	8 Minute Meditation - Quite Your Mind.Change Your Life ~ THEGURU

	Maybe you've heard that meditation can help you become
	more peaceful and feel safer in a complex, uncertain, and often
	harsh world. Perhaps there's another reason. Maybe you don't
	even know why.
	But you do know you'd like to learn to meditate. Only
	problem is, meditation sounds really complicated and extremely
	time-consuming. If only you could find a simple way to
	meditate that would suit your lifestyle yet provide the benefits
	you long for . ..
	Well, here's good news:You've found it! And all it takes is 8 minutes
	a day.

	8 Minute Meditation is the revolutionary new program that
	will change your life as easily as it fits into it. In just 8 minutes a
	day&mdash;the space between two television commercials&mdash;you can
	build a lifetime meditation practice. Time magazine calls it &quot;the
	most American form of meditation yet.&quot;

Book Description

Negotiations are a means of resolving differences between
people when imposed settlements are not possible. And because
so much of our work and personal lives involve resolving
differences, the ability to negotiate effectively is an essential life
skill. Almost everything we do involves some kind of negotiation. If
you think about it, youÆll realize that you negotiate all the time,
every day. You negotiated to get your new job and a raise. You
negotiated with coworkers about where to hold your last meeting.
You negotiated with your spouse and other loved ones about
where to take a vacation.

<span style="font-weight: bold;">Book Description</span><!--bold--><br />
Pocket Essentials is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. Freud was one of the giants of 20th century thought. His ideas have been hugely influential not only in psychology but in all the social sciences and the arts. This looks at Freud's life from his birth in 1856 to his death in Hampstead in 1939. Each of Freud's major works is summarized, his central ideas are explored, and controversies over his methods and practices are examined. Did he, as some recent critics have alleged, turn his back on evidence of genuine child abuse in 1890s Vienna and prefer instead to ascribe it to fantasy and wish fulfilment? What were the reasons behind his terrible quarrel with Carl Gustav Jung? Does his &quot;talking cure&quot; of psychoanalysis actually work?<br />

<span style="font-weight: bold;">Book Description</span><!--bold--><br />
<br />
It seems as though every day brings a new pill or potion claiming to restore mental<br />
alertness or improve memory. While many of these claims are based on factual information,<br />
many others are not. This encyclopedia of foods and drugs that are believed to improve<br />
mental performance contains information on nearly 400 nutrients, herbs, and drugs, ranging<br />
from ancient plant compounds to the latest pharmaceuticals. Entries are arranged by type<br />
of substance, such as foods, vitamins, minerals, spices, and medical drugs. Each entry<br />
contains information such as alternate names and forms, sources, results, side effects,<br />
precautions, and recommended dosage. Although readers are encouraged to consult with their<br />
doctors before diagnosing and treating themselves, this book provides crucial, factual,<br />
and unbiased information on the &quot;miracle drugs&quot; that many people believe can solve health<br />
problems from fatigue to Alzheimer's. Readers can discover for themselves the properties of<br />
each substance. A complete index allows for easy reference and help with alternate names,<br />
food and drug interactions, and symptoms.<br />

Each of us is born brilliant. Then we spend the rest of our lives having our brilliance buried by people, circumstances, and experiences. Eventually, we forget that we ever had genius and special talents, and our brilliance is locked away in a vault deep within. So we settle for who we are, instead of striving for who we were meant to be.<br />
<br />
Release Your Brilliance provides the combination to the vault where your brilliance is kept. After struggling for thirty-two years with disillusion, defeat, and despair, author Simon T. Bailey cracked the code to personal transformation, turning his life around and becoming a highly successful entrepreneur, respected family man and community leader. Using the metaphor that we're all diamonds in the rough, Simon shares the four key steps to cut and polish the gem that is you in order to reawaken your genius, reignite your internal light, and release your potential. He guides your transformation with interactive tools such as Personal Appraisal exercises, Diamond Polishing action steps, and true stories of Living Diamonds. Join the thousands of individuals and organizations worldwide who've sat down with Simon and learned to create lasting change and release their brilliance!<br />

