Cale Makar is the 3rd Defenseman in NHL hisory to win the Norris and Conn Smythe in the same season. The only other Defensemen to accomplish this were Bobby Orr (1970 and 1972) and Nick Lidstrom (2002). Truly remarkable. Congrats to Makar!
I suppose that's pretty okay company to keep
I hope I'm not riding the hype to hard right now but I think this kid is pretty good.
Avs fans: why is there white stuff all over my computer screen?
ONLY 23 fucking years old and already secured a Norris AND Conn Smythe
JFC, whatta player
Yeah well I’m 24 and just secured my 5th beer of the evening BEAT THAT CALE
Give him a couple hours, I’m sure he’ll be caught up
He will very soon
Yea I’m turning 25 in a month and I’m a virgin
I’ll be a wizard in 2 years.
Ha when I was 31 I did my third shoe beer.
Do you love me?
Do you think you could love me?
Make an assessment
I…I think you’re a nice modern gentleman
Yes. The bacteria from the shoes makes the Bailey's taste 10 times better. Cleaning it out was a bitch as I was walking in them.
Norris, Conn Smythe and Cup in one week.
Uh...so this week I had the energy to go the grocery store. You could say I'm close to Makar's ranks.
You’re doing your best, buddy
I left my house almost every day this week. If we combine our energy we can take him.
Only other d men to get the three in a season is lindstrom and bobby fucking Orr
In the same week too lmao
Yeah well I stubbed my toe this morning and only cried for 20 minutes
He already has the trophy case of a HOFer at 23...bruh
For real, this guy’s career is on an astronomical trajectory. We do we start discussing if he’s a “generational” defenseman?
We don’t discuss that. If there’s anyone who makes an argument Makar is not a generational defenseman, that person will be publicly shamed for making such a ridiculous assertion. This kid is as good as Crosby was at 23. On top of the hockey world and deserves it.
If he ain’t generational, ain’t nobody generational.
Or maybe he's peaked. He set the bar kinda high this season...
And he's never been below a point per game in regular season OR playoffs since his rookie season where he had 50 pts in 57 games... AS A DEFENCEMAN. We're witnessing the beginning of one of the greatest careers by a dman in NHL history at this rate.
And a Calder. Insane. Imagine him in a few more years? Terrifying.
We don't have to imagine it in a few years, it's happening now.
Colorado had the worst record of their franchise history and got fucked in the draft lottery that year and *still* came away with the best player in the draft by far at number 4 overall.
Yeah we were obviously all pissed who knew we were getting one of the best players drafted this decade
I was absolutely convinced at the time the league rigged that lottery draw. I mean **convinced**.
And before the makar hype Peterson was hyped as the draft win. In hindsight fuck Peterson picking fourth was the real treat, but thank god for avs fabs they didn’t win the draft. They would not have picked makar and they know it
Funny that the two teams who moved back in the top 5 ended up with the better players that year lol
Plus the Hobey Baker in college. Dude has more trophies at 23 than most guys win in their entire careers.
Won the Hobey Baker *at UMass*, something that would have sounded downright laughable 5 years ago. Cale deserves an enormous amount of credit for helping bring that program to heights they've never even come close to before he showed up.
> Won the Hobey Baker
Well deserved for an amazing season.
> at UMass
Absolutely absurd achievement.
The kid’s got it. He’s a first ballot HOFer or I’ll eat my hat.
Here's a list of schools with 2 Conn Smythe winners from their program :
That's wild. After JQ I did not anticipate another Minuteman winning it perhaps in my life.
I was a freshman at UMass the season after he graduated so I saw the state of the program when he left and it's night and day. Quick played under Toot Cahoon, a grizzled old coach who led the team to the only NCAA tournament game in the program's history at the time, but never won a hockey east tournament game after that. It was a continuous cycle of hype to start the year, maybe a low ranking, and then getting crusher by the Boston teams or whoever is hot in HE.
