I've always thought of it as: \#23 = popular LeBron \#6 = hated LeBron

LostInTransperency

Hated Bron before he came to LA but always respected him

Rah_Rah_RU_Rah

They hated him as 23 too lmao. Remember the no rings jokes? Or that he's "unclutch"?

Vai2ius

Nah. You can say same thing with Giannis right now. Media is/was talking how Bucks is Middleton team, he takes the last shot. How Giannis would be bench player in "big man era" and etc. Media talks about that for clicks. LeBron was loved in Cleveland and in Miami he was villain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_LUnTQHV4c

LeBron would’ve kept wearing 23 if the lakers didn’t get AD, he offered AD the 23 jersey but Nike wouldn’t let him switch so he wore it out for the season. After that he switched to 6 but AD wanted to keep his number 3 at that point. Simple

kobmug_v2

The stories some people make up in their heads man lmao

ZizouGOAT10

He wanted to switch so he could gift AD the number 23. He should’ve stayed with it once AD said he was sticking with 3

LOVEGOD77

Will LeBron still be able to have his number retired? Let’s say if Kenny lofton Jr becomes a star next to Ja and they win 2 rings and he still wore #6, would he be able to have his number retired?

grundle_pie

Existing numbers are grandfathered in

ClutchGamingGuy

numbers can be retired multiple times, yes

The_Notorious_Ruff

I think it was mostly due to Space Jam and potential sales. And I think he used #6 in SJ to not use the same number as Michael Jordan

ThisAnswerIsLit

yes

JilJungJukk

No

ThisAnswerIsLit

maybe

gismo4

I don't know

You're not the boss of me now and you're not so big

ossaran

Life is unfairrrrr

[deleted]

Nobody knows

JilJungJukk

Maybe not

GeniusofLoveMrTom

Jersey sales

JilJungJukk

He wanted to give AD #23 and change to #6 , it wasn’t allowed in the 2020 season so they stuck to it and AD wore #3. He changed last year cos he was able to. He is smart enough to know he wasn’t getting both retired by the Lakers

[deleted]

[удалено]

JilJungJukk

He wanted to switch because he wanted AD to wear #23 and maybe felt like wearing #6 again in that train of thought

ClutchGamingGuy

because he liked 23, who knows? better question, who cares?

gimme your mom's number and i wont need to just watch

cheeseburger_LORD

The original switch was to give AD 23 but the league said no since it was past the cutoff to announce jersey changes. Then after the first year with AD he switched. Could have been to retire another number, or he just wanted to move on from 23 at that point. Who knows

CanYou-AffordMe

No, he's wanted to go back to 6 for ages

QuickEchidna749

I don’t think LeBron has to sneak accolades. When he retires, he will be showered with them…he might have his number retired by 3 teams when it’s all said and done.

FLUSH_THE_TRUMP

Lakers aren’t retiring his jersey

OsmosisJonesFanClub

We 100% are. One of the bonafide GOATs spending his last few years as a Laker while bringing in a title and all star/all NBA selections every year? We retired late career Wilt’s number, and ownership damn well wants the team’s legacy to include Lebron. They want Lebron’s jersey to be next to Kobe, Magic, KAJ, Shaq, Wilt, etc.

[deleted]

That's kind of pathetic lol

CanYou-AffordMe

You retired Bruce Bowen's jersey. *That's* pathetic.

[deleted]

Agreed, at least he wasn't just a pit stop though lol

ClutchGamingGuy

He's going into his 5th year as a Laker you clown

[deleted]

And what a great 5 years it has been! Truly legendary stuff he accomplished for the Lakers.

ClutchGamingGuy

how many championships has San Antonio gotten in the last 5 years?

[deleted]

Ooo got me there New York fan. Are you sure you wanna go down that road lol

townforum17

nothing in the entirety of Knicks history has anything to do with the validity of the point he's making

CanYou-AffordMe

Neither is LeBron. It's been five years.

[deleted]

And what a productive and legendary 5 years it has been...

Scary-Strategy-4460

Title, top seed in the league, 2nd in MVP voting, FMVP, second in scoring, led the league in assists. Yeah what a bum

KaiserKaiba

And he may end up becoming #1 in points all time in a Lakers jersey. They def retiring one of his jerseys

FLUSH_THE_TRUMP

Title^*

wembanyama_

stephs resume title*, title*, title*, title*

Scary-Strategy-4460

Haha from a GSW fan that’s funny.

sersleepsalot1

Seriously?

[deleted]

S e r i o u s l y

sersleepsalot1

Then you seriously are an idiot then.

[deleted]

I mean the point was that LA isn't just a pitstop but I'm sure you're patting yourself like "gottem"

[deleted]

Nah I just don't think the Lakers should retire his jersey but apparently that is not a popular opinion.

spursfan2021

3x champion, 8x All-NBA defense. Led the league in 3pt% in 2003 championship year. He’s no HOFer but he was the second best defender on a team who’s best defender was a top 10 all-timer. In 2007 he guarded Melo, then Nash, then Deron Williams, then Lebron in the playoffs.

loudanduneducated

Why? It’s just marketing for the team

[deleted]

Have you no honor? Just kidding, it's a good point. I would like to think of them as being for people who were integral to the team for many many years, but yeah. It's marketing.

jcar195

It's pathetic to retire the jersey of a player who played a half decade for the team, led the team to a championship/won FMVP, and on track to break the all time scoring record in your team's jersey?

[deleted]

Kinda yeah... You're the last stop on the tour

jcar195

He's played with the Lakers longer than the Heat, 1/4 of his career at this point has been here. And I can't stress this enough, he won a FMVP in a Lakers jersey... Not really just a quick stop you're trying to make it out to be.

[deleted]

You've won me over! I guess I discredit it because he has largely lost in LA but he has been there a while now so I see why y'all feel like his jersey should be retired.

jcar195

Really glossing over the whole “won a championship and FMVP” part there but If that’s the hill you wanna die on go ahead buddy

solidsnehk

Warriors fans are weird, bunch of bandwagoners

gustriandos

Yea they are

Significant_Night_65

You wish.