<span style="font-weight: bold;">Review:</span><!--bold--><br />
Who needs anti-depressants, happy endings or chocolate pudding when you can wallow in a book like this? It's very hard to package what is basically a historical review of the philosophy of happiness into something you can read on the loo, tube and plane. Shorter takes us on a journey around the world -- from New York to India, South Africa to London -- and asks the question we all wrestle with -- how can we be perpetually happy? -- in a subtle and engaging way. And he gives us answers, without ever resorting to Oprah-esque platitudes or the empty sillinesses of the self-help brigade. His self-deprecating wit throws Toby Young into shadows of mediocrity; his taut and elegant prose augurs well for future books; and his empathy and humanity are inspirational. Suck it up, cynics! Here is the New British Dream in its multi-coloured, fragile glory!<br />
<br />
Review:<br />
I was won over by the accessbility of the writing and the endearing way in which the narrator contrasts the 'big' ideas with the challenges he faces in his own everyday existence. Laurence Shorter writes with assurance but is unafraid to to lay himself bare. I found by the end of reading the book it had managed to awake some pretty dormant positive attitudes and my outlook had noticeably brightened - a result that is surely worth a few quid of anyone's money?<br />

A biography of the Ramanujan describes how the natural genius of an unschooled Indian clerk came to the attention of a preeminent mathematician and the world.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Review</span><!--bold--><br />
From Publishers Weekly<br />
This moving and astonishing biography tells the improbable story of India-born Srinavasa Ramanujan Iyengar, self-taught mathematical prodigy. In 1913 Ramanujan, a 25-year-old clerk who had flunked out of two colleges, wrote a letter filled with startlingly original theorems to eminent English mathematician G. H. Hardy. Struck by the Indian's genius, Hardy, member of the Cambridge Apostles and an obsessive cricket aficionado, brought Ramanujan to England. Over the next five years, the vegetarian Brahmin who claimed his discoveries were revealed to him by a Hindu goddess turned out influential mathematical propositions. Cut off from his young Indian wife left at home and emotionally neglected by fatherly yet aloof Hardy, Ramanujan returned to India in 1919, depressed, sullen and quarrelsome; he died one year later of tuberculosis. Kanigel ( Apprentice to Genius ) gives nontechnical readers the flavor of how Ramanujan arrived at his mathematical ideas, which are used today in cosmology and computer science. BOMC featured alternate; QPB alternate.<br />
<br />
From Library Journal<br />
This biography traces the life of one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century, Ramanujan. This incredibly brilliant Indian mathematician, working alone in relative obscurity and lacking the usual academic credentials, could easily have passed unnoticed. However, with the help of a handful of friends and the ultimate support of renowned English mathematician G.H. Hardy, his work was brought to the attention of the world. When he died in 1920 at 32 he had become a folk-hero in his own country. He left a rich lode of original mathematics, which is still being mined today. This extremely well-researched and well-written biography is a &quot;must&quot; addition to any library collection.<br />

Review
An exploration of manÆs fascination with light

Here is the story of the greatest puzzle in our universe: what is light? Light Years explores our understanding of light from the spiritual interpretations of the Neolithic worshippers at Stonehenge, the Ancient Egyptians and the Mayans, through our first scientific attempts to understand light, and up to the present day. It looks over the shoulders of the great revolutionaries of light theoryûBacon, Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Einstein, and Feynmanûand traces the evolution of light drivenûdevices from the camera to the laser. This piece of realûlife scienceûfiction explains the mindûbending advances of quantum physics that put light at the heart of all matter and which could finally make time travel possibleûand change the world as we know it forever. Light Years and Time Travel is an engaging survey of everything we know of the universeÆs most enigmatic substance.

From the Inside Flap
According to Einstein, nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. Of all the mindûbending theories in modern physics, that, at least, seemed a rule the universeûlet alone mankindûcould never break.

