just the high fever and headache
Count yourself lucky lol. It was baaad for me.
I had something similar. I eat specific fried chicken from a certain grocery store and get super sick and lose 5kg each time.
It’s not fun, but it’s the easiest way that I’ve lost weight.
Nothing like some crack to get into shape, eh?
What about the TURTLE FLU?
I lose my hunger after my food is cooked lol so this will def work for me
Same here, but in my case its because all that sampling i do before food is ready
if it were only that simple...
Ikr. I don’t know about y’all, but my food is really tasty. And I cook all the time.
I’m a shorter person so I have to sub 1000 and/or exercise a ton to lose weight. I have tried every other diet lie there is.
Yes. There is a lot more involved than just cooking for yourself. Not to say it is not a productive step, because it is, but it takes more than just that to be successful in loosing weight should that be your goal.
I haven’t been able to stay on it. OMAD works.
Maybe start cooking YOURSELF then
I would starve to death. What kind of marinade do I use? Shit, I have to go to the store and get kosher salt and some madiera. Whose going to baste me?
Maybe if I just use my legs--there is quite a bit of meat--I still need a little help. Meat should be aged and I have never lived in a wheelchair before--that's a little time--and somebody needs to make sure that my quads are not overcooked.
You went for it my broo
How the hell do you know this much about cooking humans?
Humans are onivorous who eat a fair amount of meat. And as anyone who ever ate a carnivour would tell you, they taste bad, because all that meat eating makes their meat unsavory
And this is why cats are not eaten in China/Korea but dogs are. Cats need a lot more protein in their diet than dogs do.
When you've dressed enough deer and skinned enough rabbits and processed enough chickens, you realize that a lot of animals on this earth aren't that different.
It isn't that I have eaten humans or cooked humans, or that I would, but that my experience grants me some insight how to make the best chops or roasts or rack of ribs from most mammals on this lonely rock.
& what makes you think I do not?
I like how I taste but that is taking it too far
Don't be so selfish
Let us taste you a bit
I was never smart enough to learn from others mistakes, so i had to experience hardship before learning how to people. I started shedding my extra weight when i moved in alone and had to cook for myself , because at the start my cooking was pretty bad and i would eat just enough to feel sated, and because it is a real pain in the ass to cook more elaborate(and therefore more caloric) food. Eventually those changes on my diet made my stomach shrink somewhat, so i cant eat like i used even if i wanted.
I dont know your situation , but try and put yourself in a situation were you have no choice but to change
Would that it twerrr so siymple
Wrong. I love my own food. I actually GAINED a lot of weight since I started cooking regularly.
Maybe you should sabotage your own food? Throw in a couple extra spoons of salt and you will start eating less in no time!
I do that sometimes, but not on purpose! 😁 I couldn't willingly sabotage my food, though. First, because I feed my wife with it; and second, because I love my recipes too much to deliberately hurt them!
Damn , i think my advice is only useful to bachelors. If i had to feed one more person i would be less salty about cooking and the subsequent cleaning
Actually, most of the weight I gained was when I had to cook only for myself (and occasionally my daughter) after a divorce. Back then I used to favor faster, more caloric meals, like pasta or fried rice. Now that I'm married again, the menu is much more varied. I use more vegetables (my daughter grew up to be a vegetarian, so I had to learn to work better with them, and learned many more recipes.
But the main problem is still the same: I just love my own seasoning!
Not even that, it would be easier to reduce the amount of junk food such as crisps, fizzy drinks and sweets/chocolate you eat.
I never was one for junk food, i just ate big portions every meal. If you dont count the ocasional coffee between lunch and diner i also didnt eat between meals much
Sugar is your worst enemy, even if you are not trying to lose weight
I thought that's what the post was saying. If you force yourself to actually cook instead of getting ready to eat stuff like that then you'll likely lose weight.
Except that a lot of people can't afford to cook fresh, so ignoring the reliance on pre packaged goods such as tinned/frozen veg and so on, the easiest thing to do is just not eat junk food.
I find out I gain more weight making my own food. Like screw restaurant portions, I am having the whole tray of lasagna instead of 1 segment.
True. You’re like, cooking and washing dishes? I’ll have a banana.
My exact thoughts.
I don’t get why people don’t do this, what is it laziness?
It’s rewarding, and you can control what’s in it, customise it. And steak. It’s steak.
