Ravi Shankar - Bridges: The Best of

Performers:
Ravi Shankar (vocals, sitar, synthesizer); Hemangini Desai (vocals); Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (guitar); Ronu Mazumdar, Kailash Sharma (flute); Swapan Chowdhury, Markandeya Mishra (tabla); George Harrison, and many mmore

BRIDGES is a breathtaking overview of a mere three of the countless projects that sitar legend Ravi Shankar has worked on since his first appearance in the West in the 1930s. INSIDE THE KREMLIN, recorded in a Moscow in the throes of glasnost in 1988, features pieces that are simultaneously awe-inspiring and hypnotic. The more lighthearted tracks culled from TANA MANA include Shankar's good friend the late George Harrison among several other rock luminaries, while modern classical composer Philip Glass is a collaborator on the selections taken from PASSAGES

Reviews:
I think this is one of the best of the project of the ravi shankar. this sounds more jazz -rock fusion and it gives more sense of indianism. I think one should really pick this album who wanted to hear the sense of being oneself
Submitted by sainath (india)

This album is the best among many created by Pt Ravi Shankar. I know it may sound Greek to Western ears, however a basic understanding of Indian music will help in understanding this music.

Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar (3 CDs)

Ali Akbar Khan
The son of influential Hindustani musician Allaudin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan was one of the Eastern world's greatest musicians. A master of the sarod, a 25-stringed, lute-like, Indian instrument, Khan brought the Northern Indian classical music to the international stage. A five-time Grammy nominee, Khan was called, by Yehudi Menuhin, "an absolute genius, the greatest musician in the world." Tracing his ancestral roots to Mian Tansen, a 16th century musician in the court of Emperor Akbar, Khan began studying music at the age of three. Initially studying vocal music with his father, he studied drums with his uncle, Fakir Aftabuddin. Although he tried playing a wide variety of instruments, he felt most comfortable on the sarod. Training and practicing 18 hours a day, he slowly mastered the instrument. In 1936, he made his public debut during a concert in Allahabad. In the early '40s, Khan became a court musician for the Maharaja of Judhpur. He soon acquired the title "Ustad" (master musician).

In 1955, Khan accepted an invitation from Menuhin to perform in the United States. In addition to performing at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, he recorded the first Western album of Indian classical music and became the first Indian music on an American television when he appeared on Alistair Cooke's Omnibus. In 1971, Khan performed with his brother-in-law, Ravi Shankar, during George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh at Madison Square Garden. Khan received numerous awards including the President of India Award in 1963, the Padma Vibhusan in 1988, the Bill Graham Lifetime Achievement award in 1993, and the Asian Paints Shiromani Hall of Fame Award in 1997. He received the Kalidas Sanman from the Madya Pradesh Academy of Music And Fine Arts and became the first Indian musician to be awarded a MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" in 1991. Khan received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1997.

In 1956, Khan founded the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in Calcutta. Teaching in the United States since 1965, he opened the Ali Akbar College of Music in Berkeley, CA, two years later. (In 1968, the school moved to a new site in San Rafael.) Khan taught six classes a week for nine months a year. In the early '90s, the school opened branches in Fremont, CA, and Basel, Switzerland. The lengthy list of films featuring Khan's music includes Chetan Anand's Aandhiyan, Satyajit Ray's Devi, and Bernardo Bertolucci's Little Buddha. He received a Best Musician of the Year award for his soundtrack for the film Khudita Pashan.

Born on April 7, 1920, in Varanasi into an orthodox, well-off Brahmin family, Rabindra Shankar Chowdery's father, Shy??m Shankar, was employed as a diwan (minister) by the Maharajah of Jhalawar. By the age of 13, Ravi Shankar was going along on every tour of his brother Uday Shankar's Compaigne de Danse et Musique Hindou (Company of Hindu Dance and Music). At the All-Bengali Music Conference in December 1934, he met the multi-instrumentalist Allauddin Khan. Precisely when Allauddin Khan was born is uncertain. People hazard dates in the 1860s around 1862, but in later years he himself gave his age haphazardly. He would transform many musicians' lives, but he had an incalculable effect on Ali Akbar (his son), Annapurna Devi (his daughter), and Shankar himself.

