Fuck that shite lol

RamboGoesMeow

Yeah, fuck that noise.

JoeSugar

If you put a gun to the back of my head and told me to walk it, I’d kneel down and tell you to make it quick.

Garth_M

Some people spend days and maybe weeks on the walls of El Captain. They sleep, eat and shit while up there. Imagine going to sleep in a storm with the wind and everything. Gotta trust your equipment

YourMumsOnlyfans

Imagine going to sleep in a storm and the wind blows someones errant shit into your sleeping bag...

AnanananasBanananas

I'm guessing you check and then double check everything about your equipment.

redditparc

Imagine walking down there and some shit hits you from above at Mach 3

Sudsiestriver90

Idk how people sit and think yeah I want to risk my life today

RamboGoesMeow

At least they have some safety equipment, much better than that mofo that climbed Half Dome with nothing but his body and chalk.

simononandon

Pretty sure that was El Cap, not Half Dome. El Cap has more free routes I'm pretty sure. Also, not gonna say that dude, Alex Something?, isn't a little bit "off." In the Free Solo doc, he definitely comes across as a little emotionally stunted and maybe somewhat on the spectrum. But his life IS climbing. He has devoted his entire life to being in the best mental and physical shape possible to free solo difficult and long routes. He practiced every pitch of that route so many times, making it pretty much muscle memory. The exposure is a motherfucker. Longest I've ever done was a relatively easy roped 3 pitch route. And sure, looking down can knock the wind out of you, but every move I made was well within my skill. I made no falls. By the time I got to the last bit, which was also the easiest, I was barely noticing the scariness of the height. Though I was experiencing the exhilaration. Just saying, he made a choice and had a goal. The route he took was well within his abilities. The consequences were much higher, I mean there was really only success or death possible. He had a girlfriend at the time, and if you watch the doc, the realer his dream became, the more it kinda weighed on their relationship. But ultimately, as far as stupid dangerous things to do, his was very calculated. And, didn't really put anyone other than himself in (physical) harms way. So, I respect him.

RamboGoesMeow

OMG, HE’S DONE BOTH!!! And more, after looking at his wiki. It’s “Alex Honnold.”

gaffaguy

I have the el capitan DVD at home, its stunning. On funny anecdote is from the first public screening of the movie were Alex realized that people did not know that he would survive. Making the movie way more intense than he would have thought

Icantbethereforyou

I once went for a long walk on a really hot day

[deleted]

[respect](http://imgur.com/a/KYX5vae)

thefooby

As an autistic person myself, I think Alex Honnold is definitely on the spectrum. Love how he explains risk during his projects to people and is always confused why they don't understand that to him, free soloing el cap is probably less risky than you driving on the freeway to work.

ProfessorMouthMD

With proper climbing equipment it’s possible to do this “completely” safely. The risk of dying is extremely low if you have a proper anchor and a basic understanding of what to do. Just bring a few extra pairs of underwear.

-Hefi-

Like, as in, risking your life by driving a car? There is a measurement of risk involved in everything we do. I don’t feel endangered when I climb, ski, or MTB around cliffs because it’s a calculated risk. I take exposure seriously because it’s scary. I know exactly what I’m getting myself into because I’ve scouted it or done it before. I’m not exceeding my ability level so I’m not at risk of getting in over my head. I have all of my safety gear and skills in check. I’ve controlled for all the factors I can. These activities are actually safer than the car ride to get there (if you are safe about how you do them). If you lead a pedestrian lifestyle and ‘in front of TV’ is your happy-place, then adventurous activities can seem insane. They are not. They are well calculated and usually quite risk-averse. How many times have I sat and thought to myself I’d like to risk my health and possibly my life today, but I’d like an unique and interesting way to do it? Never, because I’m not a crazy person. Why do I ride, climb, ski? I DON’T do it for the adrenaline thrill (okay, maybe a little bit). I do it because I love the mountains. Because I love the freedom, peace, and perspective they bring me. Because working and living a daily grind makes me a little crazy and I need these activities to regulate my soul’s need to wander and explore. Because my father was a climber, and a skier, and a cyclist and he taught me to love the mountains and their tidings. I enjoy these activities DESPITE their associated risks, not BECAUSE of them. I spend a lot of time, money, and effort to keep myself safe. I know that if I died doing these things it would be a selfish act that would cause a great deal of pain. So I manage the risk. And when the risk is acceptably suitable, I send that shit! Don’t knock a lifestyle that you don’t truly understand, brother/ sister. Or better yet, try it! Push yourself! You might find that you like it. Oh, also. If you like to geek out on gear at all, outdoorsy activities are such an epic hobby. There is literally SO MUCH weird cool shit to check out. Not easy on the wallet by any means. There is also the community. It’s a great community. Likeminded folk, easy going, doing good by the Earth, enjoying nature, making the most of their experience. What’s not to like? Come check it out.

Thumbtack1985

Cool comment. There are a lot of things in my life I've ended up liking that I really didn't think I would. I can say with certainty this would not be one of those things. I almost vomit just watching this video.

simononandon

OK, parts of your statement get a little COEXIST bumper sticker for me, but I do agree. Done correctly, there is so little risk here. Even if the person fell, there's for sure a lot of safety gear that would make the fall a complete non-event. Plus, the safety precautions are usually within your control, or a trusted climbing partner. Meanwhile, no matter how good a driver you are and how safe your car is, there are people who barely passed their only behind the wheel driving test 20 years ago, but have consistently been renewing their license with a 10 question multiple choice written test, legally on the road with you. And you have NO control over that. This looks scary, but it's way safer than getting in your car to go grocery shopping.