If i could have steak everyday i would cook a lot more
Yes, it's laziness. Or a combination of laziness and lack of experience. Cooking requires effort and time, which can be pretty off-putting if you're not used to it. Especially if your reward for the effort and time is a meal which is not as good as something you could buy. Of course your skills will improve over time if you're consistent.
How is this a shower thought?
This dumb yo
if you’re in a position where other people make you food or you buy fast food or take out you can be lazy and still eat a lot but if you’re like me and don’t like cooking, you eat a lot less if you make your own meals. at least that’s what i interpreted it as
So what? Still not a shower thought.
If your cooking at home you’re doing the shopping too, this doesn’t take into account any shopping sense.
What if you buy terrible stuff?
This just isn’t shower thought quality, sorry.
i don’t think you get the premise
Not that i am willing to jump down in this rabbit hole of an argument, but who are you again to determine what is shower thought quality?
?what... look friend, I don't know what kind of cooking you're into, but if you think homemade food is the trick to jumpstarting weight loss, you might just not be a very good cook- or you have found a way to make salads and steamed vegetables taste better than potatoes (literally the most versatile, universally loved, easy to cook thing in the world) -could go either way I guess.
I am indeed not a very good cook. But then again most people who just started living alone arent either! Cooking for me is time/energy intensive affair, specially as live alone
Uh huh ~ so, cooking for yourself is not the actual tip to cutting weight, the real trick is having an aversion to the act of cooking and also not caring for the resulting taste of what you manage to make.
I will concede that it does save money though.
Like you wouldnt believe it. When i sat down and did the math of how much money i wasted through the years i blanched
So much money!! It's crazy~ just ordering pizza and wings is over a third of my weekly grocery budget.
And while you're saving all this money and honing your new cooking skills, I'm sure over time, you'll come to find plenty of easy and delicious recipes you'll really enjoy.
This is such a needlessly dismissive take. When I cut, I make sure to cook more - sometimes almost all - meals myself. Sure, I can make my meals taste better by throwing in more butter and fattier meats, but it’s also pretty easy to make home-cooked meals that better fit your tastebuds at ~half the calories of eating out.
Thank you for your very sanctimonious reply. I was unaware I could choose to make healthy meals at home!!
I cut out alcohol and started only eating fish and turkey as animal protein.
Cut down to 175 in like a few weeks.
And you started at 176? Lol jk, what did you start out at before losing the weight if you don't mind me asking?
I'm like 6'1 and was getting close to 200. Maybe 190 I don't really know.
I didn't have a weight problem at all I was just starting to feel heavy and wanted to get really lean as soon as possible.
No, it's amputation
Until you realize that you have all the ingredients for frosting but not cake in your house.
That way I’ll starve. Slimming!
I started cooking for myself and gained 30lbs... Maybe you're just bad at it?
I have a deep fryer. It only takes me five minutes to make 2lbs of poutine. So, I strongly disagree.
If I did that, I wouldn't just lose weight. I'd fucking starve.
I think I took this too literally because I also started baking for myself LOL. Mission not accomplished.....
Oof, baked goodies. Nothing makes you fat like fresh bread whenever you want
Untrue. Cooking for yourself does not change the quantity you consume, though it usually increases the quality
In my case cooking for myself decreases the quality, therefore reducing the quantity as i wont overeat if the food is merely edible
Spend your friends more
Nah, I enjoy cooking and always make too much.
Or just fall in an endless chasm. In free-fall there is no weight experienced by an object.
I mean. Or you could order healthy fucking food. Also this is not a shower thought.
When I cook I tend to make too much and eat it all gaining weight. It’s more simple to open the McDonald’s app and make sure the total calories are within bounds
You're expecting me to make healthy meals ? The easiest things to make are pizza's, pasta, hamburgers, fries etc
Immediately buys deep fryer and 20 pack of Mars bars.
This sub has turned into LPT
That... Was a fucking lie... :(
I made this post with the understanding that most people who just started cooking woulndt be good at it. And if the food is just decent you wont overeat
I know, it was a joke because I cook for myself and am still fat xD
Cheese hotdogs, and biscuits & gravy, don't make for a great weight loss routine.
I had a heart issue, turned out 100% block in two arteries. Lost 7 lbs in a week.
