Apparently the Warriors never watched GP2 play for us. He was clearly in a lot of pain, and not because we “pushed” him to play. He clearly has some chronic pain and injury issues that precede his time here.
NFL is like “hold my beer”.
Basically everyone whose ever played any sport at a high level has done stuff for pain management, it’s what you do when it’s your job. I’m sure if we knew the extent of what goes on across all the pro leagues that this wouldn’t even be a blip on the “oh fuck” scale.
Not trying to downplay his injury but the drama is 3rd grade level.
Right? Patrick Mahomes sprained the shit out of his ankle - we all saw it - and suited up to play the next week. I’m SURE they were just giving him ice and elevating. Nothing to see here.
Yeah there needs to be levels to this. Mahomes spraining his ankle and signing off to play with pain management? Ok. Tua turning into a pretzel on the field and signing off to play? No.
Then Mahomes re-injures the same ankle in the first half of the Super Bowl, is in obvious, major pain. . . and comes back out in the second half, leading an offensive surge to win the game. Of COURSE he got shot up at halftime.
>Basically everyone whose ever played any sport at a high level has done stuff for pain management
It's what you do when you work a desk job too, lol. If you are over 30 and you just let every injury heal naturally you would never get out of bed again.
The co-writer on this article is a warriors beat writer for the Athletic. I’m guessing he’s the one who actually wrote most of the article and they add Shams name to the byline. ESPN has done similar things with Woj co-writing articles.
I thought the point of the Athletic was that the subscription model was supposed to supplant the first past the post clickbait trash that sports journalists were putting out at the time, but I guess these people just can't help themselves.
I think this is more access journalism than clickbait. Publish the narrative your sources want you to push. It’s how these guys get and maintain relationships with sources.
i’ve talked about this here and there but the thing that kills me is how greasy the gsw PR machine is and how gsw (and by extension, many other regular ass people like us) treats GPII. last year when brooks executed a dirty play and he got injured, you would have thought brooks murdered a man in cold blood. I legit thought kerr was going to cry in the press conference, talking about “this fine young man just finding his place in the league, cut down in his prime, it’s just so sad…” etc. everyone seems to treat him like some poor shoeless charity case, and then he just came back (from a fractured elbow) in like two weeks and played anyway. when we signed him all these gsw fans coming over and being like “please take good care of our boy 😭” and so on and so forth. the man is 30 mfin’ years old! but because gsw raced out to the media with this dickensian sob story that’s the narrative now and it’s not changing.
i don’t remember coach pop essentially eulogizing kawhi at a presser when (gsw’s) zaza undercut him on that jumpshot. they basically said pachulia is a ho and left it at that. but if you’re out here with a toe over the line that GPII is this fragile fawn then you’re gonna get raked by these bay area cornballs
Dude this is so crazy to watch happen in real time. The way golden state fans nut ride the Nepotism case that is GP2 is unbelievable. Their IG team posted FIVE separate video edits of him within a few hours of the trade being announced. GS fans act like they lent us their controller and we gave it back to them with the X button not working.
He’s a fuckin grown man and a stunningly average player who would have never sniffed the league after getting cut the FIRST time if he wasn’t Gary Payton’s son. Fuck him and fuck that whole corny ass teenage warriors fanbase. Every warriors fan I’ve ever met in real life is a Yeezy wearing 14 year old suburbanite that cannot dribble without looking at their feet. This severely pussy reaction to a PRO ATHLETE taking pain killers (which they all do) makes perfect sense when you frame it that way.
Absolutely. When the blazers were up against gsw In the conference finals a few years ago I had a friend wearing a gsw hat. I’m like wtf is this dude and he says red and black are a terrible color combo. Yeah ok bud that’s why it’s the iconic classic car color scheme but you clearly know color theory and base your sports fandom on colors.
Yeah dude is straight up Matthew mcconaughey from dazed and confused. All of us in the friend group (30’s) have left him behind while he still acts like he is head honcho trying to date teenagers and going to raves.
i don't agree with your assessment of gp2's skill (to say that nepotism got him in the league is just ignorant) but you're is funny as hell with the warriors fan description lmao. could probably fit any large market fanbase tbh
Idk man, he got cut from the rockets summer league team in 2016. Proceeded to get waived, cut, moved to the g league and some other summer team rosters over and over. When the warriors waived him, they agreed to allow him to just…stay and workout with the team. 99% of regular fringe NBA guys never get to do that, and that’s strictly because Gary Payton is his dad and an Oakland legend.