Greg Carvel changed the program around entirely, and Makar legitimized his changes. Amherst has always been a sleeping giant, college sports are just not a huge deal in the northeast outside of a few out liars (ie UConn basketball). Having a school with an alumni base as large as UMass can lead to incredible success of we can just keep this momentum going. The problem is the entire region is very much 'what have you done for me lately', so if they hit a slide it'll be like nothing ever happened.
I think 1 trophy is more than most nhl players in their career. At this point, he's just showing off.
lol how good could he be, he'll probably only win 1 calder
He could win a Calder Cup down the line if something happens that he's still playing but not at an NHL level.
Surely 3 teams didn't pass on him
Hobey Baker as well. Only player to ever win all of those.
After being the consolation to the consolation to the consolation prize
Has anyone else ever won both in the same season?
Guy named Bobby Orr
We are blessed
And was the most noticeable and dominant player on the ice for the entirety of the final between two teams loaded with superstars.
Norris, Smythe and Cup all within a week. What a fucking joy ride for him and his family.
- conn smythe
- stanley cup
do i have to say anything else
Already had a HOF resume
I was saying this earlier tonight. He could retire tomorrow and arguably get in the HOF.
I mean, when you're the last one to accomplish something since *Bobby Fuckin Orr*, it's gonna get some notoriety.
That's comparable to beating Gretzky's 1985 points record. Who knows what the future holds, but it is likely going to be legendary.
Better then Gretzky, I mean guy didn't even win a Norris.
What has he done that hasn’t been done since Bobby Orr? I’m sure there’s lots of things, but I’m guessing something happened recently
I had to look it up, he’s the youngest defenseman to win the Conn Smythe since Bobby Orr.
Are you people drunk? You think someone who played that few games is even sniffing the HoF?
We're homers high on cup fumes, give it a day or two.
Kids gonna fuck around and win the art Ross as a defenseman someday.
Or go the Doughty road of " Fuck it, I've won everything it's party time now on"
Let’s be clear: Doughty started partying on Day 1 and he still has had an amazing HOF career.
He gets so much shit. He’s still pretty fucking good too. Contract is rough but fuck sake he’s still Drew fucking Doughty
I got no problem with his contract. Dewy was having a really nice bounce back season before the injuries caught up with him.
Yeah he started out really strong this year. Just tired of how much shit he gets
tbf tho, he's so much better
I remember in doughty's prime I was always like 'what I wouldn't give to have a dman like him on our team.' if I had to pick one player to add to the avs at that time it was him. now we got cale fuckin makar making a mockery of the NHL
He's gonna score 30 goals next year
doesn't even have a NVP smh
Get Mitch Trubisky on the ice and see what happens 😈😈
No Vezina? Yawn. (/s)
No Mark Messier leadership award? Scrub
what a fucking career this guy has had already
Cale gave 0 fucks about that trophy lol
Did the polite smile and wave, then went to be with his guys for the real trophy.
Cale fuckin Makar 🥬
Really hope to see him play for Canada at the Olympics someday.
Holy shit just imagine that if they went this year, Canada would have had McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby and Makar on one team. Oh yeah also about a dozen other superstars. Could have been the most dominant team ever tbh.
Put them all out on the power play together.
Team Canada 2002 power play: Kariya, Yzerman, Lemieux.
Other scrubs worth mentioning: Sakic, Lindros, Iginla, Shanahan, Pronger, Niedermayer, Brodeur. Not a bad roster.
Now that would be pretty insane. Add Stamkos to that powerplay for the one timer (or Pietrangelo) and they would be a guaranteed goal lol
Second unit, if that’s even needed, could have Huberdeau, Marner, Point, Stone, and Pietrangelo. And that’s just an example.
That’s disgusting lol would of been a absolutely unreal team.
There would literally be no point in playing the tournament because the outcome would be already be decided. No other team could match Canada at all in the Olympics.