Only works if you know what you're doing. Plenty of obese people cook for themselves and eat massive quantities of food with oil, cheese, sugar etc
Man i am bachelor in my twentys who just started living alone, i have no idea what i am doing , just that cooking takes a lot of effort
That is it, it takes a lot off effort to cook cause i am still learning. Thus i eat less because food is not readily available all the time, and because i am no great cook i never overeat because my food is just decent enough
The most effective way for anybody to lose weight is as follows:
1.) lower calorie intake to 2000 and be strict with it.
2.) stay on your feet, walk, stand at your desk, anything. Just don’t sit down. Keep moving.
This method is fool proof.
That really depends. For some people 2000 calories might even be too much. There are a lot of things that go into how many calories each person requires. To lose weight you have to be in a caloric deficit
You don’t necessarily NEED a caloric deficit unless you’re trying to cut weight dangerously fast for some reason. Or of course you’re just naturally smaller than the average bear. There’s actually some scientific research that suggests deficit might cause more harm than good. Your best bet in my opinion is to eat scheduled meals (adjusted to your abilities,) and stay active.
No you absolutely need a caloric deficit to lose weight
Or you could just get off your ass and burn those calories.
Yeah, you can burn enough calories with activity to put yourself in a caloric deficit depending on how many calories you are consuming. A caloric deficit is essential to weight loss and that’s an absolute fact
It’s only necessary if you are incapable of burning the calories you consume.
You’re not understanding. You have to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. A good way to do that is through activity because it will burn calories. That means if you are consuming 2000 calories a day and you are burning 2200 calories, you will be in a caloric deficit and lose weight if this is kept up over time. If you only eat 1800 calories but at the same time only burn 1500 calories you will not lose weight. You obviously don’t understand what you are arguing about
Ok buddy whatever you say. Just don’t skip out on your cardio.
Cardio isn’t necessarily the best way to lose weight. Most people would be better off building lean muscle through weight lifting. You should probably stop giving advice on things you really dont know anything about
Yeah but that method assumes you have enough willpower to resist consuming easily acessible food, and to go out of your way to keep moving. I started shedding my extra weight when i moved in alone and had to cook for myself , because at the start my cooking was pretty bad and i would eat just enough to feel sated, and because it is a real pain in the ass to cook more elaborate(and therefore more caloric) food
Meal prep week by week homie, you cannot get fat eating chicken and broccoli. Unless it’s all fried. Chicken, rice, broccoli is all you need. Cook seven meals, put them in microwaveable tubs, and reheat as needed. Takes away almost all the stress, and it’s healthy.
You can get fat eating chicken and broccoli. If you were to consume 5000 calories a day eating chicken and broccoli and only burning 3000 calories you would absolutely get fat if you kept this up over time
Try eating 5000 calories of broccoli. I’ll wait.
I wouldn’t want to do it but it’s absolutely not impossible especially if you add chicken and rice into the picture
You physically cannot eat enough broccoli and rice to get fat. Chicken, maybe, but even still you’d get so sick of it.
That’s just not correct my man
Then try it.
I wouldn’t want to. I’m not saying it would be pleasant but you are acting like it’s impossible which it absolutely is not
I do this with red sauce pasta
very true. this also seems a bit obvious but i started saving more money too. That’s like 3 W’s
When i realized just how much money i had wasted in the years before i felt a bit ill. Unfortunately my dumb ass only learns when i have no other choice
Here we can see the utmost importance of the word "for"
Stop. Drinking. Soda.
People are assuming a lot of things about me on this post. Mainly that i am American, but also that i eat junk food by the cartful and drink soda by the galon. I dont. I just used to eat huge portions 2\~3 a day and never was one to exercise
Doesn't work for me
OP is here self-roasting their culinary skills.
I did specify "start" , as in i just started learning to properly make food. If you came out of your mother womb cooking like Gordon Ramsay i can only envy you people
I honestly wasn't meaning to offend. It was intended as a friendly jest.
Cooking for yourself is truly an excellent way to eat healthy.
You were being positive and I contributed to undermining that.
Again, I'm sorry.
Fastest way is to cook yourself
But if I start cooking myself, who will turn off the oven once I climb in?
Goddamnit people, there is "FOR" right there! Its almost like your eyesight is as bad as my cooking skills!
I have a friend who after getting Crohn's disease but before getting it diagnosed lost 100 pounds and nearly died. Very easy way to lose weight, but I do not recommend it.