Allauddin Khan joined Uday's troupe as its principal soloist around 1935-1936.

In 1938, Shankar gave up a potential career as a dancer and went to study with Allauddin Khan in Maihar. In 1939, he began giving public recitals and came out of training at the end of 1944. Until 1948, he based himself in Bombay and gave programs all over India. He toured and wrote for films and ballet. Around this time he began his recording career with a small session for HMV (India). Work for All India Radio followed; as music director from February 1949 to January 1956 in New Delhi. Concurrently, his international star was on the rise. In 1954, he performed in the Soviet Union. In 1956, he played his debut solo concerts in Western Europe and the U.S. Within a decade he would be the most famous Indian musician on the planet. Within two decades he would become probably the most famous Indian alive. His English-language autobiography, My Music, My Life (1969), is still one of the best general introductions to Hindustani music.

Shankar is not one-dimensional. Apart from pursuing a career as a classical performer, he has also experimented outside this field. For this reason he has attracted criticism from purists. Some of this, especially during the Beatles era, undoubtedly had an element of jealousy to it; some was certainly warranted, because Shankar did take many chances. In fact, that was one of the things that kept his music exciting. To use a cricketing image ??? baseball would be wholly inappropriate ??? Shankar's batting average has remained high throughout a long and illustrious career.

2. Raga Bilashkani Todi Ali Akbar Khan & Ravi Shankar
3. Raga Ramdas Malhar Ali Akbar Khan
4. Raga Malika Ali Akbar Khan

This 1973 release presents some precious collaborative music from the mid-'60s by India's greatest sitar player, Ravi Shankar, and master sarod player Ali Akbar Khan, for an insightful snapshot of Indian classical music in America during the 1960s. If it's possible to "jam" on the sitar and sarod, that's what these two masters do on the first two tracks while drone and tabla dance in and out of their soulful, somewhat improvised, vignette. "Ragas Ramdar Dalhar" takes its sweet time in unfolding, sprinkling glorious tones like raindrops before jumping into waves of ecstatic sound when the tabla furiously chimes in. "Raga Malika" is a steady, melodious piece, churning on with lively tabla and vibrant sarod. The CD's sound quality, while not up to late-1990s standards, is certainly free of crackling and distortion. Very listenable and a wonderful slice of history.

1. Alap And Jor In Raga Malkauns (missing)
2. Tala Sawari
3. Pahari Dhun

Of all the Ravi Shankar recordings I have heard so far, this one strikes me as one of the most emotional and deep. After several listens, the subtle beauty of Raga Malkauns: Alap almost pulls you into a trance, while the Jor speeds up slightly at the end to create a masterful combination. The Tala Sawari and Pahari Dhun are both livelier pieces, especially Pahari Dhun, which is based on folk melodies of India.
I have studied Indian music, and, still, I cannot profess that I know very much, for this is such a complex and beautiful music. North Indian classical music will continue to astound me with the complex rhythmic patterns and vast array of "scales" that are used. If you are interested at all in Indian music (North Indian, classical especially), you need to check this out, along with Ravi's other recordings. Read the descriptive liner notes and learn a little something as well..

