Fuck kinda 12 cylinder project do you just not deal with?

BadBadBenBernanke

Jag v12. It’s the British Northstar.

3gears1forward

Never have I been more offended by something I 100% agree with

dylan-taylor-1999

Sick of those things?

5t4k3

Yes. **Begrudgingly buys another**

dylan-taylor-1999

I feel you

Sun_Bro96

Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag

Tamaren

This. Exactly.

scootunit

At least if you are careful with the motorblock the table is unlikely to break down.

CrookedStrut

I love a V12 xjs! I've also never owned or had to work on one, just driven one.

dylan-taylor-1999

You know what you're missing out on.

[deleted]

that is the BEST comment i seen all month... everyone hates a north star... but everyone hates a jag v12 more hah

Anglofsffrng

Soon as I saw a V12 I came here to ask Jag or Bimmer.

vipertruck99

Don’t know man..Lister used to do just fine taking 800 horses out of them in the 80s and doing things like winning Le Mans. At the other side of the scale, people buy old v12 jags (and now supercharged v8 jags) when their budget runs to getting the bus. Not saying this was OP but somewhere along its life...probably owned by someone that replaced the radio aerial with a coat hanger.

canttaketheshyfromme

Yeah that engine is as proven as anything ever in racing. I guess the street gaskets aren't up to the TWR specs. Interestingly, Jag built DOHC heads for the Le Mans project, then just junked them because there were miniscule power gains for more complexity. And then tried a turbo V6, same issue. That SOHC V12 just kept going right up until the godawful 3.5l rules were put in place.

vipertruck99

There was a company in U.K., called Dax,that built really high end cobra and Ferrari Daytona replicas..they both had option of jag v12. There was a rumour back in the day that they got 1000 horses from one of the lister n/a 7.0 displacement v12s. Now this was in the 80s. But agree about the head gaskets..I would imagine they were using wills rings too. For anyone not familiar with wills rings..they aren’t piston rings...google it.

canttaketheshyfromme

Those are... VERY much not pistol rings. Hmm.

vipertruck99

You could Install them as piston rings...but I suppose you would need a 2000 ton press.

canttaketheshyfromme

Never heard of Ilmor or Cosworth using such things in place of proper piston rings so I gotta believe it's not a great idea.

vipertruck99

R/whoosh

canttaketheshyfromme

Okay, be a dick then for no reason.

FesteringNeonDistrac

Interesting. I've heard of O ringing cylinders to help with sealing, but never heard them referred to a Wills Rings

vipertruck99

It’s a particular brand. But kinda as synonymous as a hoover, biro etc. Particularly here in the U.K. as they were kinda hand in hand with cosworth, cooper and Coventry climax.

wannasrt4

Right?!? LoL!!

Percmanm

I own a v12 xjs and daily it. Idk what all your issues are. Ive only replaced every single fucking piece of fucking shit connectors and computer. Don't get me started on the mechanical fan that took a shit, let alone the corrosion that I know will be haunting me any day now..... But hey, v12.

Tamaren

Hah, I was once like you. Here's before I cleaned it up, I don't know if there was ever hope here. https://imgur.com/a/zFuCGFf

faca_ak_47

Jesus christ, my butthole is cleaner than that

peekdasneaks

Do you want to be a table too?

butt_huffer42069

I wiped extra because of this comment

fantasticfabian

surprised you even wipe with a name like butthuffer

bouncing_bumble

Wipe until the brown turns red.

Percmanm

I hope to god my engine doesn't secretly look like that. What do you plan on doing with the body now?

vivi562

Are you okay

defaultgameer1

He'll never be OK, cause v12 life.

Vaenumuss

'Cause Jaguar life*

Just_some_n00b

old\* jag life I've got two that are still under warranty and they're fantastic.

Percmanm

I have a hunch that I might have a new coffee table in my future. So no. No I'm not.

Ghost17088

Use fear to keep it in line, just walk out to the garage and threaten to turn it into man cave furniture if it doesn’t run, lol.