But in 1994 Professor Gunter Nimtz sent a recording of MozartÆs 40th Symphony through a physical barrier at four times the speed of light. Once again, light had surprised and confounded those who sought to understand it.

Light Years and Time Travel tells the stories of the cultures and individuals determined to unlock the secrets of this mysterious force.

Neolithic man worshipped light at Stonehenge. The ancient Egyptians believed it was the sight of the great god Ra. The Greeks thought it a fire that pours from the eyes to illuminate all we behold. The revolutionary use of light in art by Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, Durer, and, more recently, the Impressionists has only furthered our awe of it.

From the first scientific grapplings with light by the ancient Chinese sage Mo Ti and the Greek philosopher Empedocles through the Renaissance and down to our own time, the revelations of the true nature of light are equally astounding. We have moved from BaconÆs studies of opticsûaccording to legend, he invented the first pair of glassesûand NewtonÆs dissection of light into the colors of the spectrum to Faraday and MaxwellÆs revelation of lightÆs basis in electricity and magnetism and quantum theoryÆs study of lightÆs strangest, most unexpected properties. Light is also the force behind our most stateûofûtheûart technology, such as lasers and optical computers.

Now, in this new millennium, we are realizing the possibility that light may allow us to send messages backward in time.

Even this is just the beginning of our understanding of lightÆs true power, but Brian CleggÆs odyssey through the wonder and study of light is no less compelling for it.

Review

This book is the first of a three-volume series written by the same author that aims to deliver a comprehensive and self-contained account of the vast field of solid-state physics. It goes far beyond most classic texts in the presentation of the properties of solids and experimentally observed phenomena, along with the basic concepts and theoretical methods used to understand them and the essential features of various experimental techniques.

The first volume deals with the atomic and magnetic structure and the dynamics of solids, the second with those electric properties that can be understood in terms of the one-particle approximation, and the third with the effects due to interactions and correlations among electrons.

This volume covers four major topics. After a brief history of solid-state physics, the introductory part presents the classification of condensed phases, describes the basic features of atoms as building blocks of solids, and analyzes how atoms bind together to form solids.

The second part deals with structural aspects. The symmetries of crystalline solids and their consequences are covered in detail.

Deviations from crystalline order either due to defects or in form of quasicrystalline or noncrystalline structures are also discussed. The third part is devoted to the theoretical description and experimental observation of lattice vibrations. Finally, magnetism due to localized magnetic moments is treated both phenomenologically and quantum mechanically.

The text provides ample material for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses. The book also serves as a valuable reference for researchers in the field of condensed matter physics.

Telecommunications networks are a critical component of the economic and social infrastructures in which we live. Each day, well over three billion people across the globe rely upon these systems, as their primary means of connecting to the world around them.<br />
<br />
Given the significant focus on securing critical infrastructure in recent years, Security for Telecommunications Networks creates a starting place for new researchers in the field of secure telecommunications networks. This volume not only discusses emerging threats, along with system vulnerability, but also presents the open questions posited by network evolution and defense mechanisms. This is one of the first books to discuss securing current and next generation telecommunications networks by the security community.<br />

                               UFOS SEEING IS BELIEVING
                              --------------------------

This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience -- from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 -- Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, March 1997 -- Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 -- Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by ... a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

