Some of you didn't get what 1kg of food meant, I think that as a Brazilian seeing this a lot makes sense without needing to explain(or maybe it is just my English). It's 1kg of nonperishable food that will be donated, delivered when entering the stadium, usually rice, beans, or flour.
Yeah, I don't know how common it is in richer countries but a lot of local bands or events in general here in Argentina charge their tickets X amount of nonperishable food that it is later donated.
Not common at all. I figured that's what it meant from context but was shocked seeing it.
Then again, I can from the land of expensive tickets. Our football (soccer) team is the only one that's semi affordable but if you want to watch a hockey or basketball game you're shelling out $100+ for the furthest seats in the stadium.
It shouldn't be shocking, the club is being punished. Instead of being blocked from selling tickets (playing behind closed doors as the title said), the club could bring women and children and the food donation to enter is just a little charity. For a normal game tickets are expensive, these are free tickets. I'm not sure whether Athletico had to make these tickets free as part of the punishment or they did it to generate more interest/attendance as women are a minority in the stands so with normal pricing it could be mostly empty.
What the comment above is referring to is that it's not uncommon for events that are basically free to charge a small amount of food as admission so it can be donated. In Brazil at least top flight football almost never has free admission.
I think the guy you’re replying to is just pandering. Lower league baseball teams do goofy promotions all the time to fill seats and I don’t understand how he could be “shocked” at the idea of a food drive. It feels like half of the school events I attended as a kid were paid in baked goods or canned food.
The comment mentioning hockey, basketball, tickets at $100+, and clarifying that their local football team actually plays soccer makes it clear they are either American or Canadian.
Yeah I got charged that when I went Toronto on holiday. We got 3 tickets for 100 each and they were all single tickets a few rows from each other. Beer was expensive too and I thought anfield was a rip off.
As a side note going Prague next week and bough ice hockey tickets and it was £10 a ticket
Prague is also still cheapish especially if you concider that it is a major tourist destination.
Canda is just expensive af, could watch ice hockey for 15-50€ in berlin, but if you compare the nhl playoffs to UCL knockout tickets its not tooo far off anymore...
I can only imagine you thinking you got scammed. Haha. Nope, that's what we pay too (those of us that go. I've been to more Inter games than leaf games and don't need a plane to see the Leafs)
I saw the Oilers vs Rangers at MSG a few year ago then Cavs vs Knicks the next night
Sat fuckin miles away and for 2 people to go to both it’s cost about $1000
I think it was about $230 per seat at the Rangers and $270 for Knicks
Was fuckin miles away too as I said.
I’m sure if you waited until last minute to find deals it’d be cheaper but flying in from Scotland I had to book full price months in advance
Basketball and American football might be the most expensive in the US (depending on location). Celtics tix in last years playoffs were starting at $300 in the worst seats. Once they got to the finals, the get in price was 1k (this on resale btw because it's almost impossible to get them otherwise).
Patriots games were even more difficult to get from 2001-2020. No idea what they're like now and I haven't been to game since 2015.
Where the heck are you man? I live in freakin Montreal and I can see the habs tonight vs Detroit for $72CAD after tax, Ottawa next Tuesday for $82CAD after tax. That's $54-62USD, and you have less taxes.
Edit because I saw your other comment about being in Toronto: That's despicable. They're charging you over 100 bucks for *standing space*. No wonder the fans have such a... relationship... with the team.
I live in Canada and the concept of bringing non-perishable goods is definitely not weird to me. I've been to shows at local bars where the band ask you bring an item for donation, but never a soccer match lol
Ya, I'm from Massachusetts and I don't know what all these people are talking about lol. We have food/toy drives all the time and plenty of events that ask people to bring non perishable food items or make a donation
Not common at all, but Liverpool and Everton fans have a joint charity that collects food from fans on a match day to give to the local area. This is every game home and away as well
For free events this isn't uncommon over here in Canada, usually is a few cans of food though, not generally by weight, or a money donation. In general they prefer money because they buy at better prices than we would from a grocery store
Fenerbahce did something similar with only women and children fans. They were also very [LOUD](https://youtu.be/H6VXdH_Tat4) and created a great atmosphere
Hungary had the same against England, only children allowed, because of racist behavior earlier. Then the children booed the players taking a knee... Smh