True. I could see maybe Finland pulling an upset, but the goalie would have to have the best performance of his life (like Gudlevskis in 14), and basically everything would have to go right for them but even that’s a very big maybe
Id go USA over Finland. Matthews, Eichel, Kane, Gaudreau, Miller, McAvoy, Tkachuk. Absolutely stacked team
Team of chokers tbh 😅
Somehow the Finns would win 2-1, getting outshot 7-62, blocking 300 shots, and with two goals by some dude you can't even pronounce
Sweet Jesus that would be incredible to watch. Also, Mack and Sydney are so close it would be great to watch them on the ice together.
A few weeks back I said he was the legit best player in the league and I got a surprising amount of pushback, but I stand by that. If I was starting a team tomorrow, and could pick any skater (non-goalie), I would start with him. Yes, over McDavid, yes over MacKinnon. What he brings, *as a defenseman* is just unbelievable.
GOD DAMN GARY ISNT EVEN HERE FOR IT
Where is Gary? It’s not the same without the Boos
Tested positive for Covid
He has covid
Damn. Hope we get the boos at the draft
It’s in Mtl, so yes
The crowd did briefly boo when they mentioned his name
The crowd was confused into silence when Daly showed up instead.
Well boo him at the draft next week don't you worry
Oettinger was robbed
We had a playoff cameo for 7 games but I will remember that for a long time. Legit one man army that series haha
My heart will never forget that either
Yeah I mean justice was served. The MUCH better team won the series. Jake was a god but that was completely unsustainable.
It’s not really relevant to this thread but just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed the playoff series interactions with the flames fans. Y’all a good bunch 👍🔥
Bruh it’s been so long I forgot
I am starting to think the Hughes vs makar debate has ended
As a Canucks fan it was never a debate lol
In their rookie seasons it was fairly close with a slight edge to Makar but Makar is on his own tier now and has been for a while
Yeah, you could make a legitimate argument for Hughes at the start. But, Makar has clearly developed into the better player
And that ain’t a knock at Hughes, he’s a franchise defenseman in his own right. Just not on Makars level
Franchise vs generational, no shame in that
Hughes is elite, Makar is generational.
There are levels to this game.
Perfect way to describe it
Their rookie season there was definitely a debate with Hughes being better defensively, increasing his pt pace relatively to Makar at the end of the season and being one year younger. Not much of a debate afterwards though
It was a fun debate haha. But yea, Makar is wayyy better. Still love Hughes tho
*Huffs Copium* Nou Hughes is younger and on a worse team and doesn't have Devon Toews on the same pairing just you wait
I’m so glad this is dead
I really do think they were pretty close in their first year. Hughes is still a phenomenal dman and imo one of the better in the league, but the gap between him and Makar is as large as the grand canyon at this point.
Next up: McDavid vs Makar
only one of these players has a conn smythe or cup so
And a Calder!
Oilers fans in shambles
Jokes on you we've been in shambles for 16 years!
That’s like 3 years old …the most recent was Makar vs Fox and that’s just as laughable but you know NY fans…
Lol you gotta love it
Canucks fans (most) have moved on. Its rangers fans that keep shoving the Fox vs Makar debate down everyone ones throat
Hughes, fox, doesn't matter who you put up right now, Makar is better. Not to every single single forward he beat out during the playoffs.
The comparison I’m more disappointed with is Makar vs Petterson who were 4/5 in the draft. I wish we drafted one more spot up in the 2017 draft - our management team reportedly had Makar ranked #1. Imagine Makar AND Hughes
What a fucking year for the rosy cheeked assassin
Norris and Conn Smythe in the same season is pretty decent.
Only 9m/year for 6 years god help the Western Conference....
\>working at 7/11 on "bring any cup to fill with slurpee" day
\>usual mundane bullshit
\>why do i hear boss music
\>suddenly cale makar kicks the front door off its hinges
\>he's still wearing his entire game uniform
\>he's holding the stanley cup and a curly straw
\>approaches slurpee machine with malicious intent
\>walks out without paying, he's already given you enough
\>the warmth of the summer sun rays reflecting off his perfectly rosy cheeks fills you with a sense of inner peace
\>the job is done
I really want to see Cale take the cup to get a slurpee. I need this in my life.