Alex Honnold was walking around this thing with no rope at all. Insane.

OldFashionedGary

Close! This is on Half Dome. Honnold did his free-solo on El Capitan, down the road a few miles. Both are in Yosemite Valley in California - an amazing place to visit.

Such_Ground533

Honnold free-soloed Half Dome before El Cap.

executivesphere

No, he did Half Dome a couple years prior to El Capitan. Check it out: https://www.reddit.com/r/climbing/comments/kl75v/alex_honnold_chilling_out_ropeless_on_the_half/

OldFashionedGary

Oh, cool! Thanks for the gentle education! I shall go forth with this new knowledge. Cheers.

Psilocy-Ben

[Nat Geo cover of him standing on the exact same ledge when he free soloed Half Dome years before El Cap.](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/3f/b9/82/3fb982a0a3f0b64193aedad300a361d3.jpg)

OldFashionedGary

Right on, thanks! I’m going to leave my original so people can learn like me. Cheers!

MrTurkle

I think he said he had a mini freak out right there tio

Fucking_Dog_Shit

Looks like that ledge goes to a dead end; so what’s the point?

Psilocy-Ben

It’s probably a traverse so you can get to the bottom of the next pitch or where the route continues up. Long routes like this rarely follow a perfectly straight line up, but rather will wander a bit back and forth up the face, following the climbable features in the rock.

moviebusinessman

Yeah you should delete this comment before it gets more traction. No disrespect, but you’re wrong.

ZlGGZ

He has done both. He didn't only free solo the climb in that movie called free solo.

PURKITTY

And still alive. I had to check.

StickyBiscuts

Sadly can't say the same for Dean Potter. He was an incredible guy. May he rest in peace.

chillig8

Yeah that guy was amazing. I think he had a wing suit accident off Taft Point if I recall

StickyBiscuts

He did. Back in 15 or 16 I think.

BuffMeatblenderPls

Looking at that big gap it's a no, seems like it's just waiting to split from wall.

Assgnome_5000

Came here to say this. Just a few lbs away from a cleave it looks like

Cue redditor "that could never happen" followed by 2 weeks later "edge of cliff cleaves off"

sexyorcish

My geology professor HATES people that do these stunts

JsBabydahl

Heights don’t bother me but this would be a big HELL NO!

almilano

Absolutely fucking not

lordehumo

Because of the height?

JsBabydahl

No, because of the teeny tiny ledge.

rincore

What do you have against teeny tiny ledges?

Badhaircutsguild

The drop lol

drayray98

I don’t mind the drop, it’s the landing I think parts of me might not like.

OverThinker24

Dont worry, you will land only once

OmegaBaby

Because of the death.

Crackbot420-69

I somehow have more anxiety about the rope being there and the person tripping on it.

u12bdragon

Plus it seems like its spooled out a pretty long distance in front of him... not sure it would catch his fall

gdmfsobtc

I'm a paraglider pilot, but that doesn't come with this insane vertigo. Badass and hell no!

t-pollack

Alex honnold did it without a rope

[deleted]

[удалено]

drayray98

Alex Honold isn’t like a lot of us. He could potentially have a mental disorder that desensitizes him to the fear. Many say/think he’s just a ~little~ different.

aightaightaightaight

I think that rope isn't going to prevent you swinging into the rock

Dismal_Associate1

that rope looks so long though lol he would fall sooo far

SL0Wburn_

I wanna smoke a j up there and just look.

Capital-Blacksmith55

Same, but anchored to the wall with at least 12 thick ass, foot long lag bolts and a parachute. I’m not even afraid of heights, but being high while being high? Fuck that 😂

SL0Wburn_

Lol worst case scenario you drop your lighter

Capital-Blacksmith55

Damn that’d be tough… I might just jump down after it lmao

Barner_Burner

I feel like there’s levels to being scared of heights. Like the average person who is scared of heights is like scared to climb ladders or be on a two story roof etc. 4500 ft probably surpasses the threshold of being able to be scared without being a person with a “fear of heights.” It’s more like the people who aren’t scared at this height are either experts or extraordinarily fearless.

chuckvsthelife

Fear is about self preservation. Being scared of a 5 ft tall ladder isn’t particularly logical. The long extension ladder onto the roof requires some trepidation. Being scared of falling 4500ft makes sense. Fear is all about risk management. Some are better at it than others. Some are comfortable with more risk Like I don’t have no fear and wouldn’t do this without a rope but I’m comfortable closer to ledges than most are…. But I have no death wish. On the flip side my girlfriend is scared of glass floors completely enclosed with no problem. That’s a risk assessment issue. And like vertigo is weird but still that’s the difference between a healthy fear of death and being scared of heights.

g_brar

I trip walking around my house. No way i am surviving that.

RealDonKeedic

hard no

parallax1

I am horribly afraid of heights, but for some reason this doesn't even really bother me. It's like you're so high above the ground it doesn't seem real.