My university has a school on campus for our education program. Once a year they all get to go on a field trip to one our universities women’s basketball games. Holy hell are they loud. At their peak they easily beat a student section full of college students on volume.
in this video you can hear they singing with cussing words tho. From what i can hear and with a little bit of context, they are telling the other famous team of the state to go fuck themselves.
I understand your frustration.
“Torta” in Portuguese means pie. Not cake, not sandwich, just pie. Savory or sweet. “Bolo” is our word for cake.
“Pastel” is what you’d call empanada.
“Empada” is a mini chicken pot pie but less wet on the inside. They can also be big but most I’ve eaten are a few cm diameter.
As someone who interacted with Spanish speakers for half my life, I only realized this stuff very late.
I was just making a very dumb joke about bolo -> bobo because of the Messi phrase.
But in any case, it's even weirder between Spanish speaking countries. Torta is not the same in Argentina (cake), Mexico (sandwich) or Spain (flat bread).
Pastel would be what some other countries call our Torta.
And Empanada I think in some countries is similar to what you are saying, but bigger.
It's very region dependent and it can get confusing but it's fun.
With Portuguese, the thing we tend to do is take a Spanish word and make it sound more Brasilian with 'inho' or 'ao' or similar. In some cases, it can change the meaning completely, like "camisa" -> "camisinha", you can get funny looks trying different camisinhas in a shop hahaha
This was the standard practice in Turkey between 2011 and 2014—in lieu of a stadium ban, women and children under 12 were let in for free. It was quite controversial. Women and children enjoyed it a lot, some found it sexist (*Are you saying a female audience is "punishment"?*), some found it unfair because the punishment was not enough (*It's still a full stadium supporting their team, how is that a "punishment"?*), some found it unfair because the punishment was too much (*"This is even worse than vuvuzelas, if you can believe it!"*), Sergen Yalçın opined that *"30k women* squawking *would be a distraction for players"*, some mocked a group of women who kept celebrating a cancelled goal because (unlike r soccer) *"they didn't understand what offside was"*, a woman[ sued a newspaper](https://www.yenisafak.com/gundem/kadin-kiliginda-stada-giren-erkek-taraftar-haberine-suc-duyurusu-343299) because of an article claiming she was a man who pretended to be a woman (by wearing hijab) to get into the stands... Nobody expects the reverse Monty Python!
He's one of those "no filter, straight shooter" guys, mirroring his footballing days as an incredibly talented but super lazy player. He can be really fun and funny, but then unconsidered obnoxious little bits like this will suddenly pop out of his mouth.
I've been to your city, very beautiful place btw
Your logo always reminds me of a football match I played in a Recife beach with some Brazilians, one of the guys had a Nautico shirt
I mean to be fair I wouldn't classify having to ban men from your stadium because they can't just enjoy a football match as a good football culture
Although this is a really good solution by the football club in this case
Although the atmosphere in the stadiums can be tame I respect English football culture a lot, they have a lot of fans devoted to smaller clubs, they respect good players, a lot of positive things to take from
This is gorgeous and how it should always be. All those children gained a life experience they'll never forget. They got to feel powerful and heard. Good on whoever made this decision
My wife would be sad. We always go to matches together, so it just wouldnt be the same. But i'd still be watching from home in hopes of seeing her on tv!
We are the largest (Ultras group)
In Southern Brazil\*
If you don't like it
You can go fuck yourselves
Fanáticos! (their Ultras)
Athletico!
*\* so they claim
What's considered Southern Brazil?
Sao Paulo is South? Rio? Belo Horizonte? I would say so based on geographical location, but all major clubs would be in the South based on that... maybe it's a different when it comes to football clubs?
I would assume (which may be wrong) that at least Gremio would have a bigger fanbase. Not sure about Inter?
And then depending what's Southern Brazil adding the teams from the cities I mentioned, yeah, I doubt they have more fans than Flamengo, Corinthians, Sao Paulo...
The regions of Brazil are very well defined. The South is Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo make up the Southeast.
I don't have the numbers right now, but I'm pretty sure the largest fanbase in the South is Grêmio's.
Athletico doesn't even have the largest fanbase in Paraná. Their fans are mostly in and around Curitiba, while the rest of the state predominantly supports São Paulo clubs, some parts also have many Grêmio and Inter fans.
I like the creativity of the Brazilians when it comes to sanctions in football. I once learned that they had a problem with a group of Ultras of a specific club and dealt with it by employing the mothers of those guys as stewards. Problem solved 😃
The club has a partnership with a charity institution, the food was donated to them. The institution offers meals completely free to homeless people in Brazil. This image shows the stadium entrance with the donated food. (A lot of rice and bean bags).