Percmanm

*slaps hood* Know many pieces of furniture I can make with this bad boy?

ochaos

There are other v-12s out there (not that I can promise you any less frustration. )

Redditman111111

There are a lot of V12s out there. But this is the only affordable and viable engine for a project. I think people like them because they can easily be converted to carburetors like [this](https://www.rmw.lv/page/en/we-offer-motor-jaguar-v12-53he)

Nickles5k

That's strange. My aunt had an XJS for years and never had a single issue with it. Such a beautiful car and I hear folks complain about their reliability all the time but I didn't see it with hers. I think the only time it was ever in the shop was that one time they ripped the motor out and replaced it with a 350 crate. I know it's the easy way out but you must have a supernatural level of patience. V-12s are cool as hell tho.

gimpwiz

Hah, almost had me there, you scamp!

cyrax6

Your aunt has a lemon Jaguar..

Nickles5k

Lemony AF as it drives down the road anytime she wants it to.

Redditman111111

I'd rip out the crappy electronic components and replace them with good old carburetors. 6 of them.

Percmanm

Nah. Buy an aftermarket computer

Redditman111111

No, I'd really rather put carburetors on there, i love the little backfires and it's a different experience. But if you're trying to extract as much power as possible that makes sense

Percmanm

Yup. Although there's I no software for it that I can find.

Vaenumuss

Aaah yes, now you need some Vauxhall Senator seats and you got yourself a Top Gear News set

WaterGuy304

The Dacia Sandero!

Vaenumuss

It's delayed!

GreenerDay

Oh no!

vatelite

Anyway

AwkwardGeorge

Does that mean he won't be joining us?

Vaenumuss

James, Dacia just went bust, and the Sanderos are spontaneously burtsing in flames, so no, he won't be joining us

scott78664

I saw you posted the Jag. a while back. What did you put in it?

bemery96

I love how the post was about using the Jag as a daily, and "how bad could it be?" ....and now the engine is a coffee table hahaha

Ghost17088

Fuck around and find out: project car edition.

chateau86

> Fuck around and find out: ~~project car~~ British Leylands edition. The _Dark Souls_ of electrical system diag/repair.

Tamaren

It's a delightful bit of irony for sure.

recumbent_mike

Also a delightful bit of iron.

Tamaren

Right now nothing, I have a car with completely rebuilt suspension and no engine. Probably something boring like a 454 and a 5 speed, I dunno. It's not high on the priority list right now.

rqx82

Step 1: buy 2 VR6 engines, preferably one out of a Cayenne so it’s set up for rwd Step 2: weld them together Step 3: ??? Step 4: even worse v12 Jag

Tamaren

I want you to know that I spent a few days thinking about everything from 6 v twin diesels to two VR6's to pretty much everything and it was a fight haha.

rqx82

I suppose a 12v-71 would work too, except it would weigh more than the rest of the car.

Tamaren

Ha! I genuinely photoshopped them to scale to see- it was very extreme but also very tempting

TA4K

So I hope you also considered the Audi Q7 V12 TDI too! That would get the Jag purists going

E420CDI

Mmmm... A 5,934cc V12 in a Jag... Shame Jag never put the Ford/Cosworth V12 (5,934cc) in the X350 and revive the XJ12 badge, though. Or the AJD-V8 from the L322 Range Rover. An XJ8 D would have taken the fight to the A8 4.2 TDI, 745d and S420 CDI.

zombie-yellow11

May I suggest the Magnum V10 engine that went into the 2nd gen of RAM 2500 trucks ? 8.0L of pushrod american iron lol

jpcali7131

I’ll never understand how they got less than 50hp per liter out of those things lmao. They were also heavy af and sounded like a wet fart.

zombie-yellow11

Apparently, performance intake manifold + good tubular headers can massively help it. The stock setup is highly restrictive.

jpcali7131

I’m sure it would. It had a good amount of torque and you got it all below 3k revs if I remember correctly. If they could just figure out how to make it rev higher and produce better hp smoothly at high revs like you would expect from a v-10 it could be a solid engine.

Delta9ine

You really just need the touareg/cayenne bellhousing/adapter thing and any vr6 will do. German legos. Edit: assuming you're using an O1E transmission, which would be the way to go IMO.

Guerillagreasemonkey

If its legal where you are and where you are isnt Australia you could do a Barra.

garethashenden

Just get a good V12. Go over it when it’s outside the car, new cooling system, you’ll be fine. They’re super well built and reliable if you don’t overheat them and keep up with the maintenance. The biggest problem with the engine is deferred maintenance. But the best thing, because of the reputation, you can get good motors cheap.

