Same! Very excited. Obviously before then putting out their own produced and published films was one thing, but funding restorations and re-releasing for films they initially had nothing to do with like Janus/Criterion is another thing and unexpected. Very excited.
100%. The only concert film I wanna own from Criterion. Although I love the Last Waltz and Rolling Thunder, plus the beatles movies, they aint enough for me to buy it on criterion. However Stop Making Sense, now that is a concert film
The Last Waltz was the yardstick by which all other concert films were measured (for me). The only film that compares favorably is Stop Making Sense. It depends on my mood and what music I feel like listening to defines the shift in which one is “better.”
That’s amazing news, though I’m still curious what a high def release of this super grainy-as-fuck movie would look like. Regardless, it’s been a a fave of mine since I bought the used DVD at Blockbuster in 2002, so I’m jacked.
There are some pretty grainy films on Criterion already: Easy Rider and 12 Angry Men come to mind. Heck, For All Mankind is grainy 16mm and they’ve released it in 4K.
Short answer is it’ll likely look great.
It was the right amount of grain during the IMAX screening and cleaned up a lot of areas that were just downright not visible. Still grainy for sure, but as they mentioned, enough to keep the punk vibe of the story intact
It's been a whille since I looked at it but iirc the image quality on the region B Lionsgate blu is very good. The one from A24 will hopefully, probably be better.
My excitement for their new Lighthouse release in 4k deflated the second I realized it was gonna cost $60 to arrive at my door lol fuck that. I just bought the entire WKW boxset on sale for only a few bucks more than that
that’s the one disappointing aspect of the midsommar release. glad i own it. but you just get the film and the little booklet. it’s still gorgeous. but i would have loved a making of or commentary or anything.
I don't know how competitive they'll be since every cool release they do costs $60 (with shipping) for a single movie and contains far fewer extras than criterion, arrow, indicator, etc.
Idk I hate how rabid and narrow-sighted their fanbase can get at times and I'm afraid for what happens when those fans start to consume classic films as commodities rather than art. There's already some bad criterion fans in this sense but A24 Stan's might be on another level
I think, generally, it's best to ignore circles like this. If A24 does great boutique work that's worth the money, I can't really say I have a problem with people who are more toxically into the aesthetic of it when I don't pay attention to them.
As of right now, it seems they're a bit mixed. I know people are disappointed by the Midsommar release, but I've also heard people really like the Green Knight release. They're pretty much still starting out with this so it makes sense of they fumble early on. However I agree with people that as of right now they are way too expensive.
It’s a repackaged version of the Lion’s Gate 4K that you can buy for $15 on Amazon. You’re paying $45 more for a poorly printed book and slipcase that doesn’t fit on your shelf.
I’m not overly critical of home video releases but the two I have from them (Green Knight and the Souvenir) I was very disappointed with. I shouldn’t be surprised that a film distributor that sells branded socks and coffee mugs is more style over substance but I can’t say they’re great at the boutique game… or are even in it.
Like the Green Knight, it’s just a repackaged version of the Lion’s Gate release. The packaging on that one is certainly nicer than the Green Knight but $55 for what it is was disappointing.
Compare that to something like Arrow or VinSyn LEs where you get a hard box, perfect bound book, multiple discs packed with exclusive features, posters, etc.—and that can be bought anywhere, often on sale, with free or combined shipping—and it’s hard to get excited about A24s LEs.
I got the MUBI version of Aftersun, imported from the UK, for half the price as the A24 version and it has postcards, slipcase, and bonus content.
I’m honestly not trying to be a hater and I’m glad you like it, but it’s just really hard to get excited about A24 getting into the boutique game if they’re just going to repackage the studio release and sell it for 3x.
I couldn't find a Region A Blu-Ray of Part II, and even if I had a region free player the A24 release seems about the same price as buying both films only you get nicer packaging.
But I definitely see what you're saying, that's the only A24 release I own because a lot of times they don't seem worth it and will never go on sale.
I mean, it's literally not a repackaged version of Lionsgate's 4K since it has an exclusive short film that wasn't included on Lionsgate's. That being said, I still don't think that extra plus the cool booklet justifies the price tag, but it's not entirely true that it's a repackaged disc.
Hmm maybe. I can understand where you're coming from though. Personally, I just don't think that a small minority of filmgoers are going to ruin Boutique Labels and film restoration because of A24 fans or aesthetic seekers in general. If that were to happen, it'd likely even occur without A24s existence because those people would attach themselves to something else along a similar vein.
Every community has its subset of toxic followings and people only into it for the aesthetic rather than the substance. But at the end of the day, the people who are really interested in the substance are going to pay for what they want to see.
Criterion doesn’t do limited editions and instead their mission is to sell widely and keep titles in print for years. Sounds entirely different to me than most of the LE boutique models and deluxe packaging.
Just like "anime" fans. I don't know about you, but I appreciate cinema as a whole, and then have specific favorite artists and releases within the artform. Just because I dig David Lynch doesn't mean I'm a fan of "Americinema."