Review

Einstein's gravity theory-his general theory of relativity-has served as the basis for a series of astonishing cosmological discoveries. But what if, nonetheless, Einstein got it wrong?
Since the 1930s, physicists have noticed an alarming discrepancy between the universe as we see it and the universe that Einstein's theory of relativity predicts. There just doesn't seem to be enough stuff out there for everything to hang together. Galaxies spin so fast that, based on the amount of visible matter in them, they ought to be flung to pieces, the same way a spinning yo-yo can break its string. Cosmologists tried to solve the problem by positing dark matter-a mysterious, invisible substance that surrounds galaxies, holding the visible matter in place-and particle physicists, attempting to identify the nature of the stuff, have undertaken a slew of experiments to detect it. So far, none have.
Now, John W. Moffat, a physicist at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada, offers a different solution to the problem. The capstone to a storybook career-one that began with a correspondence with Einstein and a conversation with Niels Bohr-Moffat's modified gravity theory, or MOG, can model the movements of the universe without recourse to dark matter, and his work challenging the constancy of the speed of light raises a stark challenge to the usual models of the first half-million years of the universe's existence.
This bold new work, presenting the entirety of Moffat's hypothesis to a general readership for the first time, promises to overturn everything we thought we knew about the origins and evolution of the universe.

While supporting his sick parents, Moffat spent his free time in the library, teaching himself in the course of a year both modern physics and the mathematics needed to work in it. Then, daringly, he wrote a letter to Einstein, identifying problems in one of the great man's papers. A correspondence was struck, but, because Moffat couldn't read German, he would take the letters to his barber to have them translated. The press caught wind of the story, which brought Moffat to the attention of Niels Bohr.With Einstein and Bohr's help, Moffat soon began a doctorate at Cambridge. His first bold stroke had taken him far, and would take him farther, ultimately to point out not just some of Einstein's small mistakes, but to revise his entire theory. Physicists have long known that something is wrong: Einstein's relativity and the theory of quantum mechanics are fundamentally incompatible, which has prompted the last twenty years' work in string theory. But Moffat has identified a bigger problem: not only does Einstein's theory not work in the world of the small, it doesn't seem to work in the world of the very large either.

About the Author
John Moffat is a professor emeritus of physics at the University of Toronto and an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Waterloo and a resident affiliate member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada. Moffat earned a doctorate in physics at the University of Cambridge.

From Publishers Weekly
Gravity has long been the problem child of physics, creating difficulties in finding a Theory of Everything. To complicate matters, most scientists believe that there is a mysterious, unidentified dark matter that makes up most of the universe, and that an equally baffling dark energy is pushing the universe apart. Moffat, an affiliate member of the cutting-edge Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, has developed a new theory that he calls Modified Gravity (MOG). Moffat says that both Newton and Einstein were wrong, and that Newton's gravitational constant is not constant across distances as large as galaxies and galaxy clusters. Scientists haven't been able to find dark matter because it doesn't exist: MOG values help account for rates of galaxy rotation. Perhaps more revolutionary is Moffat's claim that black holes don't exist either. His theory predicts a grey star, a massive object with many but not all of the properties of a black hole. Moffat's theory thus far has withstood many objections. If MOG stands the test of time, Moffat will have created a paradigm shift not seen since Newton. Illus. (Oct.)

Review
"At last John Moffat's book is out! The voice of dissent in a sad world where every young scientist is sucking up to the dusty establishment. If you don't want to hear the same old things repeated yet again this is just the book for you. A mind-boggling foray into the odd world of gravity, straight from the mouth of the master heresiarch." (Jooao Magueijo, Professor of Physics, London, UK )

Review
Penrose discusses physics and the basis of known physical laws. Lots of math.