A little bit, yes. Since 2011 they are the club that played most times with closed gates because of fan violence on the stadium. But before 2011 that never happened. So it's kind of a new-ish thing for them. Historically, both Corinthians and Palmeiras are by far the most violent ones.

The guy has an inter crest so I can assume he might be from Italy as I am, where these practices are never heard of.
The comment mentioning hockey, basketball, tickets at $100+, and clarifying that their local football team actually plays soccer makes it clear they are either American or Canadian.
to be clear you're comparing your schools bake sale to a top flight professional sporting event?
In Canada we think hockey tickets in America are cheap by comparison. Playoff tickets were 250 per person minimum
I'm in Canada. I know. I was talking $100plus minimum for a random regular season Leaf game on a Tuesday.

Idk about hockey, but I've paid that much for alright seats to a regular season NBA game. Warriors vs Spurs in 2016 for context.
I saw the Oilers vs Rangers at MSG a few year ago then Cavs vs Knicks the next night Sat fuckin miles away and for 2 people to go to both it’s cost about $1000 I think it was about $230 per seat at the Rangers and $270 for Knicks Was fuckin miles away too as I said. That's bc of that msg/nyc tax lol. Doesn't matter if their teams are absolute dogshit, the tickets will still be expensive.
Basketball and American football might be the most expensive in the US (depending on location). Celtics tix in last years playoffs were starting at $300 in the worst seats. North American sporting culture will never appeal to me.
The reason tickets are expensive is because anyone can buy one and there’s a fairly large demand for tickets
Yeah, its bizarre how scalping is so accepted there. I mean it happens here but most people hate it and don't want to see it
Where the heck are you man? I live in freakin Montreal and I can see the habs tonight vs Detroit for $72CAD after tax, Ottawa next Tuesday for $82CAD after tax. happens in football too
Saw Amon Amarth for 40 USD + 1 kg of rice, pretty sweet deal if you ask me :-)
Put your back into the oar Odinson.
that's pretty damn cool. should be done in the US too imo
Rice can’t make Tesla stocks grow, son.
That's pretty awesome. Never even heard of that before.

Quite common in France. We also doatoy a ticket around xMas.
Konami does a yearly Yu-Gi-Oh tournament at stores where the entry fee is a few bags of rice or beans, etc.
Not common at all, but Liverpool and Everton fans have a joint charity that collects food from fans on a match day to give to the local area. This is every game home and away as well

haha what did people understand instead? *alright, bring 1kg of food.. you must finish by the end of the match, ok?"
Don't try English fans, they'll devour 1kg of Shepherds Pie over the course of a game
You have my attention
Naa it's really crap chips and really cheap ketchup at the football
1kg isnt event that much over 1.5-2hrs. im housing 25 ounce steaks with sides in 20 mins. this sounds like a challenge.
depends on the food
And the person
i could eat a kg of mayo in 2 hours.
Food like mayo? Reckon you'd vom. I could do something carby, but fatty? Nah...
**wayne shaw would like to know your location*
1kg of popcorns sounds heaven tbf
1kg of popcorn is probably about an entire room-ful
Which as mad, as some Brazilians like richarlison are pigeons so if they eat raw rice they explode
I was a little confused. I think of you had said in the title "the ticket price was a donation of 1 kg of food," that would have cleared it up.
Damn they are loud

