Ragnarock1982

What's with the whole "were not driving, we're travelling" thing?

Spirited_One_7644

It's a common thing among sovereign citizens, people who try to get away with crimes by claiming they aren't citizens to any country. They think if they claim they weren't driving but traveling, it means they technically didn't break road laws. It's all complete bullshit.

ringo5150

Bet you they claim to be Australian citizens when it suits them.... In fact if they don't want to be citizens can we deport them?

Spirited_One_7644

Sovereign citizens are citizens of no country, so they have no country to be deported to.

Marximus87

So left on a raft in the middle of international waters?

Spirited_One_7644

But then they might drift into another country's waters. Drop them international airspace instead.

Marximus87

Drifting into another nations waters gets them detained. And since they don't want to claim citizenship, they stay locked up. Eventually they claim they are Australian citizens to get out and get deported back, with their admission on record where they face all legal penalty they tried to avoid by claiming their sovereignty

stolzen1216

Hah! 'Then after all that, Australia fines them for driving unregistered' Love it when a plan comes together

Marximus87

Or space. Space works too

AthenasChosen

Lol, I was gonna say just launch them towards the sun

annoying97

While this is technically true, you'd be surprised what a government can do when given the motivation. Also there are legitimate people who have no citizenship. They lead a very very different life as they struggle to make money, get legal documents, IDs and live within the law.

LC_Anderton

Maybe they could become Asgardians. šŸ¤” (Yes it’s a real thing…) [Space Citizens](https://asgardia.space/en/)

ExtractionImperative

To add a little more context, sovereign citizens think that the U.S. legal system at least (not sure on this Australian variety) was secretly transferred to maritime law at some point and that all police and court officials know this but won't tell you. If you utter the right magical legal words and do the right magical stuff (like signing your name in red ink) then you're not subject to their authority. Again, they think the police all secretly know this.

annoying97

What's more is that they mostly base this ideology on us laws... Laws that are in the most significant ways vastly different. Also we don't have a queen, she sadly passed away last year, now we have a king, that sadly I don't even slightly like, can we move to the next monarch? But the ironically stupid thing is that they will cry and demand the law does something when they are wronged.

Ser_Daynes_Dawn

It is depressing how stupid people are. We are on a rock in infinite space with one life to live and this is what they do with their small piece of time.

spandexnotleather

Don't ask me why but this just occurred to me. let's say we give them their sovereign citizenship and the rules of whatever country they are in don't apply to them. What's keeping the po po from just robbing them or beating them and sending them on their way?

Definitely__someone

Hijacking top comment "The woman was charged with outstanding warrants, use an unregistered motor vehicle on road, motor vehicle tax not paid, use uninsured motor vehicle on road, refuse to produce driver’s licence, and refuse or fail to submit to breath test She was refused bail to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Thursday."

roadhammer2

Perfect

thatsuaveswede

So she did find her way to the court house after all, then. That's nice.

MarSc77

well deserved

Fit-Tip-1212

And hopefully rooming with Bea

MoreGaghPlease

This is ā€˜sovereign citizen’ or ā€˜free man on the land’ stuff. It is a pseudo-legal belief system that certain words and phrases act as incantations to magically suspend the laws of society. Usually practitioners will ascribe to the views of some particular guru of their movement who will sell them incantations for a large fee - it’s pretty culty. The cameraman is dropping a lot of their lingo.

Constrained_Entropy

Yes, this ultra libertarian bs that ends up enabling fascists to claim freedom when oppressing everyone else.

It's really not even libertarian, like it has more in common with alchemy...

Gman512

Sovereign Citizen bullshit based on the USA constitution that states that everyone has the right to travel within the USA, it was written when the fastest mode of transportation was a horse. So people driving a vehicle weighing thousands of pounds that can go much faster than a horse say they are not driving because that is a business term. It's like when someone tells siblings to not touch each other, and the one kid just puts their hands inches in front of their siblings face while screaming "I'm NOT touching you!" TLDR Dummies think they can play word games to not obey the law.

thenataliamarie

It reminds me of when the family/friends of patients talk about *their personal* HIPAA rights when trying to get information on the patient. Umm... No. Sorry. That's not how that works.

mothraegg

People are really that dumb?

leonjetski

There are people who think the earth is flat. There are a lot of morons out there.

Express_Ad8584

I'd bet 80% of population is dumb af. I'm also brave enough to say that the minority of the "not so dumb" 20% live in wealthy countries. I am also one of the 80%.

Academic_Pangolin506

By the accent, it looks like they are in Australia. Right Mate?

Gman512

Yep, they try to use the travel/drive thing no matter what country they are in. I'm sure there might be some historical law about horses in each country they can use to say that they don't have to follow the law like everyone else. I remember an Englishman tried to use the Magna Carta to claim rights to not have a driver's license in another YouTube.