Amazon.com Review
If Albert Einstein were alive, he would have a copy of The Road to Reality on his bookshelf. So would Isaac Newton. This may be the most complete mathematical explanation of the universe yet published, and Roger Penrose richly deserves the accolades he will receive for it. That said, let us be perfectly clear: this is not an easy book to read. The number of people in the world who can understand everything in it could probably take a taxi together to Penrose's next lecture. Still, math-friendly readers looking for a substantial and possibly even thrillingly difficult intellectual experience should pick up a copy (carefully--it's over a thousand pages long and weighs nearly 4 pounds) and start at the beginning, where Penrose sets out his purpose: to describe "the search for the underlying principles that govern the behavior of our universe." Beginning with the deceptively simple geometry of Pythagoras and the Greeks, Penrose guides readers through the fundamentals--the incontrovertible bricks that hold up the fanciful mathematical structures of later chapters. From such theoretical delights as complex-number calculus, Riemann surfaces, and Clifford bundles, the tour takes us quickly on to the nature of spacetime. The bulk of the book is then devoted to quantum physics, cosmological theories (including Penrose's favored ideas about string theory and universal inflation), and what we know about how the universe is held together. For physicists, mathematicians, and advanced students, The Road to Reality is an essential field guide to the universe. For enthusiastic amateurs, the book is a project to tackle a bit at a time, one with unimaginable intellectual rewards. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly
At first, this hefty new tome from Oxford physicist Penrose (The Emperor's NewMind) looks suspiciously like a textbook, complete with hundreds of diagrams and pages full of mathematical notation. On a closer reading, however, one discovers that the book is something entirely different and far more remarkable. Unlike a textbook, the purpose of which is purely to impart information, this volume is written to explore the beautiful and elegant connection between mathematics and the physical world. Penrose spends the first third of his book walking us through a seminar in high-level mathematics, but only so he can present modern physics on its own terms, without resorting to analogies or simplifications (as he explains in his preface, "in modern physics, one cannot avoid facing up to the subtleties of much sophisticated mathematics"). Those who work their way through these initial chapters will find themselves rewarded with a deep and sophisticated tour of the past and present of modern physics. Penrose transcends the constraints of the popular science genre with a unique combination of respect for the complexity of the material and respect for the abilities of his readers. This book sometimes begs comparison with Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, and while Penrose's vibrantly challenging volume deserves similar success, it will also likely lie unfinished on as many bookshelves as Hawking's. For those hardy readers willing to invest their time and mental energies, however, there are few books more deserving of the effort. 390 illus. (Feb. 24)

Review
German cuisine means much more these days than just sausage, sauerkraut and beer. Rather it reflects todayÆs Germany with its distinctive melange of modernity and tradition. This collection of German recipes embodies this fusion of old and new with a fresh, modern twist to traditional recipes for todayÆs taste-, quality-, and health-conscious cooks.

Each recipe uses top-quality imported German ingredients that are available in North America. World-class Bavarian cheeses and Black Forest hams, all kinds of pickled vegetables, gorgeous cookies, cakes and confections, hearty whole grain breads, legendary beers and a wide selection of seasonal fare are just some of the genuine German specialties available in retail stores and on the Internet.

Review

 From the reviews:

"The author seems to be of the [Fred] Hoyle school of independent thinkers, which is no bad thing, and if a different perspective on a topic might shed some illumination, then having a copy in the departmental library may be a worthwhile investment." (The Observatory, 2002)

Product Description

For a quantitative understanding of the physics of the universe - from the solar system through the milky way to clusters of galaxies all the way to cosmology - these edited lecture notes are perhaps among the most concise and also among the most critical ones: Astrophysics has not yet stood the redundancy test of laboratory physics, hence should be aware of early interpretations. Special chapters are devoted to magnetic and radiation processes, supernovae, disks, black-hole candidacy, bipolar flows, cosmic rays, gamma-ray bursts, image distortions, and special sources. At the same time, planet earth is viewed as the arena for life, with plants and animals having evolved to homo sapiens during cosmic time. -- This text is unique in covering the basic qualitative and quantitative tools, formulae as well as numbers, needed for the precise interpretation of frontline phenomena. The author compares mainstream interpretations with new and even controversial ones he wishes to emphasize.

The second edition includes numerous updates throughout the book and, in addition, it contains a list of alternative explanations to astrophysical findings that can be seen as a serious testing ground for young scientists.

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This advanced NLP book builds on the foundation established in Heart of the Mind, by the Andreases, and Using Your Brainùfor a CHANGE, by Richard Bandler. Presented in "live seminar" format, this book offers rich information and specific examples of how to work successfully in helping people change. Specific methods are presented for changing habits, for congruently finally saying "no" when that is appropriate, eliminating compulsions, building self-concept, becoming more self-referenced and less vulnerable to others' opinions, utilization of timelines and time frames for planning and motivation, shifting the relative importance of criteria/values, and much more.

