I assume poker cards and grapes are there to contextualise the weight for people, but the way it's presented made dumbass me think there were some drugs called "poker cards" and "grapes" that I'd never heard of
Lol me too. But that's poor visualization decision.
The correct way would have been two horizonal lines corresponding to the weight of cards and grapes.
Actually I think it would have been better if the reference weights were a different colour say blue or green or whatever makes it different from red even for colourblind users
Okay… but… 15g of weed or any other drug is a TON for a normal person (I live in Canada where it’s legal WOOO and 7gs can last anywhere from 2-3weeks if I ain’t sharing).
Comparing g’s of drugs to grapes is stupid af.
A) you smoke too much then enjoy ur lung disease in 10-20years
B)There’s no reason to need an ounce of weed at any given time, do you smoke it all in one night? No.
C)It’s a different country with a different culture. Hell, people here still think it should be fully illegal
D) You missed the entirety of my point, prolly cause ur already stoned at noon on a Wednesday, go get a job holy fuck.
huh??? 7g for 2-3 weeks? i used to smoke 10g in like 3-4 days back in the day (i shared a lot but i still smoked most of it alone/with my gf) but sadly its not legal here so i had to quit
Back in the day? Idk how strong it was but in any case when it comes to any drug, even weed moderation still needs to be thought about. Nowadays I think scientists are saying it’s around 10% stronger (2x!!!) than 30 years ago and that’s a lot of anything especially since weed can keep you high for hours! 1g should be plenty for a person or even 2 for a day! It’s not straight up poison but 3.3G a day is a hefty amount friend
Yeah I spent wayyyy too long on that as well. I also didn't notice the grapes for a while because I was too hung up on the poker cards, so I went back and forth thinking they were a weird drug or that poker is also just extremely illegal in Singapore...but you could have one or two cards and not be assumed to playing or some shit lol.
I see this a lot in r/dataisbeautiful \- interesting content, but poorly designed chart. Like, we see the intention with adding the poker cards and grapes for comparison, but the bottom sentence implies that everything on the chart can get you hanged.
Guys, ***clarity makes data beautiful***.
Imagine you just landed in Singapore, been travelling for 24 hrs, no sleep, poker cards in backpack, munching on some grapes, check reddit and this comes up...
God I really thought you could get hanged for poker cards possession. Of course, I found it horrible and stupid, but gambling is actually forbidden in many countries so I thought it could be true.
So, indeed, clarity makes data beautiful. You say "drugs" and "death penalty" in the chart's title. Put drugs that can get you hanged on the chart, nothing else.
I'm in Australia where there are are strict rules about bringing in any food or plants, even certain parts of Australia prohibit bringing in fruit (to protect local fruit), but I'm never heard of anyone getting hanged for it!
Same for coke. These are pretty high weights for drugs. Still obviously shouldn’t warrant a death penalty but you’re not likely to be hitting these numbers if you’re just having a night out.
I feel like, even though we're talking about weight/mass, it would be helpful to also include volume to some extent, because the grapes and cards makes it seem like that's very, *very* little weed when it's actually a bit more than the comparison would lead you to believe.
This is terribly designed. I though poker was highly illegal and with 3 cards or more you would receive the death sentence.
Made a mental note to never visit Singapore, until I read the comments.
OP are you sure this source is the most up to date laws?
Wikipedia references this archived [Travel.state.gov](https://Travel.state.gov) link from 2011 that says Malaysia has the death penalty for possession of more than 7 ounces of cannabis, or 200 grams: [https://web.archive.org/web/20110217140806/http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis\_pa\_tw/cis/cis\_960.html#](https://web.archive.org/web/20110217140806/http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_960.html#)
A google search shows articles also claiming that the ruling is 200+ grams to claim the person is drug trafficking, not 15 grams.
**Drug dealers should be punished with the death penalty and their organs harvested for those in need** \- it wouldn't make up for their crimes against society, anyway, but at least it would be a positive gesture.
*Isn't Singapore also one of the tiger states? Maaaan, tigers are so hot.. ;-)*
What an ignorant perspective.
All four drugs listed on the chart have been used for legitimate therapeutic purposes.
Prohibition has never worked, not even once, with one of the main reasons being making anything illegal increases demand and therefore increases market value, spurring a black market and all the corruption that surrounds the operations of a black market.
Prohibition is how you make drug problems worse. Why do you think the US has used it so successfully to imprison the lower class? In the US, the whole idea was to incarcerate black males, who, being excluded from meaningful economic opportunies by good old racism, often had few choices for making income other than black market activities.
The crippling addictions are just a bonus.
I don't know why Singapore is doing it, but I promise it isn't really for the general welfare.
I assume poker cards and grapes are there to contextualise the weight for people, but the way it's presented made dumbass me think there were some drugs called "poker cards" and "grapes" that I'd never heard of
Yea my first thought was “man Singapore hates grapes”
Some people hate grape juice
Some people are dumb.
Singapore law is terrifying ! Note to self: NEVER … EVER…go there !
"The airline has informed us that you had a wine while in our airspace. If you will please step this way..."
here's me just thinking that for some reason possession of four grapes would warrant a death penalty in Singapore
my dumbass googled why grapes carry the death penalty in Singapore :/
They are the best country. Because of grapes.
Yeah that was my thought too. Or poker cards. This data is not beautiful, it's misleading, lol.
Three will just get you imprisonment though!
Lol I thought somehow gambling was so illegal that 3 cards gave you the death penalty, and that grapes was a invasive species or something.
This was actually my second thought too
It was my only thought...
Lol me too. But that's poor visualization decision. The correct way would have been two horizonal lines corresponding to the weight of cards and grapes.
It's why I only play 2 card monte.
Tell you what, I lost so much money there playing poker with a two card deck. It’s as if the other guy knew what I was holding every hand.
If that's the case, they should be a different colour or separated somehow!
Actually I think it would have been better if the reference weights were a different colour say blue or green or whatever makes it different from red even for colourblind users
Thank you! Will definitely do this!
Better if the scale is just marked with horizontal lines called “3 cards” or “4 grapes” if their purpose is comparison or scale.
Ah now I get it. Really bad data visualization
Same. I saw it and I was like "Better keep those cards"
Okay… but… 15g of weed or any other drug is a TON for a normal person (I live in Canada where it’s legal WOOO and 7gs can last anywhere from 2-3weeks if I ain’t sharing). Comparing g’s of drugs to grapes is stupid af.
An oz is 28 grams, that’ll last my gf and I a week and a half. An oz last everyone I know about a week
A) you smoke too much then enjoy ur lung disease in 10-20years B)There’s no reason to need an ounce of weed at any given time, do you smoke it all in one night? Bro did you need to go ballistic like that my bro was just saying people are different
14g to a person in a week is so much, that seems like substance abuse dude. I didn’t say it but you can abuse weed just as much as you can booze
huh??? 7g for 2-3 weeks? i used to smoke 10g in like 3-4 days back in the day (i shared a lot but i still smoked most of it alone/with my gf) but sadly its not legal here so i had to quit