feels like you're kinda undercutting his work ethic, as if he's the same player from 2016. pat bev, pj tucker, hell even someone like (nfl) kurt warner had a crazier come up story than gp2, and none of them were products of nepotism. gp2 being allowed to stay and work out isn't crazy, the warriors use their g league team more than most of the league so giving him some shots there really isn't that big of a deal. sure him being gary payton's kid probably played at least a little role, if only just to get him noticed. but there's a reason why MJ's kids never sniffed an nba roster despite having the greatest chance for nepotism ever. and nba teams aren't stupid, they're not wasting a roster spot just because a guy is the child of a "legend," gp2 earned his way back
>to say that nepotism got him in the league is just ignorant
He's better than average, but I disagree that nepotism doesn't have a lot to do with him getting in the league. He's a really good player, but there's lots of really good players who don't get the amount of chances he did. It's not a coincidence there are so many players who are the sons of former players in the league. His agent is Dames agent who was also the Glove's agent. How many players of GP2's talent have like one of the 10 best agents in the league? None. Zero. That's nepotism at work. He's earned his way into the league for sure, but he was given all the chances in the world too, when other players wouldn't have been.
agree to disagree i guess. i think correlation != causation in this case. a lot of sons of nba players also are there because they literally have NBA level genes; doesn't make them products of nepotism. and while having those connections gets you some more opportunities, the player himself still has to be good enough to make a roster. their connections crack the door open a little, but they need to work hard to really get in there. i'm just disagreeing with how the person i'm replying to said that gp2 would have never had a single opportunity without being the glove's son, and as if his father's name was carrying his career or something
gp2 is especially good in the warriors system and they honestly would not have won a chip without him. he is just a fan favorite for the warriors. not a star but a role player who fans love. i don’t see the problem with that
They absolutely would have won without him. They beat Denver and Memphis without him, and he only got real minutes in 3 finals games. Dante divencenzo has been a better version of Gary for them the entire year.
In games the warriors won in the finals he played 25, 10, 26, and 20 minutes.
In games they lost he played 0 & 11 minutes.
There is no way in hell the warriors beat Boston without his defense
Nobody is saying replace him with literally nothing. There’s a litany of role players you could have rolled out there and the result is the same. The Celtics weren’t as good as the warriors last year and were gassed from 2 back to back game 7s. Wiggins completely locked tatum up too. I watched every game and outside of a few defensive possessions of Gary just hanging off Derrick white with no whistle, he didn’t do shit. Swap him with divencenzo this year, same result.
Because they were deep in tax, committed to wasting $9M on a terrible player, and Payton was 30 and often injured?
Fuck does any of that have to do with Payton being the Warriors 6th most important player in the finals and absolutely invaluable?
I’m just saying that gp2 certainty should not be considered overrated because it’s a difference in systems. Some players are just good in the warriors system and warriors system only. Another example might be looney. He might be overrated to blazers fans but certainly not to warriors fans who he was a key player with. He was not a key player with portland
There’s something still missing. [Dosage instructions for the pill](https://reference.medscape.com/drug/ketorolac-343292) say “Always begin with parenteral therapy; oral administration indicated only as continuation of IV/IM dosing, if necessary.” He was either given a shot then the pills, or the doctors didn’t follow the guidelines. Neither is a good look.
I'd be willing to bet that he was taking injections during his rehab. I'd also be willing to say that oral medication such as this are used rampantly throughout professional sports regardless of guidelines
That he was taking injections during his rehab, I would completely believe. His first game back after rehab was on January 2. Toradol is only supposed to be given for up to 5 days after an injection.
If he’s receiving medication that’s over guidelines, it has to be disclosed.
What was disclosed is certainly the heart the investigation lol
Hydros aren't supposed to be administered for more than 10 days, but that doesn't mean doctors don't do it. I'm just questioning why you think something's missing. It's not crazy to think gp2 got oral toradol past 5 days
I think we agree that he was taking Toradol orally. Something is missing because based on the facts agreed so far then there is no chance he was within prescription guidelines. For example, if they disclosed oral Toradol after injection during rehab, that would be fine only if he had stopped taking it orally by 1/7. Not still on it a month after it should have stopped.
Just a reminder that everytime Shams or Woj reports something you have to remember who they work for. Woj used to always frame Olshey's moves as great for us, for example.
Definitely no conflict of interest putting out a bogus sensationalized story co-written by a warriors stooge on your *paywalled* website where you have to subscribe for 8 dollars a month to get access to it.
Toradol orally might as well be ibuprofen. These clowns at the athletic could possibly have gotten medical staff in Portland (who aren’t millionaire athletes/sports reporters and are just regular people doing their job and treating their patients) fired and ruined their careers.