From the Author

(from the Introduction) We have presented the patterns in this book as explicitly and systematically as we can, in order to make it easy for you to learn them. Like a road map, these directions will only be useful if you take the time to actually follow them, and use your senses to experience the actual territory that they lead you to. We have presented them in great detail, and warned you about all the mistakes we and others have made with them, to make it hard for you to use them inappropriately. Once you have taken the time to learn these methods thoroughly, you can become more flexible and artistic in utilizing them with clients, with confidence that your behavior will remain systematic and effective.
Many people accuse NLP of being technological, with the implication that it is cold and unfeeling. However, those same people are happy to use the technology of central heating to help their houses warm, instead of the smoky fire used by their ancestors. They also use antibiotics and immunization to keep their children healthy without thinking about the incredibly complex technology behind it.
Months of warm feelings won't help a child who is a poor speller, or release him from the resulting ridicule, feelings of failure and self-criticism; an hour or two of NLP technology can teach him how to spell and provide him with a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. All the empathy in the world won't help a phobic; a half-hour of NLP technology can release her from a life punctuated with terror. Holding the hand of a dying friend may ease his passing; appropriate medical technology may save his life.

Of course any technology can be misused by delivering it in a cold, unfeeling way. We have listened to nurses whose "bedside manner" must have been learned from a tape recording of Lucretia Borgia, and therapists who speak in the tonality of Adolph Hitler. This book is more technological than most, because we know that detailed technology gets results, and that the "coldest" technology can be delivered with humanity and respect.
We learned much of the material in this book directly from Richard Bandler in a small seminar in early 1984. In that seminar he taught us a number of specific patterns, most of which are included in this book. But more important, he demonstrated the tools of the trade: how to use fine distinctions, specific questions, and procedures for further exploration and discovery. Richard also often demonstrated without explaining, described events cryptically, or dropped tantalizing hints. Although this was often frustrating, it also whetted our curiosity and motivated us to explore further. Since then, we have been using the tools he taught us to follow up some of those tantalizing hints and develop specific patterns in sufficient detail that they can be more easily learned by others.
For over three years now we have been teaching this material in our Advanced Submodality Trainings. Much of this book has been edited from transcripts drawn from many different trainings. These segments have been woven together and presented as if they occurred in one training, both for your ease in reading, and to retain the conversational style and format of the live teaching. Other parts we have written without referring to tapes of transcripts. Most of the time we do not indicate which of us is speaking; after months of editing by both of us, we often don't know, and it doesn't matter anyway. We do identify ourselves in transcripts of demonstrations which are also available on videotape.
In many ways, this book is a continuation of Richard Bandler's book, Using Your Brain--for a CHANGE, which we edited two years ago. As we were writing this book we have presupposed that readers will have read Using Your Brain, and will have a background understanding of basic submodality patterns. If you don't have that background, we strongly recommend that you acquire it before reading this book, in order to get full value from the patterns in this book.
We also strongly recommend that you read the chapters in this book in order. Sequence, or syntax, of experience is a major organizing principle in NLP, and the sequence of chapters in this book has been carefully thought out. Many of the later chapters presuppose that ;you have already read and understood earlier chapters. If you read a later chapter without the background provided by earlier chapters and Using Your Brain, it will be more difficult for you to understand the material completely and thoroughly.
There is an old joke about the human brain being "the only self-maintaining all-purpose computer that can be created by unskilled labor." However, it's also a computer without an owner's manual. The patterns developed by NLP are essentially human "software"--ways to organize your experience that can be learned, a cultural/social resource, like all the other products of human creativity and inventiveness. The material we present here explores the mental patterning that makes us who we are, and provide tools that you can use to quickly change how you respond. This book joins over 30 NLP books that have been published since the first one was published by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in 1975. And this is only the beginning . . .