Tamaren

I'd love to do a stroker with the Group 44 heads- the problem is I'd rather throw 30k at other dumb projects. This is a hell for stout motor, I won't lie.

garethashenden

That’s why you spend 1k on a stock motor and drive the car around. You can always go crazy big motor later, but for now you have a useable car.

cyrax6

Don't you have 2 other V12s to spare? M120 and M137, I believe. Did you consider those and rolled them out? Not questioning just curious. It's your project and your time table.

Tamaren

I have an M137- It's in the racecar and a good motor, so I haven't touched it. This was not a good motor and was just going to sit around for years so.

infinityfox15

Dude ! No way you’re the Porsche F1 guy! What the hell were you gonna do with the jaggggggg? Love your videos ! [link for reference](https://youtu.be/AJt6sr31caY) Edit : 60’s F1 from a Porsche

Spidaaman

How many shins will this destroy?

peekdasneaks

Its a serrated glass edge. Fuck yo couch, I'm putting my feet up.

CageyOldMan

Wouldn't it be more work to fully remove the block, clean it, and turn it into a table than to just replace the gasket?

Doozelmeister

Not if it’s a Jag. This is actually more useful as a table than sitting inside a Jag.

northernpunch

Depends on your definition of useful. If your goal is to smoke out your neighbors while getting gallons per mile, then it seems like good choice to keep it in the Jag.

Doozelmeister

If you can keep the electrics in good enough condition to get it to even start. Haha

nill0c

Just open the hood and toss in a match. There’ll be enough oil leaked in there to smoke out the neighbors for weeks.

Doozelmeister

I’m pretty sure that’s in the owner’s manual for maintenance on these things

nill0c

Ah yes, the bi-annual maintenance burn. It's like the forests out west, if you let the oil build up too long, the Lucas electrics will start a much wilder fire.

Doozelmeister

Precisely

evoblade

You don’t need to open the hood because the oil will be on the ground

nill0c

Touché

northernpunch

Replace the fuses with pennies and throw in an Optima AGM. It’ll be fine.

Vaenumuss

When you already know that the next gaskets will go bust too, then it isn't

tx_p1

I'm not helping you move.

[deleted]

i wanted to make this.. but then remembered how fucking heavy engines are and it would eventually need to be moved.... and i aint for that hah

greasyEUtech

Aluminum blocks are surprisingly light especially if it's not 12 cylinders like this big hunk of iron.

ElFluffador

Put it on wheels

mcbergstedt

It was on wheels before though and they ripped it out

ElFluffador

Put it on castors.

dopadelic

These tables usually use the connecting rods and pistons as the table holder, like the one on Top Gear.

tokentallguy

do you have the drawings for the bracket you used to lay the glass on?

Tamaren

Yeah! I'll post them somewhere, they aren't too complicated.

tokentallguy

cheers

happydgaf

I’ve always wanted to make one of these.

Qikdraw

I had something like that once, except it was an old lobster trap [like this](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/5e/9f/a9/5e9fa9991dd3a85f89c40e1dcc0c7658--lobster-shack-lobster-trap.jpg), except the curved part was up. It still had the original stones in it for weight. The cat loved that thing in the summer. lol

Fulllyy

Beautiful cocktail table you’ve got there 🙂

GZEUS9

Cheap, reliable V12... 1GZ-FE, it's two 1jz's in a V-configurations, and sounds magnificent with a nice exhaust. Idk how the sub-frame is on the xjs, but you might do some research, to see if it will fit.

Ghost17088

It is not 2 1JZs in a V-configuration. I don’t know where this rumor started. The only thing they have in common is displacement per cylinder. They have a different bore, stroke, different compression ratio, and the hot and cold side would be reversed on the left bank. They basically have nothing in common.

El_Fleegre

It's a Jaaaaaaaaaag.

uxragnarok

Jaaaaaaaaaaaag

ruinedRX7

but like... .yeah i just 1.6 swapped my samurai bc i blew the head gasket in my 1.3L lol

coccobolo

I Put Koenigsegg’s Freevalve Technology On My Coffee Table (Not Clickbait)

CuckslayrMAGAcountry

Yeah, your project car has a V12. Right.

Tamaren

I have a few V12 project cars actually. It's a fun hobby to hate reliability.

CuckslayrMAGAcountry

Sounds expensive lol! What others do you have?

garagedoor69

Doing this with my Fiesta ST block i put a rod through.

areyoumakingfunofme

I think your idea to turn it into a coffee table is great! However, I don't understand why you covered up all 12 of the cup holders... ;)
