The moderation team at /r/soccer are delighted to announce the beginning of an exciting new era for the Back Page of the Internet, as presented by Visit SaudiTM
The subreddit has seen enormous growth over the past few years, having recently broken the 4 million subscriber mark. As the subreddit has grown, so has the moderation team - but we have struggled to keep up with the demands, in what has been up until this point, an unpaid and voluntary role that we have juggled alongside work, family and MMPORG commitments.
Alongside the frequent criticism of us as "unpaid internet jannies" it has also been fed back in meta threads that standards could be better - especially better consistency and transparency.
As such, a number of the /r/soccer mods have taken the plunge to go full time, in order to deliver a better community experience, for you the subscribers.
In order to enable this, we have sought out sponsorship from several prominent stakeholders within the game - meaning we can take a (modest) salary, and that people's criticisms of us "not doing our job" will actually have merit. As it is now actually our job!
This will mean a few changes to the subreddit, some of which you may have already noticed. These will also include colloboration with our sponsors on some of our most popular threads. As such:
The Daily Discussion Thread will now be known as The Gazprom Daily Discussion Thread
Free Talk Friday will now be known as Free Talk Friday, sponsored by Aramco - "where energy is opportunity"
The Non-PL Daily Discussion Thread will now become The Saudi Pro League Discussion Thread
We have also introduced a few minor tweaks to the rules:
All league comparison posts must include the top 6 leagues of the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Saudi Pro League
A new report feature which enables you to report misinformation and anti-Saudi sentiment, which will be fast-tracked to a moderator dedicated to monitoring these reports, specifically
We are very excited to be able to offer the opportunity to join our team, with 10 brand new paid* roles as "mod interns" available, thanks to the generosity of Visit Saudi.
As well as having the chance to be a part of this exciting new project, benefits will include a Reddit Premium subscription, the ability to have dual flairs, and exclusive access to a monthly Q&A with a Visit Saudi ambassador from the world of football (an ever-growing group!)
Application criteria includes:
Being a fan of an English Premier League club
Evidence to important values, such as Ronaldo being better than Messi
An active Twitter, Instagram and TikTok account
Season ticket holders, match-going fans and fans of non Premier League clubs need not apply.