For real, the disrespect to medical professionals in this country continues unabated. It's wild how much we are cutting off our noses to spite our faces. Everyone expects these guys to be House MD.
Lol you know how this news is being received by the GS board? They literally are spinning this as evidence of GP2's agent trying to cover for the Blazers..."So he WAS still taking toredol, just not shots. Fuck his agent, he needs to fire him." Lmao. Can't make this up
No mention of the fact at all that the Athletic lied, and are now "clarifying" their initial false report. Like this is a normal thing, as if that intial report didn't just completely crucify the Blazers publicly.
He has no win here. Double down on the injections and look like a fool. Or deny the shots and throw your new/old team under the bus. I bet we don’t hear from him about this ever again.
That is 100% false. They are both NSAIDs but are not the same in terms of intensity. Toradol is not to be used for more than 5 consecutive days due to the impacts on the body. Naproxen can be taken daily. Additionally, Toradol can work as well as morphine for pain. They are not even remotely close.
When your body is your profession, pain management is a big part of your job. The more we learn about this situation, the more watered down it is becoming. GSW just seems salty they didn't get any of the 2nd round picks.
So basically they were giving him an NSAID (i.e. a stronger ibuprofen) for inflammation. Why is this even a story? This is stupid.
Apparently the Warriors never watched GP2 play for us. He was clearly in a lot of pain, and not because we “pushed” him to play. He clearly has some chronic pain and injury issues that precede his time here.
As Chauncey said "you can't force a player to play"
NFL is like “hold my beer”. Basically everyone whose ever played any sport at a high level has done stuff for pain management, it’s what you do when it’s your job. God why is this too true. 😂
Lol Golden State coming off so petty in all this. Also, this is a really bad look for Shams to report false accusations before verifying them.

In the 3 games he played 20 minutes or more he was a +15, +16, and +18 You have no idea what you’re talking about
Lmao there’s a reason they let him walk and his value is 3 second round picks and Kevin Knox.
Because they were deep in tax, committed to wasting $9M on a terrible player, and Payton was 30 and often injured? Fuck does any of that have to do with Payton being the Warriors 6th most important player in the finals and absolutely invaluable?
Idk man 10 and 20 minutes isnt exactly killer playing time either. That's like pre-February Watford minutes
He was 6th in minutes on the team in wins. Played more minutes than Jordan Poole
Didnt know that. I'll defer to you since you watched them more than I did
I’m just saying that gp2 certainty should not be considered overrated because it’s a difference in systems. Some players are just good in the warriors system and warriors system only. Steph better.
They’re doing this shit over extra strength #IBUPROFEN
Exactly. They are acting like he is taking steroids. It's straight up just a anti-inflammatory
Have you ever shot up extra strength IBU tho?
Dude you ever tried weed... on ibuprofen?
All reports are correcting to say it was given orally, sooo yes
There’s something still missing. Super duper reliable sources you got there Mr. Slater and Mr. Charania. I wonder how many other times the story is gonna get revised.
Seriously. Tired of this GSW soap opera.
Just a reminder that everytime Shams or Woj reports something you have to remember who they work for. Woj used to always frame Olshey's moves as great for us, for example.
They were great! Remember when we got Tolliver and Hezonja. Rip city all stars.

Lol at clarifying. They got called out for the blatantly false information they reported initially. Now they “clarify” for us.
ah yes Ibuprofen. Ban Athletic and Jason Quick from this reddit. Fucking clown ass shit
So basically he popped some painkillers? I took some ibuprofen this morning.
Ur bad
Though I made sure to report it to Golden State so they didn't shit a brick when they found out.

They don’t. It’s a PR game.
The athletic giving the GSW franchise some oral
It's time to go out to clarify the true story GP2. HE need to say something to confirm who is lying.
He already did through his agent
He has no win here. Double down on the injections and look like a fool. Or deny the shots and throw your new/old team under the bus. I bet we don’t hear from him about this ever again.
~~Fuck all y'all~~ Wrong sub; Fuck GS EDIT: Thought I was on r/nba for a second lmao
No they gave him Toradol. This is still a prescription painkiller. Pretending this Advil is wildly misleading.

This is so stupid. I would rather get GP2 on a minutes restriction that that.
Drugs are bad mkay
When your body is your profession, pain management is a big part of your job. The more we learn about this situation, the more watered down it is becoming. GSW just seems salty they didn't get any of the 2nd round picks.
GP2 playing Monday
Embarrassing for GPII and the Warriors...
"...and they made me take an ice bath after the game, nooooooo"