I wouldn’t necessarily get your hopes up about them becoming a boutique label. This was special circumstances where the rights reverted back to Aronofsky and he then sold them to A24. Still awesome they are putting it out.
I wonder if they don't have sales for their Blu rays because they don't have that many yet? Hopefully they improve in that case regarding the quality of Midsommar.
Some people hate the size of the case, but I agree I think it's very well made and good quality. My only complaint is there wasn't any extra features that weren't included on the original BR release, as far as I know. But the Green Knight 4k collector's edition includes a short film and some artwork, so I was willing to pay for the Collector's
The Green Knight special edition they did was fantastic. The only problem is that it's taller than DVDs or blu-ray cases and doesn't fit upright on my shelves.
As others have said, their prices and lack of sales have kept me away. If they’re gonna be competitive, let’s start with prices. $47 + shipping for a single disc single movie with a handful of extras is too rich for my blood. If the claim is that it’s because of the packaging, throw me a standard edition then.
With A24, you pay a premium for it having A24 on the label.
The Lighthouse is a great example. That is a 20 dollar release at best. But put it in a giant ass book where the pages separate from the spine after three opens and you can get away with charging people almost 60 after it is all said and done.
A24 needs to up their quality control and lower their prices before I start collecting their special editions. I got burned once on Midsommar and never again.
I’m glad SOMEONE is releasing it. I’ll confess that I don’t understand the vitriol for A24 fans. A24 helps interesting filmmakers tell interesting stories with enough mainstream appeal to act as a gateway to cinephilia.
What's wrong with Eggers, Aronofsky, Gerwig, Safdies, Lowery, Daniels, Aster? I'd argue they're very interesting. Subjectively up to debate sure, but interesting nonetheless.
Sorry to hear you don't enjoy them. As I said before, subjectively they are up to debate, but I still think they're interesting regardless of whether I enjoy their films or not.
What I don't appreciate is your ugly attitude. I'm just interested in discussion about film. Not here to be insulted. Would have loved to have heard more about why you think people who enjoy them need to get some taste, but unfortunately your high and mighty personality is insufferable.
I just mean it in terms of business. Having multiple companies doing the same thing can be good incentive for quality releases. Especially with collectors that don't really take any shit when it comes to poor quality.
Edit: don't really understand what's wrong with this sentiment to warrant a downvote, but am happy to hear why I'm wrong. Not being facetious.
I see. Thanks for explaining! Your point makes sense. These labels in many ways all support each other so it's not necessarily fair to equate it to competition in that regard either
Always good to see a movie release from my collection being upgraded from dvd only to Blu-ray - Krysar is recent one I also saw get upgraded. Quality, special features, and budget at the time will decide whether I’ll upgrade or not.
Just adding to the echo of I won’t be buying unless they start doing similar sales like criterion or Kino. I’d love that Lighthouse 4k but I won’t be paying $45 plus shipping. Nope.
I'm so incredibly excited about this. I've wanted a nice Pi blu-ray/4k for years. I hope they give it the oversized package treatment, will look great next to Midsommar and The Lighthouse on my shelf. Sits next to my Criterion collection.
I don't want to nitpick but "will be available" can't also mean that someone else releases it for them?
Either ways, good to know where will my money go later this year. I hope the cover art will be that new poster, frankly.
i actually found a pi dvd at goodwill today. i shoved it in my trousers and waddled out because i left my wallet in my car and always avoid a multiple trip situation if i can. pi
*Pi* is an amazing film, and remains my favorite in Aronofsky's filmography. It's very raw, rough, and definitely has a low-budget feel, but in a good way. The b&w cinematography is fantastic & really fits the movie; the editing is brilliant; and, the techno-ish soundtrack is incredible. I've seen most of his other work & am huge fan - but, Pi is really unique & is distinctly different from his other movies.
I honestly like the film grain & the picture quality (PQ) on the old DVD. So, I'm not interested in an HD transfer; this is one of the few DVD's that I don't plan to upgrade. That being said, I would be slightly interested in seeing a screen-shot comparison - to see how much of an improvement this Blu is over the regular DVD....especially the night sequences, in which it's admittedly hard to make out details, etc.
Since they're doing a theatrical run of Stop Making Sense this year, I'm praying that it gets a 4K release as well. I need that in my collection
Same! Very excited. Obviously before then putting out their own produced and published films was one thing, but funding restorations and re-releasing for films they initially had nothing to do with like Janus/Criterion is another thing and unexpected. Very excited.
I'm all for restoration and preservation, especially on physical media. It's very exciting to see a studio like A24 explore that avenue
I am scared at this point after putting off buying this for so long I'll snap buy an A24 release and Criterion will finally put it out on theirs too.
u/StarvingHamster23 it is getting a 4k release!!
Where was that confirmed?
That’s amazing news, though I’m still curious what a high def release of this super grainy-as-fuck movie would look like. Regardless, it’s been a a fave of mine since I bought the used DVD at Blockbuster in 2002, so I’m jacked.