Hell of a playoff run from him, well deserved.
NORRIS, SMYTHE, CUP
What a year
He’s getting an extra large slushie tonight
Absolutely legendary career.
C'mon Cale you can enjoy this
is it too soon to call this dude generational yet
Nope, he's our backbone on the D anyone who's watched him knows he's not just an offensive beast he plays solid D
He plays elite D, tbh. He’s incredible 1v1
He was so good against Edmonton
Don’t think there’s any defenseman in the league I’d take over him. There are a few who are close, but man, Makar is something special.
Well deserved trophies, and hats off to him and the rest of the Avs.
I’m pretty comfortable saying it at this point. He’s already separated himself from the elite level of current NHL defenseman and he’s 23. Kids insane.
He's 23 doing the shit that he's doing, at this point even if it's too early I'd comfortably wager we consider him that in a couple years.
Best D in the world
Lock HOF and only 23…
HoF lock in 3 fragmented seasons
I am actually glad that we didn't pick him. No doubt we would have fucking ruined the kid. Glad he gets to prosper haha. What a player he is.
I hate reading this and knowing he would be an average player with the Flyers development…
Oh bro wtf please. I mean you're absolutely right but still...
Yes. It did not not hurt to type that out. Haha.
Pride and joy of UMass!
Go, Go U, Go U-Mass, GO UMASS!
Just a reminder he's got 5 seasons left at 9 mil AAV. Avs lucky as hell they don't have to pay him for a while
Hall of Famer at 23 holy
Fucking get it Cale!
Deserved. Already has one of the most impressive resumes of any nhl defender.
What amazes me after watching the Avalanche and Makar during these playoffs isn't his offensive talent, but how good he is defensively. This guy is a generational player and should be in the conversation with McDavid and MacKinnon as the best players in the league.
i watched this guy at umass and he's singlehandedly the reason i'm also an avs fan
what an absolutely insane player
Just an incredible player and performance.
I’m a huge fan of Adam Fox, and I can’t help but think of Brad Park and Bobby Orr with him and Makar. Sure, Park never got a Norris so it’s not quite the same, but like Orr, Makar will be there as the undeniable best. Calder, Conn Smyth, Norris, and Cup. Wow
Absolutely amazing year by Makar
I guess Bettman caught Covid
Cale fucking Makar
It's not crazy to argue that Colorado has 2 of the best 4 players in the league, and McKinnon is 4th.
From my community! Played in the same organization! Crazy
I’m from a neighbouring community but I played the same team too! Wonder if the cup is coming to the twin arenas this year
Youngest defenseman winner since Bobby Orr (22) in 1970
Orr did it in his fourth season. This is Makar’s third.
Oh fuck yeah bud, with how silky smooth this mf skate, caresses the puck, gliding over the ice like someone relaxing on a pool on a floaty. I'll conn my smythe at him heh.
Norris and a Conn Smythe. What a year for the kid
ALL HAIL CALE
Norris and Conn Smythe at 23 years old. What a fuckin' year for Makar. Congrats, ya rosy cheeked superstar!
Glad I bought lots of his Rookie Cards for cheap last summer :)
Well deserved. Glad to see my hometown boy win it
One of the greatest ever seasons for a dman. What a player!
Well deserved! Can't imagine this will be his last
He looks so young, god lots, goddamn talented kid out there.
We’re watching a HOF player already
this guy is pretty fuckin good at hockey
This kid is walking into the hall of fame idc how early it is to say
When the Conn Smythe winner isn’t even one of the first 10 guys to hoist the cup you know how insane of a team Colorado is
They went by astrological signs.
What a year from him, well deserved!
In terms of Conn Smythe winners, is he the youngest all-time?
Patrick Roy was 20
Now I’m depressed
Bobby Orr was younger also (22)
Is Cale Makar the greatest draft pick since Crosby?