4. Bhimpalasi
5. Sindhi-Bhairavi

This 1960s classic is a perfect introduction not only to Ravi Shankar's brilliant work on the sitar, but also to classical Indian music in general. Shankar offers brief, informative explanations of Indian ragas, scales, rhythms, song structures, and time signatures to set the stage for each spiritual piece he, Chatur Lal (tabla), and N.C. Mullick (tamboura) perform. Though Western listeners may not be able intellectually to pinpoint the subtle purposes of the various ragas' rhythms and movements, unconsciously listeners will feel them vividly. For instance, the plodding tension created by the 2/3/2/3 rhythm in "Máru-Bihág" well reflects the raga's poetic metaphor of separated, longing lovers. The loose, playful improvisation on "Sindhi-Bhairavi" mirrors the passionate romance of lovers. Overall, classical Indian music is diverse and complex, but The Sounds of India simplifies it beautifully for those interested in exploring it and its greatest ambassador.
"Philip Glass' collaboration with sitar player Ravi Shankar in Passages (1990) was not the minimalist composer's first experiment with non-Western sounds in music.
In Powaqqatsi (1987), the second of what would eventually become a trilogy of film scores done for director Godfrey Reggio, Glass incorporated musical elements drawn from African, Indian, and South American cultures.
In Passages, however, Glass doesn't simply manipulate non-Western music; he actually shares the compositional credit with a non-Western musician, Ravi Shankar. Each composer supplied the other with some basic thematic material (a melody or rhythmic pattern) from which were created three sections per composer.
These six sections were then crafted together into the final work. The collaboration mixes Shankar's and Glass's styles in interesting ways: for example, the opening Offering (based on Shankar's theme) utilizes a raga-based melody.
A raga is a collection of notes in Indian classical music, similar to the do-re-mi scale in Western music, except arranged according to a different mathematical pattern. The pattern influences how melodies are then constructed in Indian music. However, rather than being played on an Indian instrument, the raga melody is played by a saxophone (a Western instrument).
"Channels and Winds," the third section of the work, also makes use of vocal instrumentals, or tones that are sung by human voices but which lack text (lyrics). The fast, repetitive melodic fragments in the stringed instruments imitate the chaotic wandering of the winds while the sustained, stretched out melodies of the voices soar over the other instruments.
The constant repetition and gradual increase in volume builds tension as the listener wonders what the music is striving towards. The sixth section, "Prashanti," is even more programmatic (descriptive of nonmusical events): the harmony and unity of a people is gradually disrupted by chaos.
However, within the chaos, a singer entones a Vedic prayer requesting wisdom. The harmony and peacefulness return. Overall, Glass' background in minimalism comes strongly through in the sparse texture and repetitive phrasing that characterize this work, and Shankar's own compositional contribution makes Passages a work of world music that is a delight to hear."

New Age flute music plays softly as people file into an
apartment in West Los Angeles, remove their shoes
and seat themselves quietly on Oriental carpets on the
floor. A picture of a bearded guru in white robes sits at
the front of the room with a tiny offering of fresh flowers. There
are 14 students, and they have come here to learn to breathe.
Known as the Art of Living, this intensive breathing course will
last six days. The class has drawn people ranging in age from
their 20s to their 60s.
There is a builder, a businessman, a masseuse, an acupuncturist
and a Jacuzzi engineer. It includes some who are seeking relief
from asthma, chronic pain and depression and others who have
come because they heard about it from a friend. One man came
after seeing a flier at a Whole Foods market.
Students of the Art of Living program say the breathing technique
can bring greater awareness, a fuller and happier life, less stress,
greater mental focus, and a bevy of other health benefits. But
there is scant research so far to support those claims.
Now, a handful of doctors and psychiatrists in this country are
touting the benefits of the special breathing technique taught in
the Art of Living course to help relieve depression, post-traumatic
stress disorder, insomnia and anxiety.
One of those is Dr. Richard Brown, an associate professor of
clinical psychiatry at Columbia UniversityΓÇÖs College of Physicians
and Surgeons.
After Brown published a book in 1999 about holistic approaches
to depression, people from the Art of Living contacted him and
explained their program. Impressed with what he heard, Brown
later began recommending the program to many of his patients.
ΓÇ£Many of them were transformed,ΓÇ¥ Brown says. ΓÇ£I didnΓÇÖt expect
that.ΓÇ¥
Brown eventually took the Art of Living course, then started
teaching the program to, among others, fellow mental health
professionals in New York.
HeΓÇÖs also become the main spokesman in the medical community
for Art of Living.

