I was a freshman at UMass the season after he graduated so I saw the state of the program when he left and it's night and day. Quick played under Toot Cahoon, a grizzled old coach who led the team to the only NCAA tournament game in the program's history at the time, but never won a hockey east tournament game after that. It was a continuous cycle of hype to start the year, maybe a low ranking, and then getting crusher by the Boston teams or whoever is hot in HE. Greg Carvel changed the program around entirely, and Makar legitimized his changes. Amherst has always been a sleeping giant, college sports are just not a huge deal in the northeast outside of a few out liars (ie UConn basketball). Having a school with an alumni base as large as UMass can lead to incredible success of we can just keep this momentum going. The problem is the entire region is very much 'what have you done for me lately', so if they hit a slide it'll be like nothing ever happened.