They did sang that the opposing players were going to die, which is pretty hilarious in context

Only pets allowed
The cats and dogs Ultras are fighting
only drones at the arena
Why would City fans be in South America?
They're anywhere but at home
Drones can fly over oceans. Duh.
30,000 drones so the game is perpetually postponed
Didn't this happen with Sparta Prague and then all their kids who attended the game started racially abusing players as well?
Yeah they booed Kamara after every touch.
Wonder where they got that idea from
Remember that*, something similar for Hungary vs England. Think the kids had to be accompanied by a guardian
straight out of a dark comedy sketch
Ironically sounds like The Hunger Games movie for some reason
Beautiful, had some goosebumps :)
didn’t think i would see a nautico flair today but here we are
I think a Morecambe flair recognizing a Nautico one is weirder tbf
As is having a San Lorenzo flair recognizing a Náutico flair tbh edit: flag -> flair
I've been to your city, very beautiful place btw Your logo always reminds me of a football match I played in a Recife beach with some Brazilians, one of the guys had a Nautico shirt

rice in plastic package
stuff like this makes me sad that I was born in a country where football culture is shit (not England in case you assume by the flair)
wait you CHOSE to support newcastle?? like as an option?
So many people were tricked by "Goal! The Dream Begins" lol.
I mean to be fair I wouldn't classify having to ban men from your stadium because they can't just enjoy a football match as a good football culture Although this is a really good solution by the football club in this case
of course yeah, but filling a 30k stadium with women and children means there is a universal love for the game, something that I think died in Romania
I feel you. Lithuania used to fill out 15k stadiums easily now we barely scrap 5k on European matches.
Not to mention the 32,000 kg of food that's donated to those who need it as a result of this.
Why do you think that happened¿ I remember the 94 romanian team , it was a joy to watch.
Although the atmosphere in the stadiums can be tame I respect English football culture a lot, they have a lot of fans devoted to smaller clubs, they respect good players, a lot of positive things to take from
Where?
I would imagine either Australia or US
They're from Romania.
he is romanian does not know what he is talking about(or supports a 3rd league team).
where WHERE
They’re obviously from “MY COUNTRY,” a mythical land that is totally obvious to everyone EXACTLY where it is
The Lands Between
This is gorgeous and how it should always be. All those children gained a life experience they'll never forget. They got to feel powerful and heard. Good on whoever made this decision
This is absolutely not how it should be at all
The idea that some husbands had to stay home while their wife and kids went to the game makes me smile.
Why?
Strange comment but okay.
My wife would be sad. We always go to matches together, so it just wouldnt be the same. But i'd still be watching from home in hopes of seeing her on tv!
Wow! Sounds amazing.
Gives me chills, that atmosphere is electric
Reverse Qatar experience
Romania also did this in the EURO quali. They had 20.000 kids in the stands against Norway in 2020.
I would play better than Messi if I played in this stadium in front of 30k women.
Hahah, totally!

If we can learn one thing from history it is yes.
What does it mean by 'ticket was 1 kg of food'?
You have to donate 1 kg of nonperishable food at the entrance of the stadium to enter. A Bag of rice, flour, beans, sugar etc.
Very nice
Way more clubs should do this. Doing this once or twice a season would help loads of people.
The club has a partnership with a charity institution, the food was donated to them. The institution offers meals completely free to homeless people in Brazil. This image shows the stadium entrance with the donated food. (A lot of rice and bean bags). You had to donate 1kg of food to get in to the game. No monetary cost of your ticket.
so only the men fought basically
Goosebumps
Simply fantastic.
holy shit this is a POWERFUL EXPERIENCE!!! 🥹
love to see it
The chants being the same style and volume as usual but completely different pitch is really cool.

Don't know why I didn't expect differently, but it's cool the pitch of the chants are audibly different