INTRODUCTION
Behavioral or psychological factors such as
chronic stress may influence occurrence or progression
of cancer through several mechanisms:
1. Influence of stress on natural killer (NK) cells.
2. Poorer repair of damaged DNA.
3. Modulation of apoptosis.
4. Oxidative stress: aggravated by
psychological stress
Stress and natural killer cells
NK cells are the surveillance cells of immune
system, capable of destroying tumor cells and infected
cells. Stressors have been demonstrated to decrease
lymphocyte proliferation and reduce NK cell
cytotoxicity(1). Also, the cytokines- interferon ? and
interleukin -2 (IL-2) which otherwise enhance NK cells
and lymphocyte activated killer (LAK) cell activity get
suppressed due to stress(2). Smoking may play a
synergistic role (in conjunction with psychological
factors) and may further reduce NK cell cytotoxicity.
Suppression of NK cells and its functions may lead to
onset and/or progression of cancer.
Stress and DNA repair
Carcinogens induce tumors by damaging cellular
DNA(3). BodyΓÇÖs defense processes repair this damage
so as to prevent the occurrence of cancer. Ability to
repair damaged DNA, however is impaired in those
with depression(4). Some of the animal studies have
also suggested that stress may alter the DNA repair
processes(5). Thus, inability to repair DNA damage may
lead to cancer.
Stress modulates apoptosis
Apoptosis is a genetically programmed process,
which leads to alteration in cell structure and eventual
suicide. This process helps elimination of damaged
cells, which would otherwise induce carcinogenesis;
stress, however, impairs this process(6).
Oxidative stress: aggravated by psychosocial stress
Though oxygen is the most critical nutrient of
life, it is also the source of free radicals or reactive
oxygen species (ROS). ROS are generated either during
the normal metabolic processes of the body or due to
external agents such as radiation, ultraviolet light,
cigarette smoke, and environmental pollutants such
as asbestos, pesticides etc(7,8). ROS provide a state
called as oxidative stress, which is aggravated by
psychosocial stress(9), and leads to many diseases
including atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease
(CHD), rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer.
An antioxidant is a substance that scavenges
ROS. The body is equipped with antioxidant defense
in the form of glutathione and antioxidant enzymes
such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and
glutathione peroxidase. Balance between the levels of
ROS and antioxidant defense in the body would
determine as to whether a person remains healthy or
suffers from one of the chronic diseases including
cancer, as mentioned above.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that
psychologic stress could induce cancer and/or may
cause its progression through a variety of mechanisms
including suppression of immune system, faulty repair
of DNA, modulation of apoptosis and through
aggravation of oxidative stress.
Behavioral interventions
Behavioral interventions in the form of
relaxation techniques have been studied to see if these
could improve immune functions and/or antioxidant
defense and may have positive effects on patients
suffering from cancer. NK cell activity has been
demonstrated to increase by many researchers(10, 11)

Abstract :

Modern pace of life leaves little or no time to relax. Stress accumulates which lead to mental and physical disorders, including heart attacks, stomach ulcers, arthritis and even cancer, and many more.

Yoga, meditation and Pranayam (P) are well known methods to eliminate stress. Recently, Sudarshan Kriya (SK) has been introduced by H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

This is a rhythmic breathing process where 3 rhythms of breath are followed in a cyclic fashion. SK is preceded by Pranayam. To learn these processes one needs to undergo a 24 hour program called as Art of Living (AOL) spread over 6 days.

Studies carried out on SK & P reveal changes in electroencephalogram (EEG). Also one achieves optimum state of cognitive functions.

Resting EEG revealed increased beta wave activity consistent with alertness. During SK & P, alpha wave activity also increased consistent with relaxation. Thus a state of relaxed alertness could be achieved (1). Relaxation effect of SK & P was further confirmed on police trainees by the demonstration of fall in blood lactate. Antioxidant enzymes increased within 5 months of practice of SK & P (2).

Increase in natural killer (NK) cells was demonstrable both in normal
individuals and those suffering from cancer (3). Blood cholesterol decreased within 45 days of SK & P practices.

Introduction :

The human body is constantly under various kinds of stress and attack by reactive oxygen species (ROS) either generated by external agents or during normal metabolic process. ROS can damage cellular functions by damaging lipids, proteins and DNA in the cell [1, 2].