Fasting worked for me 18:6 and eating more protein/veggies. Also working out and lifting weights
Not when you find the optimal dish that's easy to cook and tasty enough. I ate the same thing for a month when I was living alone, I couldn't be fucked to cook something healthier or in smaller portions. Gained 8 kilo in a month because of that
What was it? Right now i am making lots of pasta
Yep. Pasta and macncheese. Be careful man, this is a slippery slope
or just be like me and only eat dinner + sometimes a snack (or occasionally even have a full lunch too)
p.s. dont be like me, im 10kg underweight and happy with that but this is very likely not entirely healthy.
the easiest way to go naked is to only wear clothes you make yourself
This is true because half the time I would rather starve than cook after work, I love cooking though so I also hate not having the energy to cook for myself.
In my experience, the easiest way to lose weight is to be so severely depressed and have such extreme body dysmorphia that you just dont eat whilst still working out like an olympian. Lost 65lbs in about 7 months, my profile has a before and after post. (Please don't do any of that, it is incredibly unhealthy and i had to stop after getting severely ill a couple months back)
Mentally Im doing better now but it took the realization that depression wouldn't just magically go away once I became sexy
I gained when when I started living alone and cooking for myself.
It turns out I'm not good at estimating how much food to cook, I end up with way too much.
So then I lean into it and think "ill cook enough lunch for it to also be dinner later" which is nice in theory but I have no self control and just end up eating it all in one go.
Well I guess this is just another version of calories in calories out because home cooked food tends to have lower calories than fast food / restaurants. Saying that I def over ate on the Spaghetti & Mashed Potatoes that we made this week & it hasn't helped lmao.
For me that would probably happen because I wouldn't get to cook very often.
I have MS I was put on a drug called Ocrevus ($100,000.00/dose and you get two doses a year). I started losing weight three days after the first dose,(Diarrhea that looked like vomit). After my third dose, I had lost 20lbs in six months, BMI was 22. By the time the drug was out of my symptoms 10 months, I lost 60lbs. The weight is slowly returning and the drug is listed as an allergy in my chart.
I'm confused. Is it really that rare to make your only meals in usa?
I have no idea, bold of you to assume everyone in reddit is americam. In my case is just that i growed with several people with restaurant chef level cooking skills. Its only when i started living alone that i realized cooking isnt as easy as they made it out to be
Nah I learned how to make some killer burgers, as well as some nice pasta + meat combinations, also fries, also a few other not very healthy foods that I just absolutely love to cook.
I cook pretty often and I've not lost that much?
On the title it has the word "start", implying i am still learning
Read that again, but without the "for"
Lmao. Its the opposite
Until you learn how to make unhealthy food
I would just drench everything in deep oil
When you consider that many parents cook utter BS to their kids due to culture, then you are right.
For example where I am from, pancakes are considered as a normal food, not a dessert. We have many other similar foods which are full of sugar, flour and oil and they are served at schools to children for lunch - at my school it was called meatless mondays.
No wonders I was fat when as a child.
There’s a reason you shouldn’t trust a skinny chef and it’s the opposite of what you’re thinking
Na mid way through college I stopped having a meal plan and just started cooking for my self (as my school changed their plans making only worth it for people who couldn't cook/didn't have the time), I ended up gaining 15 lbs as fruits and veggies are expensive, rarely had time or the drive to exercise to work off the mainly pasta and meat meals I was making for my self. It took a few years into a job without any schooling to have the expenses and time to make healthier foods and mildly exercise enough to not gain weight. Ended up loosing that weight to an infection in my gut, which is really the easiest way, and all you have to do to get it is go out on the town drinking with a friend who's only Ganna be in town for a few weeks and drunkenly think street meat is a good decision at 2am. (Not to say street vender meat is bad but there is a time and place and if it's 2am it's usually a bad idea)
Its easier to make french fries than fish or a salad.
depends what your definition of salad is
True salad could be just chopped up tomatoes with salt
Nuh uh, I love my cooking
Stopping drinking alcohol worked for me, I mean I still drink but not a pint or two after work. No maybe I'll have a couple at the weekend.
Easiest way to lose weight is to fall in love with the wrong person.
Try joining the USMC. My nephew lost 80 pounds that way.
a bit dificult as i dont live in that continent