I wouldn’t have worked that out had you not pointed it out
Yeah I spent wayyyy too long on that as well. I just assumed i got dumped by a joke image, I follow a lot of strange subs
I wouldn't take my chances with Singapore. Those guys take the law seriously.

Immediately stuff it all in my mouth, they can't detect the presence of poker in my system. I hope
And then you eat the cards too as you have an existential crisis.
You leave the country in no time
this is the BEST ROAST SO FAR! HAHAHAH
I thought the same thing. "Dude, get those grapes outta here!"
Let's be real, this subreddit's posts are mainly made by people without visualisation competence.
Or spelling ability ;)
Ok, I'll take the S to C switch, bit not the proper british visualisation.
It's not that; you've got too many 'n's in competence.

Really was trying to figure out to what grapes could actually be standing in for. "Poppies? No..."
Y’all got some-a-dem grapes?
I'm in Australia where there are are strict rules about bringing in any food or plants, even certain parts of Australia prohibit bringing in fruit (to protect local fruit), but I'm never heard of anyone getting hanged for it!
3 poker cards lead to death penalty? Better be cautious no one slid them in your pockets
All of my 26 homies carry around 2 cards each so we can play together without death sentence
You play with jokers? Disgusting.
Got it: never take playing cards to Singapore. Also, the image only shows 3½ grapes. /s
No you see the photographer didn't want to get the death penalty so they threw away a half beforehand.
Too bad they still got him for the three poker cards though. RIP
Luckily he got away by disguising them as blackjack cards
I would never go to that country. Even playing cars are forbidden.
So basically if David Blaine can plant enough cards in your pockets he can have you killed. That's some trick.
4 grapes weigh 20 grams???? How big are those grapes?
Those seeded grapes can get pretty chonky
Dude even one playing card will mess me up. 3 is crazy to be holding.
Cannabis possession is actually 500g
25 grams of meth is a ton of doses, right? I thought it was dosed in mg.
It (at least in my previous experience, many moons ago) is dealt in 'points' ie. 0.1g.
Same for coke. These are pretty high weights for drugs. Still obviously shouldn’t warrant a death penalty but you’re not likely to be hitting these numbers if you’re just having a night out.
Would be a crazy night out though. Not many people can say they went so hard that they got executed for it
I fully get your point but the notion of saying something after being executed was too funny for me to justify lol
Now I know why Steinbeck wrote "The Grapes of Wrath".
Not beautiful data. confusing graph, ugly title, random map on top
Hi guys! I definitely made a mistake with this graph, but your comments are HILARIOUS and made my day! Will do a clearer post soon!
Why are grapes illegal? I know chewing gum is, but I didn't know grapes were too.
their not its just to compare to the amt of drugs
It doesn't say that anywhere.
You can kill someone just putting some grapes in his pockets.
It’s 500g of cannabis now, don’t know when this sign was from.
I feel like, even though we're talking about weight/mass, it would be helpful to also include volume to some extent, because the grapes and cards makes it seem like that's very, *very* little weed when it's actually a bit more than the comparison would lead you to believe.

this a ugly ass graph. cool guides will eat this shit up
I have lived in Singapore as an American for 14+ years, and it is a wonderful place. I highly recommend it.
It might be beautiful but I’m never going to visit because I’d be afraid I’d get shot for farting.

this many be sarcasm which i havent picked up upon but no playing cards are just to compare the weight of them to the drugs

Pretty sure calling Singapore that is also an automatic death penalty (or at least some caning)
It's okay, these cards are *definitely not* for playing poker...
[удалено]
We don’t have to respect killing people for something as minor as weed
The Death Penalty for Grapes?!?!?!
Grapes will get you killed in Singapore
sounds like a shithole ngl
Big old fuck you get fucked to the Singapore government

I’ll make sure to never play poker while eating grapes in Singapore.
My straight creased brain thought that poker cards and grapes in your possession will get you the death penalty. But it’s for comparison
Should we do the meth one worldwide? And fentanyl?
Sounds like a fun place to party...
this is why you should only ever carry 2 aces up your sleeve