Increasing evidence suggests that chronic psychosocial stress may increase oxidative stress which in turn may contribute to the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases [3,4].

Cells can transduce stress into biochemical signals. Numerous cellular functions can be influenced by the presence of stress. Several genes and pathways of stress signalling molecules are found to be activated under conditions of stress.

Some of them being heat shock proteins, mitogen-activated protein kinases, stress-activated protein kinases and molecules involved in the oxidative stress pathway [5]. Meditation, SK and other techniques have been known to relieve stress by causing a relaxation response, a complex compensatory mechanism. SK is a breathing technique involving breathing in three different rhythms [6].

We have shown earlier [6] that SK helps lower blood lactate levels and provides better antioxidant defense. However, the biochemical effects and the signal transduction pathways of stress removal have not been studied.

In this study an attempt has been made to study the effect on long term practitioners of SK on genes involved in oxidative stress, DNA damage, cell cycle control, aging, apoptosis and several pathways of stress signalling molecules.

Executive Summary

Project Welcome Home Troops provides training in unique trauma relief practices to veterans and their families. While focused on veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, veterans from all eras will be trained. Training begins with a 16 hour workshop taught over 5-6 days. After the workshop, continuous follow-up support will be provided through weekly group sessions, private consultations and periodic residential weekend retreats.

The projectΓÇÖs trauma relief practices have been used successfully for 26 years. Initially taught as a stress-reduction program, the practices were adopted for trauma relief by the International Association for Human Values (IAHV). IAHV is a nonprofit United Nations chartered NGO and humanitarian organization that organizes volunteers for charitable work that often includes teaching trauma relief practices at disaster sites and in war zones. IAHV is the sponsor of Project
Welcome Home Troops.

Many applications of this training have demonstrated the effectiveness of the practices including:

police departments, United Nations forces, active-duty soldiers, prisoners and corrections officers, depression sufferers in Baghdad and New York after 9/11, and with disaster survivors.

Videos and personal accounts from participants can be seen on the website, www.pwht.org.

The most extensive use of this program for war-related trauma occurred in Kosovo where a large percentage of the population suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Thousands of traumatized military veterans and civilians in Kosovo have taken this program. Participants
report extraordinary relief from stress, trauma and PTSD.
An Urgent Need for Early Treatment
The longer treatment for PTSD is delayed, the worse the symptoms can become. Hundreds of
thousands of new veterans will develop PTSD, a debilitating condition that, if left untreated, can
lead to substance abuse, homelessness, severe depression/anxiety, and suicide. Unfortunately, the
initial response of returning OIF/OEF veterans is to not seek treatment. The most severe
symptoms may not show-up for 1 to 3 years after retuning home. Veteran aid organizations
are not seeing many new veterans until the severity of their problems becomes a crisis.
An Effective Program Available Now
Instructors from the International Association for Human Values, veterans, and psychiatrists and
psychologists skilled in the treatment of PTSD, have designed the Warrior Breath Workshop.
IAHV trauma-workshop leaders have been trained in combat PTSD and are volunteering to lead
workshops now. The effectiveness of any PTSD treatment program can be greatly enhanced by
including the Warrior Breath Workshop training.
The men and women who served in our military deserve our help. Multiple deployments and the
character of the war have left emotional scars that require multiple treatments to heal. The sooner
treatment can begin, the sooner veterans and their families can move past the negative effects of
PTSD. We must not allow this generationΓÇÖs veterans to add to the large number of veterans who
already make up half the homeless in this country. The Warrior Breath WorkshopΓÇÖs proven
technology will make a significant difference toward achieving that goal.

Art of Living targets people infected with HIV

Little is known locally about the specific mental issues
people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) face, but
depression and isolation are reported to be among them.

Now one local non-governmental organisation has
embarked on a project to promote stress-free lives for
infected individuals.