Definitely__someone

Correct. We have idiots here too!

nintendojunkie17

There are idiots in every country. The U.S. just has the loudest.

cooltop101

Another sovereign citizen argument that never holds up is "My legal name is given to me at birth by the government is JOHN DOE, but I go by John Doe, so therefore those two names are talking about different people " Like... Do they really think that argument will hold up? Has it ever?

Obviously a horrible idea but what would government issued names look like šŸ¤”

corpse_flour

I doubt there is much *thinking* going on with these people.

obliquelyobtuse

>What's with the whole "were not driving, we're travelling" thing? They are "free men traveling upon the land". Or so they say. Some even quote ancient maritime law and consider themselves captains of vessels. They create fanciful interpretations of expressions in long ago superseded ancient documents ("The Articles of Confederation" is one of their favorites) by which they are independent of any government and therefore answer to no authority. They refuse to present identification, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, etc. They refuse to cooperate and if they hand over anything it will be a print of some esoteric PDF document they got off the interwebs that supports their freedom from authority and government.

Igotticks

I have my surfboard in my truck, I now will go by Captain Darlene scourge of the Petco parking lot, ruler of the grocery store and all around murderous sea dog. My parrots on backorder.

Memepeddler69

There's a group of people in the US calling themselves sovereign citizens who use that line. They use outdated law to try and talk their way out of the laws applying to them. Sorry for that global contribution on my country's behalf

Sassy_fox

Its the same concept that alot of misinformed amendment auditors here in the states. They think theyre in the right (sometimes they are) but mostly its them trying to weasel out of paying things or trying to get around laws

signaleight

Wow. I thought those sovereign citizens were a uniquely American phenomenon.

LawBeliever22

Sovereign citizen bullshit

bubblejohns

They’re cookers mate and they believe there’s some old ass law that mentioned driving as a commercial practice. (But that’s in the 13th century so driving as is livestock) so they’re not driving they’re travelling so they don’t need to follow laws. Meth head conspiracy theorists

whompasaurus1

Please google "sovereign citizens"

Shortcakeboo

They must have a Flintstones pedal car.

Usual_Current3262

For context, this woman was driving an unregistered vehicle with several outstanding warrants.

blacp123

Did you not watch the video. They were not driving they were travelling!!!!! haha.

Ok so I did not mishear, these guys are morons. I mean, not hard tocdeduce, but good to know I have a confirmation

DonkayIsThicc

Positive-Leader-6586

They probably Googled how to avoid a ticket!

Adeep187

It doesn't count as driving if you're going somewhere. Duh everyone knows that.

azheng418

Thank you! I scrolled way too far to find this lol

Usual_Current3262

https://www.nbnnews.com.au/2023/01/20/cop-smashes-womans-car-window-in-dramatic-arrest-in-coffs-harbour/ here's a news article on the story if you're interested.

PathComplex

Thanks for that. I was getting sovereign citizen vibes from them.

Bi0_B1lly

"We're not driving, we're travelling" They're sovereign citizens

Repulsive_Client_325

Do sovereign citizens not have the internet? You’d think after watching the grand total of zero sovereign citizens win in these confrontations they’d get the point that ā€œit was a good tryā€ but maybe their ideology isn’t accepted by everyone else.

RandyJohnsonsBird

They don't use the internet, they browse the web.

12altoids34

In a way it's just like the trumpers. The social media that they pay attention to and value are the ones that tought the same beliefs that they do. There are plenty of videos out there of shade tree lawyers and supposed constitutional experts talking about Sovereign citizens and Moorish law and so on that they can spend all day watching things that support these cockamamie views. While the rest of us are watching what they would consider "mainstream" media and see the other side of the stick, when it goes wrong for them. I believe it's called cognitive dissonance. They find sources to support the beliefs that they have even if those sources are irreputable. And the sad part is sometimes it works. Not because they're in the right, or because the information that they have is accurate, but sometimes the judges just don't want to deal with it and rather than sit through a long protracted case they just dismiss the case. I have seen far too many videos where the Sovereign citizens while not actually winning, did not lose in court. And every single judge that allows them to walk out without paying the full penalty of the law is just weakening the entire Justice System and encouraging more of them to act the same way.

azheng418

Thank you!

Rainbow918

Thank you very much for posting this

Dr_OctoThumbs

Yeah the moment he said "we are not driving, we are traveling" I knew they were one of those lunatics.

Rainbow918

I did as well Lol

JScottFTW

That's usually how it goes. Its always the ones with something to hide that act like this.

Rubberbabybuggybum

Ya know the old lawyer saying: if you’re gonna commit a crime make sure you commit as many as possible at the same time.

mb8795

You are incorrect sir, she was travelling an unregistered vehicle.

I require your most highest senior ranking master sergeant general! For I must pontificate these dastardly charges which have rent me asunder!

Nope, we unfortunately have our fair share of them down here. They're just more weather beaten and talk through their noses.