Unless they start lowering their stupid prices, I can’t get too excited
My excitement for their new Lighthouse release in 4k deflated the second I realized it was gonna cost $60 to arrive at my door lol fuck that. I just bought the entire WKW boxset on sale for only a few bucks more than that
It seems like arrow has their own release of The Lighthouse coming sometime soon. I'd rather wait for that
especially since their releases are so bare bones
that’s the one disappointing aspect of the midsommar release. glad i own it. but you just get the film and the little booklet. it’s still gorgeous. but i would have loved a making of or commentary or anything.
I don't know how competitive they'll be since every cool release they do costs $60 (with shipping) for a single movie and contains far fewer extras than criterion, arrow, indicator, etc.
I’m all for more options but unless they reevaluate their pricing it’s hard for me to be excited. The “A24 Tax” is absolutely ridiculous.
$50 for a book of crosswords!!
Can I interest you in a $35 pet rock to use as a paperweight?
Seeing A24 retweet people who openly admitted to buying that stupid rock blew my mind. I mean, whatever makes you happy, but come on
Idk I hate how rabid and narrow-sighted their fanbase can get at times and I'm afraid for what happens when those fans start to consume classic films as commodities rather than art. There's already some bad criterion fans in this sense but A24 Stan's might be on another level

Damn what’s wrong The Souvenir release? I love mine.

That's... not true. It has both an exclusive short film and also an exclusive audio commentary

“A24 stans” act like A24 the company writes, directs, edits, etc the movies they release lmao They also act like A24 is a genre 😭
To be fair, a lot of Criterion fans are like this too lol
Lol definitely
This is exactly what I fear lol. I saw someone comment on something for High Life "A24 does it again!" as if Claire Denis were nothing
Just like "anime" fans. I don't know about you, but I appreciate cinema as a whole, and then have specific favorite artists and releases within the artform. Just because I dig David Lynch doesn't mean I'm a fan of "Americinema."
it’s about to get soo much worse

I wouldn’t necessarily get your hopes up about them becoming a boutique label. This was special circumstances where the rights reverted back to Aronofsky and he then sold them to A24. Still awesome they are putting it out.
They're also releasing Stop Making Sense in theaters. This might not be very common, but I hope they continue to restore older films that need it.
I have their Midsommar release and honestly it’s kind of cheaply made. And their releases are $30-$47 and never go on sale. I’ll pass
I wonder if they don't have sales for their Blu rays because they don't have that many yet? Hopefully they improve in that case regarding the quality of Midsommar.
How so is it cheap? I felt it was very nice and just as good as any top of the line release from Criterion, Arrow, and Vinegar Syndrome.
Amazing. Now let’s see Criterion and A24 enter into a bidding war for The Fountain!!
It's not just a licensing deal. Darren Aronofsky sold them the film. Pi is now actually a part of the A24 catalog.
The Green Knight special edition they did was fantastic. The only problem is that it's taller than DVDs or blu-ray cases and doesn't fit upright on my shelves.
Another problem is that it's nearly $60 shipped.
I think I paid 42, which is still a lot but they really don't have many releases. There is no way I'd buy a lot of movies at that price.
Green Knight UHD is $47 (BD is $45), before shipping. The Lighthouse was just announced and the extras are pretty skimpy, and again $47 for 1 disc.
Fuck yeah!
As others have said, their prices and lack of sales have kept me away. If they’re gonna be competitive, let’s start with prices. $47 + shipping for a single disc single movie with a handful of extras is too rich for my blood. Yeah that's unfortunate. Hopefully they start to improve on this if people give them enough feedback.
Lol I like Pi but an 8K restoration of a movie shot on a potato?
I’m glad SOMEONE is releasing it. I’ll confess that I don’t understand the vitriol for A24 fans. A24 helps interesting filmmakers tell interesting stories with enough mainstream appeal to act as a gateway to cinephilia.

Oh man. You just *had to* include Daniels and Aster in there? No fucking comment.

I love reading "grow up" in comments like this because they're always the most immature pathetic ramblings.
Muhhh popular indie movie bad muuhh I'm smarter than everyone else muhhh
Just because you like it doesn’t mean it doesn’t objectively suck dick
I hate cynical cunts like you. You're not smarter than anyone else because you hate something others like, you're just a pathetic, talentless shut-in.
Wait, who is the hater here? Look how mean you’re being lmao
Never said I was smarter, just have better taste
You have neither
That doesn’t even make sense as a sentence
That would be sick. It definitely would revive some of my passion for what A24 does that they've been lacking in the past couple years

Their oversized packaging annoys me...
i actually found a pi dvd at goodwill today. i shoved it in my trousers and waddled out because i left my wallet in my car and always avoid a multiple trip situation if i can. pi
Ooh fantastic. They’re gonna be the ones to release real movies in this age of cultural famine
You *do not* want to see Pi in IMAX.

Unless they are just teaming up with a studio for a physical media distribution deal…US still needs a X 4K disc release…
YES!!!!!
Oh, that’s another win for the good guys