Description
Relativistic cosmology has in recent years become one of the most active and exciting branches of research, often considered to be today where particle physics was forty years ago, with major discoveries just waiting to happen. Consequently the part most affected by this second edition is the last part on cosmology. But there are additions, improvements, and new exercises throughout. _ The book's basic purpose is unchanged. It is to make relativity come alive conceptually, and to display the grand theoretical edifice that it is, with consequences in many branches of physics. The emphasis is on the foundations, on the logical subtleties, and on presenting the necessary mathematics - including differential geometry and tensors - but always as late and in as palatable a form as possible. Aided by over 300 exercises, the book seeks to promote an in-depth understanding, and the confidence to tackle any basic problem in relativity.

Review
'Rindler's writing is elegant, yet compact and logically precise. ... this book should be on the shelf of all who are intrigued by the startling modern advances in our understanding of space and time. ' American Journal of Physics

'An outstanding introductory treatise by one of the masters of the subject, this book belongs to the shelves of every physics library.' Foundations of Physics

'... a self-contained and balanced work. Every sentence hits home, and no word is superfluous. Each chapter ends with a set of well-chosen and instructive exercises. ... it exposes the reader to the physics with inspiring and occasionally surprising arguments. ... a totally successful textbook and a must for all who study special and general relativity.' Physik Journal

'... a first-class presentation of the intellectual glory of the first century of relativity.' Times Higher Education Supplement

Grade 7 UpùThis set aims "to introduce readers, in particular U.S. students, to contemporary foodstuffs, ways of eating, and typical cookery in almost every country in the world." It includes 198 alphabetically listed nation-states and "nationalities without states." Each one is shown on a map, and its history, geography, and ethnic or religious makeup is briefly introduced. An average of five or six recipes is provided per entry, with exceptions for the largest and smallest nations. When a recipe includes ingredients not available in the U.S., substitutions are suggested. A secondary objective is to allow students to compare dishes, such as yogurt, rice, and pasta, which are common in various countries. Sidebars offering information on topics like the African staple manioc porridge, and pen-and-ink illustrations of unusual foodstuffs, dot the text. Each volume has its own table of contents. The first volume includes lists of countries and regions and recipes by region and a brief glossary. A comprehensive set index concludes each volume. While the dishes are not especially complicated to make, they do assume familiarity with basic cooking techniques. The only safety advisory pertains to handling fresh chili peppers. However, the choices are appropriate and are accurately described, and the background material is reliable. This is a useful resource for multidisciplinary studies involving the social sciences, language arts, and consumer education, as well as general interest. Bon appetit!ùJoyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS

From Booklist
We've all had the assignment: make a dish from another country and bring it to school for the cultural potluck. The recipes in The World Cookbook for Students now make that assignment a piece of cake! In five volumes, hundreds of recipes representing nearly 200 countries and regions of the world can be found. Moreover, the authors go beyond listing recipes and offer students a glimpse of different ways of eating and preparing foods. Arranged alphabetically, each country entry contains brief historical and geographic comments, lists of typical foods and dishes served, and a description of how and when foods are eaten. For example, the entry for Benin lists foodstuffs like goat, sorghum, gnembue (a vegetable), mangoes, and wangash (a tofulike cheese) and dishes such as akassa (cornmeal wrapped in leaves) and ago glain (a special-occasion stew). The recipes in each entry typically include an appetizer, soup, main dish, dessert, and festival dish. At least one vegetarian dish is in each entry as well. Although five recipes are the norm, more are provided for the five "great cuisines" of the world. Each recipe includes when the dish is typically served, a list of ingredients in U.S. standard measurements, and directions. The recipes are designed for four people based on one-half pound of meat and vegetables per person. As for the U.S. recipes, pancakes, relish, meatloaf, fried chicken, ice cream, and brownies are represented. Unfortunately, there are no photos or other visual guides to assist students with the preparation or to demonstrate the final product. This is disappointing considering the number of unusual ingredients and dishes included in the set. Several black-and-white sketches, found throughout the volumes, illustrate a food item or utensil. Volumes begin with a list of countries and the included recipes, but recipe names are not indexed nor are some key termsùrice, for example. Although volume 5 contains an extensive bibliography, including numerous Web sites, the glossary is paltry, defining only 12 terms. Overall, the recipes and background information on countries are informative and creative, but the set lacks a much-needed visual component combined with a strong index and glossary. Review
ôThis work offers a useful, basic introduction to the cuisines of the world, including many smaller countries and nationalities not found in other reference titles. The recipes, ranging from simple dishes such as soups and salads to more complicated main entrees and desserts, can require some previous cooking skills on the part of the user, but they do give a nice taste of each countrys culinary riches. Recommended for high school and public libraries where there is sufficient demand for reference material on the subject.öûLibrary Journal
ôThis is an absolutely fun set of books not only for students but for anyone who likes to cook....This set is highly recommended for all medium-sized libraries or larger.öûAmerican Reference Books Annual
ôAs a reference resource this five volume set is excellent value not only for students of cookery but also for anthropologists or anyone undertaking a study of the society and social practices of people around the globe. It is a fascinating insight into the eating habits, daily life and practices of the world's people.öûReference Reviews
ôWhile this is designed for an older age group, elementary teachers will be delighted to know of its existence when their students study countries of the world and what people in those countries eat. The objective of this reference is to introduce U.S. students to contemporary foodstuffs, ways of eating, and typical cookery in almost every country of the world, and this objective is met....While this is most suited to the study and preparation of food, it would be of interest to reports on other countries for a world geography assignment and even to confirm the menus found in contemporary literature. This is a must purchase.öûGALE Reference for Students
ôIn this informative set of cookbooks, Jacob and Ashkenazi travel the globe through the world of food, stopping in every nation-state and even a few nationalities. Basic geographical information, the types of food eaten, typical dishes of the area, and styles of eating are provided for each country....The scope of coverage in this five-volume set is amazing--even the smallest of countries like Dijibouti or Tyrol, which is not even an independent country yet, are represented. With such a vast amount of information provided, good organization is necessary, and here the set excels....Readers can search by topic, country, ingredient, or recipe, and they are directed to the volume and page number where the information can be found.öûVOYA

Product Description
The student body in the United States is ever more diverse, and librarians have a major new resource to help them with the frequent requests from students who have assignments that include finding ethnic recipes. This 5-volume cookbook set is directly related to the middle school and high school multicultural curricula. It will be the source to turn to for multicultural, immigration, and foreign language units. The World Cookbook for Students fills a demand for more and different recipes for most countries and many ethnic groups. Many librarians still cling to an old Time-Life set, and this new set aims to replace that. Although there are many cookbooks out there and many recipes are available on the Internet, not all are geared to students, and no in-print sets or series match this depth. The volumes are organized alphabetically by country or group name. Each entry includes a brief introduction to the land and people and their cuisine and then an overview of the foodstuffs, typical dishes, and styles of eating in simple bulleted lists. Approximately 5 recipes are provided per country/ethnic group of typical dishes and holiday fare, for a total of 1,198. Each recipe is introduced and contextualized. Other elements include boxed material to highlight such things as a regional staple, thumbnail maps and illustrations, an introduction to the set, a bibliography with print and online resources, and a set index in each volume.

Description
This 12th Edition of Sir Patrick Moore?s classic book has been completely revised in the light of changes in technology. Not only do these changes include commercially available astronomical telescopes and software, but also what we know and understand about the universe. There are many new photographs and illustrations. Writing in the easy-going style that made him famous as a writer and broadcaster, Sir Patrick introduced astronomy and amateur observing together, so that his reader gets an idea of what he is observing at the same time as how to observe. Almost half the book is Appendices. These are hugely comprehensive and provide hints and tips, as well as data for pretty well every aspect of amateur astronomy. This is probably the only book in which all this information is collected in one place.