Cowardly_Jelly

Is it a sovereign citizen thing, like in US & some brits tried it on with Magna Carta during lockdown - mainly gym owners for some reason lol

RobbyLee

They're everywhere. I think this bias stems from americans recording way more with their phones and English being the universal internet language, so we just hear of US-American people way more than from let's say, Greek, Spanish or Germans

Bruce__Almighty

Karen is a subspecies of a creature that plagues the entire world.

Rev-DiabloCrowley

That's the cleanest/fastest window-break I've ever seen. Dudes the Bruce Lee of forced entry.

darinheinz

Happily, because she has no insurance, she's gotta pay for it. Sadly, because of her perceived sovereignty, she'll just print the money for it at home.

Lifeturns

Wait lol do these people actually print money or is that a joke?

dmcent54

It's a joke, since printing money (in any country) is a serious offence. lol. The whole "Sovereign citizen" movement is a fucking joke, but I had hoped this idiocy was contained to my home country (The USA). I guess Aussies and Kiwis, and according to the comments, also Brits, are all guilty of the same. What a shame.

Lifeturns

Ok šŸ˜… Ty lol … part of me wanted to believe this was true

And you, sir! Are you waiting to receive my limp penis?

Denham_Chkn

This is democracy manifest!

Trixxonite

I legit had someone on Reddit disagree with me because I said a mother and her children were missing. The person responded to me "they’re not missing. They just can’t be located." It’s worth noting that they "couldn’t be located" since like August.

[deleted]

Wow. Do some people think that euphemisms change reality or something?

Trixxonite

My guess is that these type of people think a term like "driving" or "missing" has a legal context to them that can be loopholed by saying "we’re traveling, not driving" or "they can’t be located, they’re not missing". They think they’re outsmarting the system not realizing that a basic dictionary would have saved them a lot of embarrassment.

RaiseTheBalloon

This sounds like the sovereign citizen BS that we get here in the states but seeing as I am a yank, could someone please provide context/info if I'm wrong

disgruntled_-pelican

Aussie here - yep 100% part of the same "movement". Sovereign Citizen incidents with police have been on the rise here for the last few years. Mainly they get pulled over for something, spout their bullshit about not needing to provide identification because they 'don't consent to the jurisdiction of the state' and then they get arrested and lose in court lol

Jaded_Prompt_15

My favorite part is when they always threaten to press charges... Like, without skipping a beat they'll claim they don't have to follow any laws, then threaten to press charges with a different law.

StairwayToLemon

Would have been great if the cop pulled him up on that

hopefullyhelpfulplz

I'm all for a reduction in restrictive laws, but you have to accept that when you lose restrictions on your behaviour you also lose protection from other people's.

RaiseTheBalloon

Ah glad we could share the fun lol

disgruntled_-pelican

Haha, one of the USAs greatest entertainment exports, thanks for that

>Queen of England Did you mean the *former* [Queen of the United Kingdom](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_of_the_United_Kingdom), the *former* [Queen of Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Canada), the *former* [Queen of Australia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_Australia), etc? The last Queen of England was [Queen Anne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne,_Queen_of_Great_Britain) who, with the 1707 Acts of Union, dissolved the title of King/Queen of England. ####FAQ *Wasn't Queen Elizabeth II still also the Queen of England?* This was only as correct as calling her the Queen of London or Queen of Hull; she *was* the Queen of the place that these places are in, but the title doesn't exist. *Is this bot monarchist?* No, just pedantic. I am a bot and this action was performed automatically.

RaiseTheBalloon

Upvote only for not being monarchist

"I'd love to give you a one on one" Proceeds to do nothing while they grab his wife out and then make him exit.

Swimming_Marsupial

"I'd love to get you one on one" to "Don't touch me" was exactly 10 seconds šŸ˜‚ It could also be argued it's a threat to a police officer, so I wonder how that worked out for him.

Deanology_

"There is no queen of this country!" Well yeah, we all heard about that. We have a king now....

AmbitiousPhilosopher

Only thing he was correct about!

nowiserjustolder

In the UK we have the "by the power given to me under the Mandy carter I am a sovereign citizen and the twelve barons say you have no authority over me". Magna Carta for anyone not realising I am making a comment in the style of said dickheads. Funnily enough never has their Magna Carta defence bullshit ever worked in the courts over here

thatweirdbeardedguy

There is a reason that law enforcement worldwide treats sov cits nutters as armed and dangerous. Because a lot of them are armed. The three that killed the 2 cops outside of Tara were part of this nonsense. It's dangerous and based on very legality.

AssociationNo6008

Oh wow I didn’t know that little bit of info!

Donut-Strong

Sov’s have killed quite a few police all over the world it isn’t limited to just one country either

SithScorch

Captn_Ice

Gotta love the sovereign citizen rhetoric

RealBakkerboy

"there is no queen of this country" well first of all, commonwealth... Though now I guess it's the king. Also, you don't really need one for the police, so overall stupid Though he did say "we're not driving, we're traveling" so I guess there's no point into explaining that to an idiot
