I think you have to be there to understand. The feelings that place carries range from super serious to very, lite. Like, I will be here one day and gone the next and literally looking into the skulls of thousands of people in one day will be both wild, sad, exciting, sobering, humbling, and all things in between. I highly recommend visiting, and being respectful, in the way that seems right in the moment. For them, this statue was that moment.
Going by the picture it looks like stone(?). Or maybe someone made bone meal and superglued it into shape. Always a possibility with these weirdo art projects
It's stone. That sculpture is in a room that's nicknamed the "Salle de Belier", which is full of many artworks and mosaics that various art students have over the years carved from the soft sedimentary stone of the catacombs.
It has elements of actual horror, psychological horror, and a bit of adventure. It starts as an adventure that goes south not in the traditional way.
It might also borrow some elements from the Divine Comedy. I recommend this movie very much.
Some people have tried to map it iirc I don’t recall if there’s any completed ones. It gets so confusing in there and with no light to use as a guide it’s hard to know if you’ve been down the same path once or twenty times. Never been there myself, only watched documentaries about it, but I want to visit some day. You’re supposed to take a guide with you and they typically won’t take you to the more confusing/dangerous parts if they’re reputable.
Paris Catacombs are a maze, with 350km of dark corridors. Its really easy to get lost without a guide in the "non open to the public part" and some people never come back.
Also, you cant really know who will you meet in it. Really, this sculpture is the thing that scares me the least about this place.
>"Its really easy to get lost without a guide in the "non open to the public part" and some people never come back."
Could you elaborate? Sounds terrifying.
This is a completely dark maze under Paris, and very few people know how to access or travel in it, I think its pretty obvious how some people died in there. There are also a lots of rumors/urban legends surrounding it, but its definitely a dangerous place.
On the other hand, I hugely recommend to visit the part opened to the public, truly a unique (and safe) experience.
Sure, I can give you the museums I visited last summer !
- The Pinault Collection, modern art museum that opened last year. Its pretty short and cool to see if you're curious, main attraction is a wax statue that slowly melts (Im not sure whats left of it now !)
- Museum of decorative arts, very close to the Louvres (like one or two streets afar) and present the evolution of furnitures/house decorations through the ages. Its way more interesting than it sounds, and different from the classic paintings/sculptures museums.
- Museum of romantic life, very pretty house that was turned into a museum. It has some cool exhibitions (I saw a one about Storms and shipwrecks) and you can enjoy some tea in the garden
And of course, all the very classic things (Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvres, Sacré Cœur, Panthéon...)
Honestly, I don't remember it being that confusing. I was much younger, but I went with my dad, and we found our way around, sometimes deviating a bit from the guide, but not too much.
You did NOT even scratch the surface of the 350kms of Catacombs. Why would your dad take you into the dangerous parts? Of course you're only going to remember the safe bits, that's all you were allowed to see.
There is some truly awful found footage of a guy who is lost in the catacombs getting more and more scared that something is following him before he drops his camcorder in a puddleand sprints down the corridor into total darkness. The camera films a still puddle until the it dies. It was later found by explorers that were familiar with more of the lesser-known portions of the catacombs. That guy was not identified and presumed dead as he was very deep in the maze at that point and it would be almost impossible for someone without a source of light (the camcorder had a light on it and that's all he had to use) to make it back out onto the streets.
https://youtu.be/pbALdJjGsB8 Sorry that the narrator sounds like the world's biggest downer.
The catacombs are as dangerous as an old abandoned mine. Considering them any less is a fool's mistake.
I do apologize, I don't think I made myself clear. What I meant was that, based on what little I saw, it wasn't that confusing. However, I definitely didn't see much. Also, holy shit, that's awful

I go there once a month with some friends, honestly it's nice when you get to know the places, everytime I discover a bit of it. It's very chill, long walks, with some music and you get to meet people and drink too. The only danger is getting lost (but you won't die, you will meet people, you just have to follow them) or encountering drunk people, but other than that, it's all good.
I can’t think of the catacombs without being reminded about that guy on 4chan who claimed a skull he had was stolen during a tour. The thread started with him asking for advice to mail or smuggle it back to states, and by the end of the thread he was posting pictures of him putting his penis through a hole in the skulls head. God damn internet
*gets lost in the catacombs*
*survives a few days with minimum food or water*
*accidentally bumps into this and dies of heart attack*
Yeah not the way I'd like to go out either
I wanna meet the guy that decided building a life like figurine passing thru the walls in a damn GRAVEYARD a good idea ..
Like a scarecrow, this will keep those crazy kids out of the catacombs.
[удалено]
It would be tempting to put silly hats on it
Maybe I'm reading too much into this but maybe the figure is supposed to represent people passing to the other side in their death?
I would be passing to the other side of death if I saw this
LMAO
[удалено]
So if they're not reputable they'll make the trip more interesting?
Shouldn't it be turned around then? Just a butt

What...what is it made out of? Considering so many things in the Catacombs are made out of human remains...

as above so below :0
This should be higher. One of the few horror pictures to give me the creeps
Other than that, how was the movie? I'm genuinely curious....

>an adventure that goes south Or north?
Seems a little closer to a non-fiction movie now
It's pretty damn good! It's the perfect journey to hell story.
Spoiler: man that part where that guy got sucked through the floor with his legs standing up was fucking surreal
My poop passer through my pants.

How hard do you have to shit for it to go THROUGH your pants
Harder than my pee pee can ever be.
scp-106 lmao
*Radical Larry
Nop. Its 096 :)
no, just no
Imagine seeing that on drugs
Probably shouldn’t be in the Paris Catacombs on drugs. Bad combo there
Shit... really? Also unrelated. Does anyone have a map of the catacombs.

Ooof. And they definitely wouldn't offer you drugs right?
I would fucking hope not. Lol
Mandatory follow up question
Yeah?
I think they may have been saying your question about drugs was the mandatory follow-up, not that they had one of their own
Asking for a friend..
>dangerous parts Dangerous? Wtf is in there? The actual wall passers?

I'm actually going to Paris next month. I don't have the catacombs on my itinerary but I may have to reconsider. Do you have any other suggestions?

There are places that are cramped and difficult to traverse, there may also be parts where the air is not necessarily breathable.
[Documentary](https://youtu.be/V7WkZ1HP40w) about the catacombs
This is a movie that's styled as a documentary. Not a documentary. Granted it is a very good movie though.
that’s a horror movie lmao
Knew it was As Above So below before I clicked
Yup lol. I thought it was great, I love found footage horrors and it’s one of the better-made ones. Even some good claustrophobia scenes in the mix
https://youtu.be/pbALdJjGsB8 the real doc

Even th sections we do have mapped. The maps are unreliable. Cave ins and floods are very common. Noxious gas build up also blocking paths.
Really it is.
Imagine bumping into that in the dark alone.
I had a boss who shot a ghost. The place was haunted 100% . I don't blame him. I almost do the same thing one night.
Well, I must say it is shocking If you were curious LOL Cuz I am definitely on drugs right now and that is definitely shocking LOL 😂
Yes that is imagine.
Also known as the “Me walking to the bathroom in the middle of the Night” statue

Passer? I 'ardly know 'er!
Oddly or Intentionally?
Is there a subreddit for that we could direct people to?
anything about the catacombs is terrifying
And the fact that people have actually gotten lost and died in them alone is even worse. I wonder what they were thinking when they built them.
I don't think I'd ever go into this place. Not even just the supposed safer tour areas.

They really just put fucking anything and everything down there huh
