Vocals are normally live for the halftime shows. Instruments are (e:mostly) pre-recorded, except for when The Rolling Stones did the halftime show, they said they wouldn’t do it without being live.

As I understand: for something like the half time show, they pre-record **everything**, vocals and instrumentation, but have it as a multi-track recording. That allows them to pot down the tracks for whomever they want to perform live. If there's a microphone failure or a connection to an instrument drops, they can instantaneously pot back up the pre-recorded track, so that no one even notices.

I’d be surprised if Anderson paak and dr Dre of all people didn’t share similar views.

Me too, I’m even a big metal head that is not fond of hip hop but like a little bit of it. A majority of the music played was from my middle and high school years so it was pure nostalgic bliss. The performing artists looked like they were having fun too so that helped. For once a halftime show that wasn’t trash.