After presenting a successful project proposal to the
Ministry of Health, the Art of Living Foundation, which was
among 15 NGOs to receive World Bank funding, is
introducing scientifically proven breathing techniques to
persons living with the disease that will build their
physiology and resistance to the virus by oxygenating body
cells and increasing energy levels.

The foundation hopes to promote the use of yogic science
of breath for healthier living to build physical and mental
strength while infusing the spirit to fight back. Sudarshan
Kriya, an ancient breathing technique, is an integral part of
the course.

In a recent interview Vice-President of the foundation
Rolinda Kirton said they are targeting 360 persons with the
pilot project and are working with established HIV and
AIDS NGOs to recruit them..

ΓÇ£This course never ceases to amaze me. ItΓÇÖs always amazing, always something new.
This is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been, and I’ve grown to love this entire place and all the people in it.... I’m speechless as to how amazing this has been…” –Chris Beards, 16

ΓÇ£Without this program I would be stressed!ΓÇ¥ ΓÇôParis Cooper, 16

“The first two days I was in a rush to get back home, now I don’t even believe it—everyone in this room, I wish they could stay here with me. This week has been so much fun! …I never knew breathing could make you so relaxed like that. I was in a deep sleep and I was mad ‘cause they woke me up! This camp gave me good visions of myself; like I pictured myself being in the NBA. And that’s something to live for. Also, I’ve made good friends here—everybody’s my friend!” –Wesley Chambers, 17

Baltimore City

ΓÇ£I prayed to God for some release of my stress ΓÇô somehow I was stressing out really bad about family issues and stuff in my life and then all of a sudden, the YES! program popped up at my school and I joined the class. When I stopped taking the class, I realized that it had relieved a lot of my stress. I was more friendly to people around me, and more relaxed and more focused on my work instead of real tense and stressed. The class gave me a chance to think before acting. I wanted to go to Canada to further the program because I wanted that same feeling. I have never been out of Baltimore and I have never done anything like this beforeΓÇ¥ - Tashana Sawyers, 16

This is a 24-bit/44.1 kHz transcription using high-end analog equipment of a full-length performance by Ravi Shankar of Raga Jogeshwari, with alap, jor, jhala, and two gats in Tala Jhaptal (2+3+2+3 beats) and Tala Ektal (4+4+2+2), accompanied by Alla Rakha on tabla. It is one of at least three LPs featuring this pair of master musicians released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1979-1981, brilliantly recorded by Wolfgang Mitelhner and (in this case) produced by Dr. Rudolf Werner. I could only find one of those (Homage to Mahatma Gandhi) in print on CD.

This recording features a mature and seasoned Ravi Shankar, still at the height of his powers at age 59, but several years after becoming such a hit in the western world in the 1960s. He exhibits the finely nuanced rhythms and precise tonal control that have always been characteristic of his style, playing in these recordings with a calm assurance that reminds me of Sonny Rollins' recordings for RCA in the early 1960s.

The recording is ideal, with as much detail as one could want, nice balance, and no rough edges. Unlike many recordings of Indian classical music, the sitar and tabla are not squarely isolated in the two stereo channels, but emerge naturalistically out of the locations that they presumably occupied during the recording session. The LP transcribed for this torrent is in exemplary condition throughout.

I have recently uploaded several other 24-bit LP transcriptions of comparable quality, and will be doing more in the near future. You can find them by clicking on my user id. In the coming days, I will be uploading at least one other transcription of Indian classical music.

Equipment used for A/D conversion: Lyra Helikon phono cartridge, Linn LP12/Lingo turntable, Linn Ittok tonearm, Audioquest LeoPard tonearm cable, PS Audio PS2 preamplifier, Kimber PBJ interconnect, M-Audio Audiophile USB A/D converter.

01 - Alap [13:37]
02 - Jor [12:42]
03 - Gat I in Tala Jhaptal [17:07]
04 - Gat II in Tala Ektal [6:42]

NOTE: To the best of my knowledge, this recording is not currently available commercially. If you know otherwise, please let me know ASAP, as I do not wish any artists to be deprived of the royalties that they so richly deserve.
